at Jodo Mission of Hawaii

Please come to our Sunday Services on November 1 and 22, 2015
at 10 a.m. to hear lectures on the New Otsutome Book. As stated in the
“Foreword” to the New Otsutome Book, the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions
(HCJM) in commemoration of the 800th Grand Memorial of
our founder Honen Shonin, decided to publish a revised ver-
sion of the Otsutome book which contained English translations of the
sutras by the late Bishop Dwight Ryokan Nakamura. The HCJM min-
isters organized a committee to revise the Otsutome book with Rev.
Shinri Hara as the editor-in-chief.
Unlike the previous Otsutome book, which separated the English
and Japanese sections, the two languages have been brought together
to make it easier for both those who are familiar with Japanese and
those who are not to read aloud and understand the passages of the
sutra. The new format consists of Japanese reading, Chinese charac-
ters, English pronunciation and English transla-
tion line by line in the hopes that everyone who
reads it will come to have a greater appreciation and deeper understand-
ing for Honen Shonin’s teachings as well as Buddhism in general.

2. Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions Convention
[also known as Kyoku Convention]
On September 18, 19 and 20, 2015, the Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions held its
40th Biennial Convention at the Betsuin. Ministers and delegates were from all 13 tem-
ples here in Hawaii. Leonard Chow of Hilo Meishoin was re-elected as President of the
Hawaii Council of Jodo Missions. Below is a photo of the installation of officers who
were installed by Bishop Gensho Hara. First Vice President is Robert Miyake (Hilo

3. B A Z A A R
THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO CAME TO THE BAZAAR on Sunday, October
18, 2015. The Bazaar doors opened at 8:00 a.m. but for some reason, some people like coming
early and the earliest person stood in line at 5:15 a.m. The weather was great on the day of the
bazaar as it rained the night before.
THANK YOU for coming and hope you found some wonderful things! For all those who
came to help, we cannot thank you enough. Also THANK YOU to all who came to help on
Sunday, October 11, 2015 for Bazaar preparation and taking all the stored things out. THANK
YOU TO the members, family and friends who came all week from October 11 to October 17
to sort and price items. THANK YOU so much for your time! There were people who left
things to be sold just outside the closed social hall doors for the Bazaar.!

4. H i r o s h i ma K e n j i n ka i
On October 3, 2015, the Hiroshima Kenjinkai came to Jodo Mission of Hawaii to
practice their Hiroshima yaki which is like an okonomiyaki (a savory delicious pancake
dish containing a variety of ingredients). The Hiroshima Kenjinkai will be making their
delicious Hiroshima yaki at the Ohana Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center in January
2016. Their group come to the Betsuin each year to practice. Years ago, this group
donated the sink in our garage area as well as the metal table in the garage area which we
use for our large gas pots for sushi making and during our Bon Dance. Below see photos

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and is
called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of death
occurs for a person listed on this record, the minis-
ters pray for that individual during the morning ser-
vice. The prayers will continue each year for as long
as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your
own name on the list, too. This also helps when it is
difficult to have memorial services. We also welcome
you to attend the morning service at 8:30 am.
How to apply: Stop by the office, and fill out the
application form. Each name costs $200. After the
application is accepted, the name will be listed on the
record.
