1. How television research’s audiences.
Showing how BARB research’s
television ratings through audience’s.
2. What is BARB?- how does it collect
data?
• BARB= Broadcasters Audience Research Board
• It collects data by selecting 5,000 homes from different
backgrounds, classes, ages, genders, and sexual orientation.
• They use data from the sensus to select the 5,000 homes.
• They are monitored by a box they put into the people’s homes
and monitors what they watch also the residents have to
register every time they walk into the room when they put
the television on.
3. Why is BARB useful to TV production
companies and schedulers?
• It helps TV companies and advertisers to see
what share of audiences they watch.
• What shows are popular and there’s a point
for the programme’s to be on television and
people that actually watches.
• It also helps advertisers to advertise on what
shows so they audiences will see their product
and will get customers by advertising.
4. Top 30 shows for last week
The top 2 shows that were
most popular were Eastenders
and Happy Valley hey had
around 8 to 7 million views. I
think the reason why these
two were most popular
because soap operas are for
everyone and mostly for
family’s can watch and it
doesn’t really have a target
audience like a cooking show
or a history show will have.
5. Going back to 1998
There’s more TV shows and
programmes now today then there was
10 years ago and even there’s catch up
TV and available on the internet such as
BBC iplayer so Eastenders can be a
watched on other things not only on
BBC1 so the views has gone down from
Now there’s more leisure’s for kids such as swimming
and youth clubs so shows are being less viewed as
people are not at home watching television .
Today audience’s are more fragmented as there’s more
choice’s of channels such reality, discovery, history and
cooking channels that has a specific target audience.
