How did you
attract/address your
audience?
Variety of different
shots
In the opening we used a variety of different shots showing the protagonist do
a variety of different activities. This helps keep the audience interested as it
shows them a range of exercises which the protagonist is doing. The
audience members may feel to workout themselves as seeing the protagonist
doing it puts them in his shoes, making them feel motivated to workout. This is
one thing which me and my group learnt from our audience feedback. Each
shot shows a different perspective, the close ups of the protagonists face
show the hard work that he’s putting in and the dedication. Mid shots of him
training outside are used to establish to the audience where the protagonist is
(outdoor gym). The shot of the spotlight foreshadows that the protagonist will
be under the spotlight later on in the film and that the hard work will pay. The
shot showing the tape being wrapped around the hand of the protagonist is
used to address the audience that he is a boxer, this is really important as
props play a major role in addressing the audience.
The editing
The editing played a key role in attracting the
interest of the audience. The use of fades, cuts,
match on actions etc all played a part in our final
product. The variety of editing techniques used in
our opening was essential, the speed of editing
changes through the course of the opening a the
beginning it starts off slow but gradually gets faster
this is beneficial as everything is not just one
pace, making the viewers want to watch on and
this also prevents boredom kicking in. Slowing
down the clip of the protagonist in a spotlight
showing him shadow boxing was a very useful
editing technique as it gave time to bring in titles
which is important as this shows to the audience
Music
The music is used to attract and appeal to our
target audience as it is pleasing to the ear.
Also because the non-digetic music matches
what is being seen, this is crucial because if it
was not to match the narrative then people
would lose interest rather quickly. The music
also signifies to the audience the nature of
hard work taking place and is a motivational
element to our opening. Furthermore the
music used is a well known instrumental
used by a rap artist, most people who listen
to rap are of the ages of 13-29, this could
also have attracted our audience.
Props
Props play a major role in addressing the
audience. For example the shot showing
the protagonist getting tape wrapped
around his hand is a key element of the
opening signifying to the audience that
he is indeed a boxer. Small things such
as a towel being wrapped around the
trainers neck suggests to the audience
that he is in fact the trainer. These are
all important for mise en scene and for
the audience to identify him as a boxer.
