The female and male audience in this generation
like mostly the same things and are interested in
the same things. They go with fashion and
everything they see celebrity do, they think they
should do this aswell. With the social networking
such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram
they are able to socialise with their peers and
make new friends. They also like the same style of
music such as Rap and R’n’B, rappers such as Lil
Wayne and Meek Mills the male audience almost
look at them like role models.
In movies, in the modern days they almost like the
same movies however, there is always a divide
because most males like action movies. The
audience that is for my media product is the same
age range in male and females. The males are
between the age range of 15-20 and the female
audience is between 15-25. I think female
audience may relate to it more because of how
women are in society these days and how they
can also be the villains in movies aswell as males.
The targeted audience is attracted and addressed by using the same age range
characters for the opening so the audience can relate and maybe see themselves in one
of the characters which may appeal and engage them more so they continue to watch
the rest of the opening. The targeted audience for my media product are youths in
society that mainly like same stuff so they can relate to the opening more. Using props
such as fashionable digital devices e.g. Samsung Galaxy S3 enables the audience to
relate to characters because they may have the same device as them. The age range is
15-25 is based on how they live their life and because Retribution has all different races
so that the audience is wide ranged so that they can relate to the characters .
Positive
-Blood/props looks realistic
-Storyline/plot was genuine and good
-Acting was acceptable.
Negative
-Audio could be put in better
-Could use better camera for better quality of the
footage
-some of the actors could be in their roles/ characters
more
The targeted male audience is
very based on their age range
and what they like doing. This
reflects in how they see the
opening and how they
interoperate it themselves in
their heads. This male
audience watched the opening
and acknowledged the positive
and negative aspects to for
Retribution. The negative
points can be that has been
acknowledged are issues that
can be resolved purely on how
we record the shots and how
we edit and put it non-diagetic
sound in the footage to
compliment and not criticise
the footage at the end of
putting everything together.
AGED: 18
Positive
-Mystery/cliff hanger at the end
-Enigma codes triggered at the right scenes
-Locations fit and complimented the storyline
Negative
-Actors could have been better and engage with
their roles more
-‘Boss’ could’ve acted more dramatic and more
serious to make it look more realistic
-Hit men could’ve acted more serious and scarier to
create more of an effect for us as the audience.
The feedback from the male and
the female shows that the
female and male audience see
and take in the opening in
different ways. Some similar
such as the negative feedback
about the actors being in their
role more so that it looks
genuine and looks more realistic
on screen. This conveys that the
characters are perceived the
way we wanted it to be however
we was thinking too much of
that than making it look more
realistic in the shots. The
positive feedback enables to
give my group praise in what we
done well and engage with the
right audience.

“…A riveting opening with relatable dialogue however, could
have incorporated better thought out shots to make the
opening more interactive, engaging the target audience more.
Altogether a terrific thriller opening.”
RATING: 7/10
“…One thing I love about this piece is that the themes of the
film are so strong and shine through and there isn’t little
errors like continuity errors to mess up the professionalism.
However, one thing that I didn’t like was the fact that the
camera work was a tiny bit shaky near the start of the start.”
RATING: 8.5/10
“… The piece generally blended together well… The shot
transitions were smooth and each characters role couldn’t
have been acted any better. If I had to mention anything that
could’ve been made it more effective, it would probably be the
fight scene could’ve been made look more realistic, there was
no exposing close up shots so it seemed like it was easier to
record.”
RATING: 8.5-9/10
These quotes from the
targeted audience gave us
feedback on how we can
improve our opening if we
could. It enables us as a
group to know that we
succeed to grab a specific
audience which was done
so because of how we got
the characters to engage
with the targeted audience
more that anyone else.
These quotes gives us some
problems that can be seen
in the opening however, can
be resolved by the way we
record our shots to make
sure they look realistic and
more of an effect on the
audience whilst watching
the opening.
The main characters are shown automatically
when the opening starts. The theme of the
opening is based on revenge which may relate to
the target audience maybe because they want to
seek revenge on someone or something. The
conventions such as iconography is shown very
specific in these shots because it shows the
audience what he’s wearing which fits into his
role he’s acting in. This attracts the audience
because they have specific roles to be acting
upon and the audience may relate to the
storyline and what might occur during the
opening whilst they are watching it.
The actors look young almost around the age
range the opening is targeted towards. This may
make the targeted audience see themselves
more in the different characters because of the
same age range the characters and the audience
are both in.
The targeted audience are given different shots such as
long shots, medium shots and close ups to show the
importance or what the characters are saying and the
dialogue of the each characters in the opening.
The shots of the boss show the facial expressions of the
character and shows the importance of what he’s
saying and the vital instructions he’s giving out to his
little servants. The close up of his lips shows the
significance of what he’s about to say and may give an
impression to the audience that if the instructions
aren’t followed then everyone will be punished for it.
This attracts the right audience because when using
the same age range of characters they can relate more
to them than other characters because they may share
the same interest and hobbies in the real world. This is
how we tried engaging the audience with the opening
by using the same age range actors so they may see
some parts of them in the characters being played in
Retribution.
The music had to compliment the footage fit in with the opening and the mood it has to
create when watching Retribution. The music was put in at the end of ending the shots to
make the final piece complete. The music had to by copyright free so we are able to use it
freely with no hesitations. The music would appeal and attract the targeted audience
because the music edges on the tension and puts the audience on the edge of their seats
making them want to know more and what will happen at the end of the opening which
was successful to do. My group and I tried to engage and interact with the audience with
the soundtrack by using 2 different soundtracks changing the mood in the opening to
make the audience intrigue in what was going to happen next in the opening. For
example, from 0.38 seconds to 0.44seconds the sound track gets a bit louder when Tony
gets up suggesting to the audience that he’s a target and something bad might happen to
him which makes we tried engaging the audience when choosing the soundtrack making
it attractive for the targeted audience.
Some shots for Retribution are similar to other films. For example, the torturing
scene looks almost like the torture scene in Taken. We done this subconsciously
which shows the audience that the storyline and the shot types were well
planned and well thought out before recording any of the footage. This attracts
the audience because they would know that we tried to do this to the best of our
ability and tried engaging the audience in the opening whilst recording the shots
and how we portray every character to be in Retribution.
The shots show a very common stereotype of the black community. They are perceived as
violent and aggressive and the clothing of the characters make them fit into the
stereotype even more. This may relate to some of the targeted audience because they
may be in this type of stereotype and may see themselves in these characters in
Retribution. The way they are hiding their face and hiding their identity shows that they
don’t want to be recognised by the audience or maybe hiding themselves because of what
might occur in the opening. This may attract the audience by making them want to know
what might happen at the end of the opening. The shot reminded me of the movie ‘Attack
the Block’ because they are almost the same age range of the characters in Retribution
and the stereotype is well lived up to for the black people and how the society sees them.
