2. INTRODUCTION
• Harvey Goldstein is based in Singapore where he leads venture capital and
consulting firm Harvest International as chairman. With a special focus on
Indonesia, Harvey Goldstein was recognized for his work building trade and
investment in Indonesia and received a distinguished alumnus award from
the Polytechnic Alumni Association at New York University’s Tandon School
of Engineering.
Tandon is one of the oldest private schools in New York that focuses on
technology and engineering. The school rewards students and alumni who
show excellence in innovation, invention, and entrepreneurship.
This July, the school announced details about its extensive programming
intended to encourage people from diverse backgrounds to enter into
science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. STEM-related
employment has grown by 79 percent since 1990, while cyber security is
projected to open up 3.5 million new jobs by 2021. Artificial intelligence is
another growth industry, where 2.3 million jobs may need filling in the
coming years
3. ENGINEERING
• Women, people of color, and people in lower income brackets,
however, tend to be underrepresented in STEM industries.
Tandon’s STEMNOW summer programming focuses on
workshops like Girls Who Code that focus on bringing young
women into STEM fields. Applied Research Innovations in Science
and Engineering, or ARISE, is a program that brings high-quality
STEM education to high schoolers with lower incomes, those with
little access to this type of education, and students of color.
These students are taught by Tandon graduate students and
faculty, and often get the opportunity to return to Tandon labs
for employment after the summer session is over.
Tandon’s outreach is having a measurable effect. Sixty-five
percent of the students enrolled in the 2018 STEMNOW
programs are young women, a higher number than ever before.
The school itself also has a higher proportion of women enrolled
than any other engineering school in the US, with 42 percent of
its student base being female.
