This document discusses the design and purpose of television channel idents. It notes that idents can have different tempos, from slow like the BBC 1 hippo ident to faster like the E4 ident. The length of idents can vary, like the Simpsons ident for Channel 4 being 39 seconds. Idents provide both information, such as announcing the next show, and entertainment. They can also interact with viewers and convey different densities of information. The main purpose of idents is branding, making the channel easily recognizable through colors and logos. Idents are important for packaging, segmentation within scheduling, marketing, establishing identity, and fitting into the scheduling of shows.
