2. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE GREEN
SCREEN
To edit my green screen with my chosen background I chose
to use adobe photoshop cs6. The reason for this edit is to
create a poster for the web series Obsession. The poster will
have to communicate the genre and theme of the web
series so that it will fully translate to the audience.
3. EDITING STAGES
Using the wand tool I then began to remove the green
screen away from the subject. The wand tool works by
depicting and selecting similar shades and colours, which
can then be deleted/ removed. The more variation in the
shades due to shadow etc. the higher the tolerance level
would be set so that a larger area could be selected.
To begin the editing process I started by
duplicating the original green screen layer. This
was done so that there would be an untarnished
and unedited layer that would remain
untouched and could be referred to later if
needed.
4. EDITING STAGES
Then by using the eraser tool I was able
to remove any pixels that were not
selected by the wand tool. It also
enabled me to refine the edges
around the subject. The reason for the
subject in darkness help to empower
the horror genre and it supports the
unknown factor. Also through the trailer
for Obsession the face of John Doe is
never featured. This is done so that it
makes the audience question the
character and also builds the tension.
Next I created a new file. I modified the width and height of this
file so that I could acquire the appropriate size for the poster.
5. EDITING STAGES
By using the fill tool and selecting the colour
black I was able to change the colour of the
new file so that it had a black background. I
decided to use black as it is a colour which is
usually associated with the horror genre. I also
believe that it will set the scene for both the
poster and therefore the web series. It will give
the audience no misconception about what
the web series obsession is about.
Next I used the text tool so as to start introducing the
tagline. I first began this by choosing an appropriate
text which would communicate the genre. I also
made the decision to keep the text in capitals. This
was done so that it would make a final statement.
6. EDITING STAGES
I then continued to add the text into the new file. I used a
new text layer for each line of script. I also reduced the
size of every other line so that certain parts were
emphasised more than others. I made sure the
arrangement of the text was uneven and chaotic. This
was done so that it would challenge the norm and
create a composition that would appear abstract.
7. EDITING STAGES
This is what the arrangement of the tagline will look like
on the poster.
Next I went
onto the
layer filters
and choose
the effect of
dissolve. I
added this
effect to
each of the
text layers. I
decided to
use this
effect as it
added a
textured
finish to the
text which
produced a
scratched
and grain
effect. I felt
that this
helped to
emphasis the
genre and
produce a
statement.
8. EDITING STAGES
Then I
decided to
duplicate
each text
layer so that I
could further
edit the layer
without
effect what
had already
been done.
By right
clicking on
the newly
duplicating
layers I then
click on
rasterize
type. I did
this so that I
could use
the filter
gallery.
This is what the duplicated
layer icon look like after I had
used rasterize type.
9. EDITING STAGES
I then chose the filter option of reticulation. The focus upon the text – typography for this poster is
extremely important as it tells the audience what it is is about. It gives away the genre and sets the
scene. Therefore I chose to add this particular filter as I felt it would help to fully communicate the tension
and scary elements which are present in the web series Obsession.
10. EDITING STAGES
As the filter which had just been used was place on the duplicated layer, the
previous editing which has been done to the original text was no longer visible.
So as a result I changed the opacity of the duplicated layer so that both effects
from the layers were visible and worked together in producing the typography. I
felt that both these effects worked well and therefore created a typography
which fully communicated the narrative and genre of the web series Obsession.
11. EDITING STAGES
Next I inserted the subject layer
(green screen) which I had
previously edited. I arranged
the layer so that it was slightly
off centre, therefore continuing
to test the idealistic and
beautifully composed scene. I
decided to do this so it would
get a reaction from the
audience – make the poster
appear abstract.
Then I created a new layer. I ensured that this layer
was behind all others. I did this so that I could use the
eraser tool and erase through the background layer.
This was done so as to create a spot light which
would illuminated the main focal point of the poster.
However I did ensure that the harshness of the eraser
tool was low so that it was a gradually fade and not
a harsh contrast. Also the opacity of this tool was set
slightly low so that the transition between layers was
gradually and merged well together.
12. EDITING STAGES
I then inserted another layer which was off the mood board - victim board which was used in the trailer. I decided to
use this as it is an iconic part of the trailer for Obsession and help to set the scene for what type of narrative the
audience show expect to see. I then used the black and white editing tool to change the colour of the victim board so
that it fits with the rest of the scene. By using this tool I was able to adapt the colour level input o that I gained the
correct balance for what I wanted. I wanted the faces of his victim to be in white and grey so as to emphasise their
innocence whereas the rest of the board I wanted to be in black so that it framed the focal point of this element.
13. EDITING STAGES
Finally I inserted the image of the typography which had previously been chosen by the target market during a survey.
So that the synergy was the same throughout this poster I used the same process for the text as I did for the tagline.
However I did also modify the colour of the title so that it stood out. I chose to use red and it is another colour which is
associated to horror due to it being the colour of blood. Lastly I used the paint brush tool. However I did adjust the brush
type so that it produced a gritty appearance rather than a smooth one. I then added this to cover parts of the text for
the tagline This was done to help set the scene and produce a spooky atmosphere.
