The Skeletal
System
How many bones do you have?
• A baby has between
300-350 bones.
• Some bones fuse
together, so an adult has
about 206 bones.
Largest and smallest bones
femur stapes
What do your bones do?
Support. They support your
body.
Protection. Bones protect
internal organs.
Movement. Bones enable body
movements.
Mineral storage.
Blood cell production. Bones
make blood cells in marrow.
Energy storage. Some fats are
stored in bones.
Joints are the places where your bones
meet.
We need to take care
of our joints or we will
get arthritis or other
problems.
cartilage
It connects bones.
It is softer than bone.
It acts like a cushion.
Your ears are made of
cartilage.
Arthritis
ภาวะข้อต่ออักเสบ
To prevent arthritis, we should control our weight,
exercise, eat fish, prevent injury and protect our joints
by being careful when lifting heavy things.
ligaments
Ligaments
connect bone
to bone.
Bone marrow
Bone marrow makes red blood cells.
Yellow
marrow is
mostly fat.
Red
marrow
makes
blood.
We can eat bone marrow.
fracture
A fracture is a broken
bone.
It is very painful.
If you fracture a bone,
you will probably get a
fever.
Have you ever broken a bone?
I broke my
collarbone when I
was 13 years old.
An x-ray can see broken
bones.
spine
The spine is made
of bones called
vertebrae.
Your spinal cord is
in your spine.
skull
Your skull protects
your brain.
ribs
Your ribs protect your
organs.
Bones need calcium
We should eat
healthy food with
calcium, or our
bones may
become weak.
The Skeleton Dance
scoliosis
Scoliosis is when the
spine is crooked.
Syphilis destroys your bones
Syphilis is a sexually
transmitted disease.
Joseph Merrick-
The elephant man
He lived in the 19th
century.
People paid money to
see him.
Sometimes bones become fossils
Archaeologists study fossils to learn about our
past.
Questions
• What bone protects our brain?
• What bones protect our organs?
• What nutrient do our bones need to be strong?
• About how many bones are there in an adult’s body?
• What is it called when we break a bone?
• What is inside our bones that makes red blood cells?
• What connects bones to other bones?
• What health problem do we have when our cartilage
wears away?
• What are the places where our bones meet?
