Human strength and human weakness
1. Human Strength and Human Weakness
Haley Johnston
Ambition
The desire to become powerful or famous
“When ambition ends, happiness begins.”
-Thomas Merton, American Writer
“Basically you have to suppress your own ambitions in
order to be who you need to be.”
-Bob Dylan, Folk Singer
Symbolism: The black dress represents the negative side of
ambition. Nicole being in a tree shows how you have to climb
over and use people sometimes to achieve your ambitions. The
black flower shows that ambition can be a negative thing.
Duty
The obligation to do something morally right
“Duty is the most sublime word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot
do more. You should never wish to do less.”
-Robert E. Lee
“It is humankind's duty to respect all life, not only animals have feelings but even also
trees and plants”
-Michele de Montaigne, French Philosopher
Symbolism: The white dress represents the fact that duty is a good thing. The fact that Nicole is
walking into a church shows a type of duty, to go to church when you should. The white flower
on the Bible itself is also another example of duty, to read it.
2. Vice
A habit that is morally wrong
“Vice knows she's ugly, so puts on her mask”
-Benjamin Franklin, American Statesman
“Vices are their own punishment”
-Aesop, Ancient Greek Fabulist
Symbolism: The black dress shows us that vice is a dark and
dire characteristic. The bottles of alcohol are an example of a
vice. The black flower near her also shows us that vice is just a
terrible thing.
Virtue
To be guided by a moral path
“Beauty without virtue is like a rose without scent.”
-Author Unknown
“Virtue is persecuted more by the wicked than it is loved by the good.”
-Buddha, Religious Leader
Symbolism: Nicole’s white dress shows us that virtue is a good characteristic to have. Her being
by the Church sign and reading the Bible shows us that she is being guided by both of these
aspects. The white flower shows us again that virtue is a good thing.
