 Triveni Food’s lentils banned
The Assam government has banned the storage, distribution and sale of lentil (masur dal) manufactured
and packed by R S Triveni Foods Private Limited, Delhi, for a period of six months. Food analysts found
the masur dal samples coated with an oily substance, which was declared unsafe according to the Food
Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It is believed to have a poisonous effect on human health when
consumed. The state government has asked food safety officers to immediately enforce the prohibition.
 Assam Government lifts ban on Wai Wai
The Government of Assam has withdrawn the prohibition notification on Wai Wai noodles and declared
the product safe for human consumption. The decision was declared after the company adopted steps to
improve the standard of their product. A ban was imposed on June 15 on the manufacture, storage,
distribution and sale of Wai Wai ready-to-eat noodles and Wai Wai 1-2-3 mini noodles, due to unsafe
levels of Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG).
 Instant coffee makers import raw coffee
Instant coffee exporters in India are relying on imported raw coffee due to a global fall in coffee prices
and comparatively high raw coffee prices in the country. The total coffee exports from India till
September 15 this year, showed a marginal year-on-year increase to 236,779 tonnes, while instant coffee
re-exports jumped by 22 percent to 46,127 tonnes. Indian green coffee prices of both varieties – Robusta
and Arabica - are nearly 10 percent higher than global prices. Instant coffee exporters are increasingly
choosing to import raw coffee for this reason.
 FSSAI proposes regulation for nutraceuticals, ayurvedic products
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has come out with a gazette regulation to check
labeling of 'health supplements' and proposed the ban of the sale of such products as 'medicines'.
Regulations have also been framed for products based on Ayurveda, unani, sidhha and other traditional
health systems. The proposed regulation has fixed the permissible limits of ingredients in the products
and every food or health supplement package will carry the information on the label with the 'NOT FOR
MEDICINAL USE' use. Further, the authorities, under the regulation, cannot claim their product to have
therapeutic or curative use.

 Europe to buy more Darjeeling tea
Export of Darjeeling tea to European countries has increased this year, which may help the producers in
the Himalayan foothills to cope with increasing production cost to some extent. This is an indication that
they are gearing up to sell 100 percent Darjeeling tea from 2016. The product is under Protected
Geographical Indication (PGI) and curbs the selling of blended teas under the Darjeeling tag. The product
is the first commodity from India to get PGI status. Darjeeling tea exports are expected to stand at 4
million kg in 2015, which is 30,000-40,000 kg higher compared to 2014. Even with increased exports to
the EU, the price has not gone up in tandem with the rising production cost.

 Shree Renuka Sugars to merge with its UAE-based arm
Shree Renuka Sugars, India's largest sugar refiner, announced plans to merge with its UAE-based
subsidiary Renuka Commodities DMCC. Renuka DMCC is mainly involved into the trading of raw sugar,
white sugar and ethanol. The amalgamation is taking place with a view to optimize the synergies of both
the companies and thereby improve their balance sheet. However, the merging will not change
company’s shareholding pattern.
