Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy
Democracy in its most basic form is a type of governing system ruled by the citizens of a particular society. The first form of democracy can be found
in ancient Greece, and the modern form of Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the idea of rule by the
people. Although, for most of history democracy was not viewed in a positive light. According to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared
democracy because they thought the masses would not act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite classes (2015). It was not
until relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading form of governing around the world. This essay will focus on the different
manifestations of democracy and how they function. The core of democracy is that the people in a society should have a say in governing and
decision making; however in order to be considered a democracy a country must follow other democratic principles. This essay will argue that in
many cases practical application of democracy does not always allow the people to have their view adequately translated into government and policy,
due to the limitations of their political system. The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in government, or voting on
decisions and policy decided by those officials. This does not allow for everyone and their views represented in government. This essay will also argue
that some democratic systems

Is United States of America a Democratic country?
Democracy has been defined as a government structure which people are involved in decision making about it either directly or through by the
representatives whom they have chosen by open vote. In a perfect sensing world ideal of perfect democracy could be described as all citizens are well
informed in every topics of issues occurring around them such as human abuse, employment issue, foreign politics, and economy. Everyone can voice
their opinion strongly on the issues and not disregard them because it is not a personal problem to them. Media and politicians would work together to

All of this is can shed a little light on how the political system in the U.S is bit mingled.
In conclusion, reaching to an absolute verdict of what system U.S really has and whether if it is truly a country that pride itself on democracy or not,
seem to be slightly complicated. U.S is truly a great nation with huge population, with that said every opinion of every citizen can differ. Even with all
those research and official studies of definition of the system, it will meet with great deal of criticism since all people cannot reach the same decision.

Democracy By John Dewey : Democracy
Democracy to me always had a propagandist vibe to it. In pop culture and movies, every instance the subject of democracy arises, it is also
accompanied by some US plot to overthrow some South American communist regime. I identified democracy as a political form, a political tool, and
my most preferred system of government. The American philosopher John Dewey, however, looks past the veil thatdemocracy's political and economic
purposes produce and examines democracy instead as a way of life. Dewey identifies democracy as a truly human way of living, because it demands
the participation of all the human beings that reside within its form to contribute to the values the system would provide for. Voting is the mechanism
that allows the participants of a democracy to contribute and maintain those values, and honor the foundations that allow democracy to survive as the
best form of living. To introduce, to Dewey, the common perception of democracy is hardly fitting of its true definition. Dewey expands our
common idea of democracy into a "way of living", but in the general political and governmental sense dictates it as, "the best means so far found, for
realizing ends that lie in the wide domain of human relationships and the development of human personality. (1110)" Dewey understands democracy to
be a social way to act as an individual. Democracy enforces and idolizes the capabilities of the individual to capitalize on the contributions those
capabilities can provide for

Democracy And The Benefits Of Democracy
The world is changing, and right now there is a great amount of tension between many of the countries. So how do we solve all of this tension? A
democratic government protects the rights of its citizens creating a society where everyone works together to improve the country economically,
politically and socially. Before one can begin to discuss the merits of democracy, one must first answer the question what is democracy? In his essay on
democracy, Robert Dahl explains how democracy cannot exist without protecting the rights of its citizens. Democracy is more than a system of
government, it is also a "system of rights" because rights are "the essential building blocks" of a democratic government (Dahl 100). Democracy
builds off of the idea of human rights to create a system of government shaped around a collection of powers which belong to every citizen. Because
rights provide the foundation for the democratic system, it cannot be practiced without providing a guarantee of personal rights. Cornel West
illustrates how democracy is more than just a type of government, it is a way of life which benefits its citizens. Democracy is a "cultural way of
being" which causes people to become "empowered and enlightened" (West 115–16). Democracy changes the way that its citizens think, in democratic
societies the culture is based largely around how democracy is beneficial. The cultural influence of democracy causes a change in its citizens– they
develop into more sophisticated

Democracy And Its Impact On Democracy
How are they related to democracy, concepts discuss the procedures that make democracy possible. Democracy related to our lives by looking for the
right thing to do, for every one of us have equality and freedom of speech, we could have multiple ideas it might change the ideology of the country,
we also could related the democracy by looking at the facts. The facts are Free Elections, Political Participation, Civil Liberties, and Functioning
Government. The democracy is one of the most common types of the government in the modern world. Which give us clear idea of who defied
the democracy even in different countries. Moreover free elections could related to democracy by having free election that anyone could share his
experience with the others and create an idea to fix any problem. Also this could direct a message to the citizen to know what the elections doing.
Political participation, to each one who is adults and have some awareness of the social issues or votes. By participation we could have more
diversity and through that diversity we could develop our economy and our awareness of different cultures. Civil Liberties, the essential of democracy
and also important for the UN legally guarantees to all of the people. Civil liberties will include freedom of speech, because individuals allowed to
communicate for their own different view in a debates from each others. Functioning Government, to establish a law that individual could respect and

Democracy And Its Lack Of Democracy
Throughout Plato's Republic in Book VIII, readers are caught up in the conversation about four unjust structures that each structure will succeed the
other as society decays. The four unjust structures are explained throughout dialogue and described as timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and tyranny.
Most shocking critique throughout the discussion is about democracy and its ineffectiveness to rule. Plato's disagreement of democracy does not
involve of what we are acquainted with today, but rather the idea of democracy. Plato explores the central strain of thegovernment that is acknowledged
with liberty and fairness. Also, this form of government known for its embracement of freedom and equality. Plato's description and disagreement
about democracy is correct because the consequences of such government is that it leads the population to pursue unnecessary desires.
Democracy is the type of government where the rule comes from people. Democracy, as we know it today, gives power to the many and in turn give
most importance to the idea of obtaining freedom. Freedom empowers people to pursue their desires and obtain every opportunity they can acquire.
People in this government have unlimited mobility and have free speech to their ideas and beliefs. However, Plato's argument is that this freedom will
the downfall for this type of government and how people are fueled with their intent to obtain their desire. The enjoyment of free speech can backfire
as every citizen is entitled to

Democracy: Tyranny, Oligarchy And Democracy
Intro
When we hear the words Tyranny, Oligarchy or Democracy where does your thoughts go? Do picture Greece, Canada, or maybe China? Do we think of
the past or present? No answer is wrong, when we think of political structures, there are numerous examples. Politics are one of the main structures that
arise continuously throughout known history. "Historians who study ancient civilizations have the daunting task of following the path of societies and
cultures on the basis of scant sources. Actually, as past civilizations goancient Greece has left us a comparatively rich record." The roots of ancient
Greek political structures, run far and wide, over the years the Greeks experimented with many different forms of political structures such as tyranny, ...

Which in hind sight is very similar to the motives of a tyrant. Oligarchies could be considered the most typical form of city–state government within
Greece. Oligarchies tended to be a fall out due to failed transitions to a democratic government. "The oligarchy of the 400" came into power in 411 BCE
in Athens, this oligarchy removed power from the citizens of Athens. Another example of an oligarchy is "In 404 BCE, following the defeat of the
Athenian military forces in Sicily, there was an oligarchy of 'the Thirty Tyrants' in Athens which was a particularly brutal regime, noted for its summary
executions." According to the author of the Athenian Constitution "reframed from harming none of the citizens, but put to death those who were
outstanding with respect to wealth or birth or reputation, wishing to free themselves from that source of danger– and also wanting to plunder their
estates; and by the end of a short interval of time they had done away with no less than fifteen hundred" (Ath. Pol.

Democracy: Direct Democracy
We are going to take an in–depth look at how direct democracy works in Florida, and in particular what it means for initiatives, referendums, and
recalls. We will then look at some of the state's important laws that were enacted through the initiative process as well as some of the problems with
the system as it stands today. The state passed a 'Florida Supermajority Requirement Amendment' or better known as 'Amendment 3' in November of
2006 requiring that all constitutional amendments went from a majority (50% = 1) to a supermajority (60%) vote requirement for passage. Ironically
this amendment was approved by a 57.8% vote. The effect that has had and will continue to have on Florida's politics will be looked at as well,

It is a fairly easy process to understand, but not as easy to qualify for the ballot. You must register with the state as a political party, and then prove via
the number of signatures, 8% of the total number of statewide votes cast in the previous Presidential election, from 13 of the 25 Congressional
districts. The Supervisor of Elections has to verify the signatures, and send it to the State Supreme Court for legality issues. If approved, you then have
to get more signatures, to qualify for the next general election ballot. (League of Women Voters) Theinitiative is then put on the next general election
ballot for the general public to vote yes or no on it. Sixty percent must approve the initiative to make it through to being an Amendment to the
Constitution. The legislature still has the responsibility to implement the new Amendment which can take time, or be held up if the legislators have
their own political agenda that might vary from the will of the people. They can delay or ignore an approved initiative for quite some time if they so
desire. The problem with this system is that only initiatives that are well funded by special interest groups have any real chance of being put onto the
ballot. With the passage of Amendment 3, the supermajority (60%),

Democracy Is Better Than A Democracy
Being part of a democracy means that the majority will prevail over the minority with no written constitution or rules to keep the minority from being
over powered. Where as a republic has a written constitution for rules that are used to keep the majority from overpowering the minority. Just defining
these two words one can say being apart of a republic seems more fair than a democracy, since there are rules that everyone must follow to keep
everything fair and just. In this day in age it just seems that the rules are pushed aside and either party that is in charge can just do as they please. If
our way of life were actually followed by the constitution I am all for being a republic. But we all know that it isn't something that is followed all the
time no matter what. So let's find out which one is better than the two a democracy or a republic. So we know from above that a democracy is run
by the majority, that means if the majority likes it then it will be followed by all. If the majority does not agree with it then it will be taken away
just as easily as it was given. In a democracy all people are allowed to take a vote on laws that will govern them. It is like asking your family if they
want fish or chicken for dinner and of course the majority vote wins and that is what everyone will eat for dinner. Anyone that is a minority does not
have the power to practice their religion of choice, dress, way of living or many other things that make a person who they are if the

The Jeffersonian Democracy: The Jeffersonian Democracy
The Jeffersonian democracy was named after Thomas Jefferson from 1790's to the 1820's. It was used to refer to the Republican Party. Jefferson
founded the opposition to the Federalist Party of Alexander Hamilton. Democratic–Republicans brought politics to the people in a different way than
they have ever seen before. The Federalist never grasped the concept of going out and politicking to gain more votes. They were not assertive enough
to draw the attention of the people to get their vote. Jefferson actually bent the rules and created the Louisiana Purchase when he pushed to purchase
New Orleans from France. When they went to purchase it, he was told by the French emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, expressed he not only wanted to

Democracy In The American Democracy
From the early 1840s to the present day, a democracy can be described as a flawed establishment which has been shaped by the power of wealth and
control, complex social relations, and most importantly the people's desire to live a fulfilling life. Throughout this time period the principles of
democracy, such as equality, protection of the people's interest, and promotion ofhuman rights were shifting in order to increase the democracy
efficiency. Therefore the continued importance of the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and Constitution remain significant since, in
American today, democracy is a system that is continuously being shaped by the people within it. Plato's impression of democracy which was
intellectualized around 384 B.C.E is rather different from the present day understanding of democracy and the power of wealth. As an aristocrat
himself, according to Plato "When the poor win, the result is a democracy." (Plato, p.58). In other words, Plato believed that only kings were
authorized to rule its society, whereas regular everyday people were perceived as ferocious and unable to govern. Plato's awareness of democracy
was established when he realized ordinary people were not born to lead, that only the elite people had the utmost respect, and right to rule over the
lower class. Furthermore, the concept of power and wealth continues to be a crucial stand point in society's then, and now since the exercise of
democracy is known to be a political affair.

Through the study of human history it is evident authoritative and monarch governments prevailed as legitimate authorities but with careful
considerations these political systems were seen as inaccurate by many. New political systems, functions and responsibilities soon began to surface.
Democracy was among these new political systems and argues for the influence of citizens in politics and the protection of rights (Dahl, 1998, p. 44).
Democracy can be found through many political systems around the world particularly in first world countries such as Canada and the United States
of America. Fortunately the notions of democracy can also be found in some developing countries such as India. ¬¬¬Although democratic views
and notions are found throughout Indian politics and its associated practices India does not prove to be completely democratic in relation to Robert
Dahl's criteria of democracy highlighted in his book, On Democracy. Robert Dahl, a political scientist and professor, sets up 5 criteria of democracy
that includes effective participation, voting equality, enlightened understanding, inclusion and control of agenda (Dahl, 1998, p. 36–7). He argues that
a sense of true democracy is founded when all 5 criteria of democracy are fulfilled (Dahl, 1998, p. 36). Unfortunately India is unable to accommodate
the criteria of voting equality and effective participation due to its

Before we take a look on how democracy is influenced and what role does the Constitution play when discussing the effects on democracy, we must
first know what democracy is. The formal definition of democracy is a form of government by the people, but what we need to further evaluate what
this really means. According to David Plotke in his article Representation is democracy, democracy is when the people have representatives who aim to

There are 4 parts of the Constitution that specifically affects democracy and its success in serving the people of America.
The first element of the Constitution I want to dive into is the three branches of government, otherwise knows as the legislative branch, the executive
branch, and the judicial branch. The ideal of the Constitution was to give America a healthy, stable, and legitimate government with limited powers to
avoid conflicts between authority and the people. In other words, the Constitution was designed to dodge totalitarianism. In order to avoid this form
of government, the Constitution came up with an elaborate way to separate powers between the government and the result was the three branches of
government. The three branches of government's job was to ensure a fair and strong government by equally separating power among the three. It's
job as a whole was also to prevent too much power or the abuse of power to one central person in the government. Although this may seem like
enough information on how this affects democracy, we still need to assess exactly what the three branches of government do for us as the people and
how it represents the people of the government since that it was democracy is. The first of the three branches of government is the legislative branch.

Is the United States Truly a Democracy?
The United States government [institution that creates laws and policies that guide the people it is appointed over (Harrison, 9)] was established and
built on the idea to become a democracy [structure of government where policies are created based on popular opinion of the people (Harrison, p. 14)]
by our forefathers as explained in our constitution. However, our understanding of how a democracy should work may not be the reality of how it does
work in our current society. On the surface, the U.S. strives to function as a democracy, but with further understanding, can be perceived as functioning
closer to an oligarchy [government in which a small group hold the political power (Harrison, p. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
194)], weeding out the lesser known candidates. This cycle causes the general population to lose political efficacy [citizen's belief that they can change
their government (Harrison, 6)] creates a general mentality that individuals and small organizations cannot change the government, and leads to an
overall lack of interest and political knowledge. Statistics and research show that this is a cycle that repeats itself over the course of political history.
In more recent years, the U.S. government has been researched and viewed by many as an oligarchy rather than a democracy. Politicians that were
elected are those that had a substantial amount of funding to make their campaign successful (Gilens, p. 564). Some examples of campaign costs
include employees that support the candidate's campaign, consultants, insurance, buildings, furniture, supplies, travel expenses, television commercials,
and other forms of advertising (Washington Post, p. 1). There has also been a trend noted on the amount of money invested in political campaigning
growing over the past few years (Gilens, p. 567). During the 2016 election cycle, the average winning House candidate spent $1.3 million dollars and
the winning Senate candidate spent $10.4 million dollars. Compared to the 2014 election cycle, the average amount spent for House candidates rose

Democracy Essay 1
Democracy is a means for the people to choose their leaders and to hold their leaders accountable for their policies and their conduct in office. The
key role of citizens in a democracy is to participate in public life. Democracy is also a system of rule by laws, not by individuals. Democracy is not a
government. It is a way of thinking and a responsibility. In a democracy there is no corruption in power because it is a transparent system; the
governing doctrine states that citizens have the right to access the documents and proceedings of the government, which allows for effective public ...

In life there is no greater pursuit than that of equal voice. Every day people are fighting for the right to be heard. Democracy is that right on a
grand scale. Democracy is not only being heard, but being listened to. Democracy is when u is given an equal vote on decisions that directly affect
you. And when given this tremendous responsibility, people will surprise you. They rise to the occasion and educate themselves on the issues at
hand. They also work hard to ensure that the next generation is knowledgeable. All citizens are equal under the law. No one may be discriminated
against on the basis of their race religion, ethnic group, or gender. No one may be arrested, imprisoned, or exiled arbitrarily. No one is above the law,
not even a king or an elected president
In a democracy, the youth are educated. From birth they are taught that their voice matters and their vote counts. These are rights they must fight to
maintain and will prosper from. No, democracies are not free of flaws. Some say that there is no way that something as simple as a popular vote
could null the evils of unlawful power or social inequality. These woes are valid, but democracy can work. There are still consequences to right
wrongs, and laws to help keep peace and balance. There is a difference between freedom and chaos.
Without democracy, society suffers. In dictatorships there is no celebration of thought or creativity. A country cannot thrive if

Democracy is the form of government in which the ruling power of a state is legally vested not in any particular class or classes but in the members

Democratic systems by nature prefer to have a system of check and balance so that all power is not rested in one indivdual. This can sometimes lead
to situations where doing any legislation becomes very complex or nearlly impossible. In a parilamentary form of government a hung parlaiment or in
a presidential form of government a President and Parliament from different political parties are examples of such complicated scenarios. A dictator
can however carry out this action throught a decree. The problem faced by Indian governemt in convincing its coalition partners to accept the nuclear
deal with US is an example of such complication.
Democracy can bring even more complications to the developing nations, where resources are scarce and political infrastruture might not be
developed enough to help people make the right democratic choice. In order to increase their chances of victory politicians sometimes play up the
racial sentiments of a community. Such actions can produce big problems in the long term and can lead to cracks in the social fabrics that can be very
complicated to hear for the government.
Many democracies agree to this arguemnt of complexiteis in a democracy. Hence many democracies provide options whereby head of state or
parliament can suspend goverments and granting powers to one person or group of people under

Democracy Is A True Democracy
The ideology of a true democracy no matter how great the thought, is dealt with no different than any other form of government in which it is a race
for power. In the classical sense, true democracy is the equal power of each member of the constituencies; however, practice gives more power to the
members and the line of power gets blurred. To outline it true democracy and practice differ by the vast levels of power and political roles, political
corruption putting democracy's interests at risk, and personal interests undermining any actual change. True democracy does not exist without equal
distribution of power between the people and the government officials. In this matter, democracy's practice gives a greater power to officials over
nonpolitician citizens. Democracy's theory is equal power, but a true democracy would not even include officials whose power can be used for
malpractice. The practice of officials that have more power than people is considered a democracy more as a Democratic–republican to others. In this
example, we vote for the national election to elect the president, however, within this, the electoral college can change the popular vote by basing
their change as to be on behalf of the majority. Thus, citizens don't have the ultimate power or the choice of who is president. Essentially it is an
unfair system such as in Should the Electoral College be abandoned? Robert F Weinhagen Jr. gives an example that "electors may vote for a

Those not born in Athens that lived there were not considered citizens and were not allowed to play a part in choosing how their home was governed.
In a democracy, all people have equal say, yet in Athens, women were oppressed as well. Women were not allowed to vote. In fact, they had no share

Battle For Democracy: The Battle Of Democracy
The Battle for Democracy
The ultimate goal of the framers was to create a constitution that would be representative of the people. A governmental system of this kind was an
entirely new concept in the world. As defined by Greenberg and Page, "A democracy is a system of government in which the people rule by the
many." The three major parts of a democracy are political liberties, political equality, and popular sovereignty. When the three are practiced in balance
this creates a perfect democratic system. The constitution is considered a living being because throughout the years it has changed and evolved to help
us create a better and more just nation. Despite anything the United States and California constitutions striving to be completely democratic, however,
the California constitution does a better job for reflecting the needs and desires of the people.
After the failure of the Articles of Confederation the framers set out to write a constitution that would benefit a majority of the people. That's where
they ran into problems, when defining what exactly constitutes one as a man that was eligible to participate in politics. At the time it was a white
European man who owned property. And because of this in the original constitution the right to vote was denied to non–citizens, blacks, and women ...

Difference Between Democracy And Democracy
There are many forms of government all over the world. Governments are very important to how they allow the population to work together. Two of
the most popular forms of government are a dictatorship and a democracy. Both these governments have their own properties and are unique in every
country they are present in. Democracy is a form of government controlled by the whole population or all the eligible members of the state, usually
through elected representatives. A typical representative democracy means it's the elected representative's job to represent their voters. A democracy is
seen in some of the most powerful states in the world.
Great Britain is one of the original democratic states. They've been a democratic regime for many years and have been a great role model for the rest
of the world. Great Britain has shown that democracy not only brings freedom but peace. Most democratic states are very peaceful.
Singapore had fought for its independence from the colonial grip of Great Britain. It is also a very egalitarian and liberalized country. It has been
one of the biggest trading posts in the world and has become very wealthy. The (PAP) or People's Action Party was the first universal suffrage
movement. It's led the country for many years, provided many social welfare programs and the people are very supportive of it. The party has been
known for imprisonment and harassment but no known disappearances.

Difference Between Democracy And Democracy
The citizens of the United States today refer to their country as a democracy, when in fact, we have a more nuanced form of a government. We are a
federal republic and a constitutional democracy. Republic and democracy are often used interchangeably by the common citizens, and even leaders at
times. But they are not synonyms; quite the opposite actually. The differences in the two approaches can be seen in the fundamentally opposing views
of the political parties in the USA that bear these names.
In its purest form, a democracy means the rule of the majority. They have the potential to turn into what might be best described as 'mob rule'. In such
a situation, the majority takes all the decisions that favor them, while compromising the interests of the minority. If three cats and a mouse are voting,
the three cats can vote for eating the mouse. But, a constitutional democracy is different in the sense that the authority of the majority is limited by
law, so that the rights of the minorities are respected. The power is distributed among various branches of the government. Moreover, there are checks
and balances in place that ensure that there is no abuse of power. The elections in a constitutional democracy are scheduled after a fixed period of
time, and the power is transferred regularly.
On the other hand, in a republic, the government is limited by the constitution or the law and should recognize the sovereignty of the individual. The
concept of a republic pushes the idea

Normative democratic theory deals with the moral foundations of democracy and democratic institutions. It is distinct from descriptive and
explanatory democratic theory. It does not offer in the first instance a scientific study of those societies that are called democratic. It aims to provide an
account of when and why democracy is morally desirable as well as moral principles for guiding the design of democratic institutions. Of course,
normative democratic theory is inherently interdisciplinary and must call on the results of political science, sociology and economics in order to give
this kind of concrete guidance.
This brief outline of normative democratic theory focuses attention on four distinct issues in recent work. First, it ... Show more content on

For instance, Joseph Schumpeter argues (1956, chap. XXI), with some force, that only a highly formal kind of democracy in which citizens vote in an
electoral process for the purpose of selecting competing elites is highly desirable while a conception of democracy that draws on a more ambitious
conception of equality is dangerous. On the other hand, Jean–Jacques Rousseau (1762, Book II, chap. 1) is apt to argue that the formal variety of
democracy is akin to slavery while only robustly egalitarian democracies have political legitimacy. Others have argued that democracy is not desirable
at all. To evaluate their arguments we must decide on the merits of the different principles and conceptions of humanity and society from which they
proceed.
2. The Justification of Democracy
We can evaluate democracy along at least two different dimensions: consequentially, by reference to the outcomes of using it compared with other
methods of political decision making; or intrinsically, by reference to qualities that are inherent in the method, for example, whether there is something
inherently fair about making democratic decisions on matters on which people disagree.

Democracy : A Perfect Democracy
Democracy at its purest form is a system of government, which allows each and every citizen to participate actively and equally in the decisions
being made. In a perfect democracy, the decisions made the government are perfect representations of what the people want. In reality, a perfect
democracy is nearly impossible, especially when dealing with a population as large as the United States, but there are still techniques and systems that
can be implemented into a society in which democracy can be enhanced. One of systems used in the United Sates, which is believed to enhance
democracy is the use of a two party system, where two parties, Democrats and Republicans in the case of the United States, dominate politics within
government. Each party has its own set of beliefs and agenda, which is called a parties line. A parties line represents a specific ideology and
elements specific to the organization. But, voting along party lines in the US congress diminishes democracy because it does not allow for voters to
express their individual opinions to the fullest, and it ultimately does not give the best representation of the public opinion because most people to do
not have beliefs that perfectly align with just one party. In order to understand how party line voting in the US congress diminishes democracy, it is
first necessary to understand the primary roles that political parties serve in a democratic system, and how these roles are negatively affected by party
line voting.

The Roman Republic: Democracy Or Democracy?
The Roman Republic (509 BCE – 30 BCE), one of the world's first 'democracies', was a place where normal people could impact the government's
decisions. It has always been considered a true democracy, but as society delves deeper into the facts, was this really true? During these almost 500
years, the citizens of Rome were allowed some freedoms to impact their own society, but these decisions were not as special to them as was thought.
The Roman Republic was only half democratic because of its constitution, the specifics of the Assemblies, and their voting methods.
The Roman Republic's constitution consisted of three different components: the Consuls/Magistrates, the Senate, and the Assemblies. Consuls were a
group of male patricians that directed the military/government, and they were also known as magistrates. The Senate was a group of patricians or
wealthy plebeians (also known as "New Men") that passed new laws, controlled finance, and advised their former peers, the magistrates. Finally, the
Assemblies, who will be focused on later, were a group of all adult male Roman citizens (not including slaves) who would elect magistrates, vote on
laws, and veto magistrate actions. These groups of people were selected by the majority of people (not including women or ... Show more content on

Therefore, normal people can propose new laws and elect new officials, giving these citizens an edge compared to other civilizations' citizens. In turn,
this clearly shows that because of these ordinary people's' power, the reasoning of the democratic idea is supported, and even promoted. Ultimately, the
Roman Assemblies, both Tribal and Century, back the idea that Rome is ademocracy, and prove that there is some reason to the name Roman

Democracy : The Misunderstanding Of Democracy

Democracy: The Misunderstanding
If you ask the average American citizen what democracy is, you'll probably hear an answer that relates to having rights and freedoms, and being able
to vote for who you want. In reality, only part of this statement is actually true. Yes, living in ademocracy means you are given the choice to vote, but
it does not immediately grant you rights and liberties. Most people assume this but are outright wrong, and don't realize the difference between an
illiberal democracy and a liberal democracy, which is rather significant. A liberal democracy is what we live in here in the United States of America.
We are granted freedoms that not all countries have, and we are given the right to vote as well. This type of government obviously stresses the idea of
liberalism, which puts emphasis on individualism and self–freedoms. Liberalism is really what separates the United States from a number of countries,
especially those that have illiberal democracies. This is the true difference in democracies around the world that most people don't come to recognize.
Illiberal democracies are present in a significant amount of the world's 118 democratic governments, and have been increasing over the last seven
years. This type of government is considered a growth industry and has increased from twenty–two percent to thirty–five percent in the last seven years
(Zakaria 23–24). An

What Is Democracy In American Democracy
Democracies have been around for hundreds of years, dating back to before the word democracy was created by the ancient Greeks. Democracies give
the citizens of the nation power and let them have a say so in politics. Also, the people have many freedoms guaranteed to them unlike other types of
government. The people elect local, state, and national government officials. The local government deals with many different cases. State government
shares most of its power with the national government. Lastly, the national government oversees all the smaller forms of government in the land.
[Thesis] American Democracy fits the definition of democracy because the people are represented fairly through local, state, and national

counties taxes. Local government can't pass or enforce laws that might put judgment on a much bigger area other than its own. We have a choice in
who we vote for to make sure we are represented fairly. As a person who makes us a part of our county, district, or town. We all want the best for the
next generation for our sons and daughters. The people who we vote on as our councilman decide that. What will our schools be like, if we will have

U.s. Democracy And Canadian Democracy
In the contemporary world, democracy is one of the most progressive system of government that states freedom as a core value. Democracy is based
on the free expression of people's opinions, points of view as well as their opposition to the government actions. Citizens have a great control over the
political events taking place in their country because through the elections they can select the right candidate who will be able to represent their
interests. Core values of the democracy such as freedom, equality, pursuit of happiness are similar in different countries. However, the implementation
of democracies may vary. USA andCanada are two big and prosperous countries that can be a prime example of how democracies may vary despite
all the similarities. There are three major differences between US democracy and Canadian democracy such as consensus or in other words substantive
goals of political actions, checks and balances or how do different branches of government work, and the last but not least federalism in regards to the
division of power between federal government and territorial entities. The first and the most important difference between US and Canadian democracy
is consensus. The initial word consensus means general agreement. In terms of politics, consensus means an agreement on the substantive goals of the
country or in other words political program that includes an implementation plan of the alternative solutions to the country's problems or threats.

Democracy: The American Democracy
The American Democracy is dramatically changing. In fact the government is not at its best place at the very moment, but it takes the voice and
actions of the citizens to make it better. Our republic is built on laws, in which the American citizens have adapted to. Over the years, many things
have altered in America, so the Republic should also modify itself, to equalize with how the world is today. There should be an adjustment to the ways
of getting Americans involved. Social media is a perfect way to get started. Research says that President Barack Obama earned most votes through
social media with online activity, to get the public to vote. Honestly, President Obama's campaign showed the wonderful impact that social media can

The Importance Of Democracy In Democracy
American democracy supply its citizens with the most freedom, the most opportunity, the greatest success, and the most comfortable life. A high
number of Americans have lost faith in their democracy. In 1988, United States democratic party was 33%. In 2014, it decreased to 29%. For more
democratic to gain their faith, the democracy have to improve. The humanities can solve this problem by starting with itself. Improving education,
improving oneself as a human being, improving healthcare and improving economics growth.
Education can help people participate in democracy in different ways, including providing them with literacy and other skills to enable them to take
action in political discussions and to be able to get political information through the media easily. Education promotes good governance by giving
citizens the confidence and skills they need to become active members of their society and hold their governments responsible, therefore we need more
people in higher–class occupations. Education reduces poverty, help economic growth, leads to better health and promotes gender equality.
Everyone should come together to enhance themselves as a human being. This action is will be very challenging, but possible. If everyone will take
the time out to compliment themselves, stop making excuses, let go of anger, practice forgiveness, be honest, be helpful, listen to others, be respectful,
educate themselves, and more, there will be massive number of civilized

American democracy is not ideal democracy. Low voter turnout, excessive sums of money that is poured into elections, and the increasingly unpopular
Electoral College leaves American democracy from being an ideal, well–functioning democratic electoral system. American democracy, however, has
never been closer to an ideal democracy than it is now. The endless information voters have due to the Internet allows voters to cast their ballots with
more confidence and information than ever before. More information available to voters means more accountability for elected officials. Votinghas
become much easier and accessible than ever before. Absentee ballots and early voting allows voters to cast their ballots without hassle and on their

Democracy And Democracy : The Definition Of Democracy
Democracy by definition is "a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a
system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections". (Merriam–Webster Dictionary). By breaking this down to more layman
words, it is a government which actions are based on the best interest of its people. Regardless of their social status or racial. When anyone, wherever
they may be, looks up the definition of democracy this is what they expect it to be. As I went through the web and talked to people about their
feelings regarding Democracy many no longer feel this way. Many no longer believe in the "vested in the people" part of the definition. There is a
widespread feeling among people that our government is more vested in the money parts of it and that we are letting it happen by being ignorant.
Money is, no doubt, important part of our Democratic society, but it is a point where it has become the only thing that matters to some of the
politicians. Can we blame them though? Politicians spend countless hours trying to gather donations for their campaigns, as I listened to the podcast in
"Take the money and run for office". It started off with a politician asking for money. It brings up the question why must they constantly ask for money
in the first place. If you think about it, it becomes clear. They need it to compete for races, especially when they have to compete against PAC
supported opponents.

In America today, there is a common misconception concerning the form of government this nation possesses. Some believe it to be a democracy
while others understand it to be a republic. Regardless of what people believe the American form of government to be, it does not change the fact that
it was founded as a representative republic, and therefore, must be maintained and upheld as such. The following paragraphs will show the difference
between a democracy and a republic, describe what form the Founders intended for the American government and explain in what ways this nation has
strayed from the original form of government created by its Founders. First, the meaning of and difference between a democracy and a republic must

This desire continued and fueled the fire for the Declaration of Independence which eventually became the foundation for our governing document: the
U.S. Constitution. In the Preamble to our Constitution, it states, "We, the people of theUnited States, in order to form a more perfect Union...secure the
blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..." (Constitution of the United States – Preamble). It is evident in the very first lines of the
Constitution that the Founders considered the preservation of freedom to be one of the most important features of a government. In addition, the core
principles that the Founders based our government on were drawn from the Bible. Noah Webster, whose ideas were influential in the writing of the
constitution stated, "...the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament or the Christian religion"
(History of the United States). Because the Founders drew their principles from the Bible which reflected the ideals of a republican form of
government, it is evident that they desired such a government based on these principles. Consequently, the Founders not only set up this government
such that its people would elect various levels of officials to represent them but also that those elected officials would be accountable to the higher law
of the Bible. Third, the question must be asked, "In what ways has the

Democracy : A Dominant Form Of Democracy
Democracy has gone through many social changes in the world due to its natural peaceful coexistence with other forms of social and political thought.
These thoughts are able to link with democracy on the basis that, democracy establishes freedom of choice and rule of the people. In relation, there are
many forms of democracy, however there are two dominant forms of democracy that have established order within the nation, the two democracies
are direct and representative democracy. The direct democracy was dominant in traditional society. In the traditional society democracy was direct
where individuals in society participated in law making for all individuals in the society. (Wagschal, 1997, p. 225). The traditional direct democracy
established equality, property and freedom. Traditional democracy role essentially was based on giving rights to individuals within the nation. In
relation, equality principle within the traditional democracy can be linked to the understanding that all individuals in the nation are equal under the
rule of law. Where they are able to own their land as their own property and they are free from arbitrary rule by the government. Direct democracy
allows the people of the nation to participate in their political, economic and social affairs of the nation. (Wagschal, 1997, p. 226). This allows more of
a direct understanding of the individuals of what new laws are being established within the nation. While direct participation establishes a voice for the

Democracy And Its Impact On Democracy
Democracy is a particular form of government the means, "ruled by the people". The Greeks are widely credited for the concept of democracy,
around six B.C. Many political science experts consider the early Greek government, to be a perfect for of democracy. People had the ability to decide
various government issues, and the right to suffrage. Through out time, the concept of democracy was established by many nations. The United States,
is widely credited on making democracy widely used around the world. The democracy we know here in the United States, was not fully defined until
the Age of Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly during the time the United States Declaration of Independence was implemented,
followed by the U.S Constitution. The term democracy, evolved to mean a structured government. The separation of powers, religious freedom,
provide basic civil rights, and the separation of church and state. Modern American democracy consist of elected officials, that represents the people.
Rather than, the people represents themselves. Members of the U.S Congress (House of Representatives and Senators) represent the people, by
tackling various national issues. Since the 1950's, America has successfully propagated the democratic form of government the states of the world.
Democracy consist of six principles: Rule of law (no one is above the law, including the creator). According to Stephenson, Matthew. "Rule of Law as a

Introduction
The relationship between economic growth and democracy has long been discussed and dissected ever since the beginning of the French Revolution
and the democratization of Europe through the 18th and 20th centuries with various revolutions occurring, mostly in revolt to the overt dominance of
the upper classes. Yet, no concrete answer has been defined on whetherdemocracy directly increases economic growth, or that any non–democratic
systems are strictly better at growing an economy. In this paper, there will be an examination of how despite no concrete definite answers about the
correlation between democratic regimes and economic prosperity/growth exist, democracy still heavily encourages and enables for a maximized
economic growth compared to totalitarian or monarchical regimes, through some main principles that define a democratic regime: Rule of law,
legitimate authority, quality of governance, and participation of citizens, by means of humane work conditions, equal participation among classes,
governance motivating the workforce, and less effort and money expunged towards legitimacy. Economic growth shouldn't necessarily come before
democracy as democracy facilitates and potentially maximizes economic growth.
Participation and Opportunity
One of the qualifiers for democracy, active participation of citizens in political and civic life (United Nations[UN], 2005), is necessary for a
prosperous marketplace for all industries which have production in control of

Democracy Vs Democracy
In July 1776, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, stating that all men are created equal and the Founding Fathers form of
government would protect their rights. In the United States, people have individual liberties. Even though the United States has laws it is not
considered a pure democracy, it is a republic. The definitions that is stated between democracy and individual liberty will help most understand that a
democracy undermines a person's rights, and I will prove this from the information that's in our assigned reading. Democracy is a system of
government by the people. It has also been defined as supreme power bestowed in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through
representation called "majority rule". For example, in the old west, if a posse was to chase after and catch a criminal, and the majority felt or voted
that the criminal was guilty and should be hung, then that person would die by the hands of the majority. In Jean–Jacques Rousseau's The Origin of
Civil Society, he writes about seeing a democracy in a family. "The ruler corresponds to the father, and the people to the children; and all, being born
free and equal, alienate their liberty only for their advantage." (Rousseau) The father is the majority rule in this case because he is head of household.
On the other hand, when talking about individual liberty, citizens have alienable rights promised by the Constitution. According to the definition, these

Many different ideologies have been practiced throughout history and many have failed to work. The ideology that I think has created the most
success for the government and its people is democracy. The definition of democracy is a "political system of mass participation, competitive elections,
and human and civil rights (Roskin 88)." This is the clear definition of democracy, but there are many different forms for example there is a
representative democracy and illiberal democracy. These follow the same guideline of democracy, but have there own individual definition.

The winner would be determined by popular vote because it make things less complicated. After the people vote the candidate in they would then be
able to vote on certain issues they would like the government to fix or get rid of. The voting would be direct because then the people would be
voting on exactly what they want. The indirect way of voting allows for the people in power to manipulate the issue to the benefit of the government
and that's not they it should be. The government would control all of the international business that doesn't directly affect the people in my country.
The government would also be allowed to declare war if the people's safety is put in immediate danger. They would have this power because if the
country is being threatened there wouldn't be time to vote on the issue. This ideology wouldn't be necessarily all right wing, but probably in between
middle and right on the spectrum. The people don't have total control over the government, but majority of the power is with the people because the
idea that government needs total control has created societies not so favorable for the people.
In nation building the first obstacle in nation building is identity crisis. This is when people do not consider themselves to be apart of a nation. Many
countries in Africa today have tribes that do not consider themselves to be apart of a nation. The tribes have their own language

Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy

  • 1. Democracy And Its Effect On Democracy Democracy in its most basic form is a type of governing system ruled by the citizens of a particular society. The first form of democracy can be found in ancient Greece, and the modern form of Democracy was established in part by the French revolution because it brought back the idea of rule by the people. Although, for most of history democracy was not viewed in a positive light. According to Mintz, Close, and Croci many people feared democracy because they thought the masses would not act with reason and would try to take away power from the elite classes (2015). It was not until relatively recently in history that democracy became the leading form of governing around the world. This essay will focus on the different manifestations of democracy and how they function. The core of democracy is that the people in a society should have a say in governing and decision making; however in order to be considered a democracy a country must follow other democratic principles. This essay will argue that in many cases practical application of democracy does not always allow the people to have their view adequately translated into government and policy, due to the limitations of their political system. The only real power people have is electing a select few to their positions in government, or voting on decisions and policy decided by those officials. This does not allow for everyone and their views represented in government. This essay will also argue that some democratic systems ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In conclusion, reaching to an absolute verdict of what system U.S really has and whether if it is truly a country that pride itself on democracy or not, seem to be slightly complicated. U.S is truly a great nation with huge population, with that said every opinion of every citizen can differ. Even with all those research and official studies of definition of the system, it will meet with great deal of criticism since all people cannot reach the same decision. • 3. Democracy By John Dewey : Democracy Democracy to me always had a propagandist vibe to it. In pop culture and movies, every instance the subject of democracy arises, it is also accompanied by some US plot to overthrow some South American communist regime. I identified democracy as a political form, a political tool, and my most preferred system of government. The American philosopher John Dewey, however, looks past the veil thatdemocracy's political and economic purposes produce and examines democracy instead as a way of life. Dewey identifies democracy as a truly human way of living, because it demands the participation of all the human beings that reside within its form to contribute to the values the system would provide for. Voting is the mechanism that allows the participants of a democracy to contribute and maintain those values, and honor the foundations that allow democracy to survive as the best form of living. To introduce, to Dewey, the common perception of democracy is hardly fitting of its true definition. Dewey expands our common idea of democracy into a "way of living", but in the general political and governmental sense dictates it as, "the best means so far found, for realizing ends that lie in the wide domain of human relationships and the development of human personality. (1110)" Dewey understands democracy to be a social way to act as an individual. Democracy enforces and idolizes the capabilities of the individual to capitalize on the contributions those capabilities can provide for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Democracy And The Benefits Of Democracy The world is changing, and right now there is a great amount of tension between many of the countries. So how do we solve all of this tension? A democratic government protects the rights of its citizens creating a society where everyone works together to improve the country economically, politically and socially. Before one can begin to discuss the merits of democracy, one must first answer the question what is democracy? In his essay on democracy, Robert Dahl explains how democracy cannot exist without protecting the rights of its citizens. Democracy is more than a system of government, it is also a "system of rights" because rights are "the essential building blocks" of a democratic government (Dahl 100). Democracy builds off of the idea of human rights to create a system of government shaped around a collection of powers which belong to every citizen. Because rights provide the foundation for the democratic system, it cannot be practiced without providing a guarantee of personal rights. Cornel West illustrates how democracy is more than just a type of government, it is a way of life which benefits its citizens. Democracy is a "cultural way of being" which causes people to become "empowered and enlightened" (West 115–16). Democracy changes the way that its citizens think, in democratic societies the culture is based largely around how democracy is beneficial. The cultural influence of democracy causes a change in its citizens– they develop into more sophisticated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Democracy related to our lives by looking for the right thing to do, for every one of us have equality and freedom of speech, we could have multiple ideas it might change the ideology of the country, we also could related the democracy by looking at the facts. The facts are Free Elections, Political Participation, Civil Liberties, and Functioning Government. The democracy is one of the most common types of the government in the modern world. Which give us clear idea of who defied the democracy even in different countries. • 6. Democracy And Its Lack Of Democracy Throughout Plato's Republic in Book VIII, readers are caught up in the conversation about four unjust structures that each structure will succeed the other as society decays. The four unjust structures are explained throughout dialogue and described as timocracy, oligarchy, democracy, and tyranny. Most shocking critique throughout the discussion is about democracy and its ineffectiveness to rule. Plato's disagreement of democracy does not involve of what we are acquainted with today, but rather the idea of democracy. Plato explores the central strain of thegovernment that is acknowledged with liberty and fairness. Also, this form of government known for its embracement of freedom and equality. Plato's description and disagreement about democracy is correct because the consequences of such government is that it leads the population to pursue unnecessary desires. Democracy is the type of government where the rule comes from people. Democracy, as we know it today, gives power to the many and in turn give most importance to the idea of obtaining freedom. Freedom empowers people to pursue their desires and obtain every opportunity they can acquire. People in this government have unlimited mobility and have free speech to their ideas and beliefs. Do we think of the past or present? No answer is wrong, when we think of political structures, there are numerous examples. Politics are one of the main structures that arise continuously throughout known history. "Historians who study ancient civilizations have the daunting task of following the path of societies and cultures on the basis of scant sources. We will then look at some of the state's important laws that were enacted through the initiative process as well as some of the problems with the system as it stands today. The state passed a 'Florida Supermajority Requirement Amendment' or better known as 'Amendment 3' in November of 2006 requiring that all constitutional amendments went from a majority (50% = 1) to a supermajority (60%) vote requirement for passage. Ironically this amendment was approved by a 57.8% vote. The effect that has had and will continue to have on Florida's politics will be looked at as well, highlighting the good... You must register with the state as a political party, and then prove via the number of signatures, 8% of the total number of statewide votes cast in the previous Presidential election, from 13 of the 25 Congressional districts. The Supervisor of Elections has to verify the signatures, and send it to the State Supreme Court for legality issues. If approved, you then have to get more signatures, to qualify for the next general election ballot. (League of Women Voters) Theinitiative is then put on the next general election ballot for the general public to vote yes or no on it. Sixty percent must approve the initiative to make it through to being an Amendment to the Constitution. The legislature still has the responsibility to implement the new Amendment which can take time, or be held up if the legislators have their own political agenda that might vary from the will of the people. They can delay or ignore an approved initiative for quite some time if they so desire. • 9. Democracy Is Better Than A Democracy Being part of a democracy means that the majority will prevail over the minority with no written constitution or rules to keep the minority from being over powered. Where as a republic has a written constitution for rules that are used to keep the majority from overpowering the minority. Just defining these two words one can say being apart of a republic seems more fair than a democracy, since there are rules that everyone must follow to keep everything fair and just. In this day in age it just seems that the rules are pushed aside and either party that is in charge can just do as they please. If our way of life were actually followed by the constitution I am all for being a republic. But we all know that it isn't something that is followed all the time no matter what. So let's find out which one is better than the two a democracy or a republic. So we know from above that a democracy is run by the majority, that means if the majority likes it then it will be followed by all. If the majority does not agree with it then it will be taken away just as easily as it was given. In a democracy all people are allowed to take a vote on laws that will govern them. It is like asking your family if they want fish or chicken for dinner and of course the majority vote wins and that is what everyone will eat for dinner. Anyone that is a minority does not have the power to practice their religion of choice, dress, way of living or many other things that make a person who they are if the ... Jefferson founded the opposition to the Federalist Party of Alexander Hamilton. Democratic–Republicans brought politics to the people in a different way than they have ever seen before. The Federalist never grasped the concept of going out and politicking to gain more votes. They were not assertive enough to draw the attention of the people to get their vote. • 11. Democracy In The American Democracy From the early 1840s to the present day, a democracy can be described as a flawed establishment which has been shaped by the power of wealth and control, complex social relations, and most importantly the people's desire to live a fulfilling life. Throughout this time period the principles of democracy, such as equality, protection of the people's interest, and promotion ofhuman rights were shifting in order to increase the democracy efficiency. Therefore the continued importance of the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and Constitution remain significant since, in American today, democracy is a system that is continuously being shaped by the people within it. Plato's impression of democracy which was intellectualized around 384 B.C.E is rather different from the present day understanding of democracy and the power of wealth. As an aristocrat himself, according to Plato "When the poor win, the result is a democracy." (Plato, p.58). In other words, Plato believed that only kings were authorized to rule its society, whereas regular everyday people were perceived as ferocious and unable to govern. Plato's awareness of democracy was established when he realized ordinary people were not born to lead, that only the elite people had the utmost respect, and right to rule over the lower class. Furthermore, the concept of power and wealth continues to be a crucial stand point in society's then, and now since the exercise of democracy is known to be a political affair. ... Democracy By Robert Dahl : Democracy Democracy in India Bisharo Hassan 1001638310 POL 100Y1 TA: Nick Through the study of human history it is evident authoritative and monarch governments prevailed as legitimate authorities but with careful considerations these political systems were seen as inaccurate by many. New political systems, functions and responsibilities soon began to surface. Democracy was among these new political systems and argues for the influence of citizens in politics and the protection of rights (Dahl, 1998, p. 44). Democracy can be found through many political systems around the world particularly in first world countries such as Canada and the United States of America. Fortunately the notions of democracy can also be found in some developing countries such as India. ¬¬¬Although democratic views and notions are found throughout Indian politics and its associated practices India does not prove to be completely democratic in relation to Robert Dahl's criteria of democracy highlighted in his book, On Democracy. Robert Dahl, a political scientist and professor, sets up 5 criteria of democracy that includes effective participation, voting equality, enlightened understanding, inclusion and control of agenda (Dahl, 1998, p. 36–7). He argues that a sense of true democracy is founded when all 5 criteria of democracy are fulfilled (Dahl, 1998, p. 36). The formal definition of democracy is a form of government by the people, but what we need to further evaluate what this really means. The first element of the Constitution I want to dive into is the three branches of government, otherwise knows as the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. The ideal of the Constitution was to give America a healthy, stable, and legitimate government with limited powers to avoid conflicts between authority and the people. In other words, the Constitution was designed to dodge totalitarianism. In order to avoid this form of government, the Constitution came up with an elaborate way to separate powers between the government and the result was the three branches of government. The three branches of government's job was to ensure a fair and strong government by equally separating power among the three. It's job as a whole was also to prevent too much power or the abuse of power to one central person in the government. Although this may seem like enough information on how this affects democracy, we still need to assess exactly what the three branches of government do for us as the people and

However, our understanding of how a democracy should work may not be the reality of how it does work in our current society. This cycle causes the general population to lose political efficacy [citizen's belief that they can change their government (Harrison, 6)] creates a general mentality that individuals and small organizations cannot change the government, and leads to an overall lack of interest and political knowledge. Statistics and research show that this is a cycle that repeats itself over the course of political history. In more recent years, the U.S. government has been researched and viewed by many as an oligarchy rather than a democracy. Politicians that were elected are those that had a substantial amount of funding to make their campaign successful (Gilens, p. 564). Some examples of campaign costs include employees that support the candidate's campaign, consultants, insurance, buildings, furniture, supplies, travel expenses, television commercials, and other forms of advertising (Washington Post, p. 1). There has also been a trend noted on the amount of money invested in political campaigning growing over the past few years (Gilens, p. 567). During the 2016 election cycle, the average winning House candidate spent $1.3 million dollars and the winning Senate candidate spent $10.4 million dollars. The key role of citizens in a democracy is to participate in public life. Democracy is also a system of rule by laws, not by individuals. Democracy is not a government. And when given this tremendous responsibility, people will surprise you. They rise to the occasion and educate themselves on the issues at hand. Democratic systems by nature prefer to have a system of check and balance so that all power is not rested in one indivdual. This can sometimes lead to situations where doing any legislation becomes very complex or nearlly impossible. In a parilamentary form of government a hung parlaiment or in a presidential form of government a President and Parliament from different political parties are examples of such complicated scenarios. A dictator can however carry out this action throught a decree. The problem faced by Indian governemt in convincing its coalition partners to accept the nuclear deal with US is an example of such complication. Democracy can bring even more complications to the developing nations, where resources are scarce and political infrastruture might not be developed enough to help people make the right democratic choice. In order to increase their chances of victory politicians sometimes play up the racial sentiments of a community. Such actions can produce big problems in the long term and can lead to cracks in the social fabrics that can be very complicated to hear for the government. • 20. Democracy Is A True Democracy The ideology of a true democracy no matter how great the thought, is dealt with no different than any other form of government in which it is a race for power. In the classical sense, true democracy is the equal power of each member of the constituencies; however, practice gives more power to the members and the line of power gets blurred. To outline it true democracy and practice differ by the vast levels of power and political roles, political corruption putting democracy's interests at risk, and personal interests undermining any actual change. True democracy does not exist without equal distribution of power between the people and the government officials. In this matter, democracy's practice gives a greater power to officials over nonpolitician citizens. Democracy's theory is equal power, but a true democracy would not even include officials whose power can be used for malpractice. The practice of officials that have more power than people is considered a democracy more as a Democratic–republican to others. In this example, we vote for the national election to elect the president, however, within this, the electoral college can change the popular vote by basing their change as to be on behalf of the majority. Thus, citizens don't have the ultimate power or the choice of who is president. Essentially it is an unfair system such as in Should the Electoral College be abandoned? A governmental system of this kind was an entirely new concept in the world. As defined by Greenberg and Page, "A democracy is a system of government in which the people rule by the many." The three major parts of a democracy are political liberties, political equality, and popular sovereignty. When the three are practiced in balance this creates a perfect democratic system. The constitution is considered a living being because throughout the years it has changed and evolved to help us create a better and more just nation. Despite anything the United States and California constitutions striving to be completely democratic, however, the California constitution does a better job for reflecting the needs and desires of the people. After the failure of the Articles of Confederation the framers set out to write a constitution that would benefit a majority of the people. That's where they ran into problems, when defining what exactly constitutes one as a man that was eligible to participate in politics. At the time it was a white European man who owned property. And because of this in the original constitution the right to vote was denied to non–citizens, blacks, and women ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An initiative as stated by Field is, "a process by which citizens can propose a state or local law or amendment to the state constitution by signing a formal petition asking that it be submitted as a ballot position". This shows that unlike the US constitution the California constitution is more reflective of what the people really want. • 23. Difference Between Democracy And Democracy There are many forms of government all over the world. Governments are very important to how they allow the population to work together. Two of the most popular forms of government are a dictatorship and a democracy. Both these governments have their own properties and are unique in every country they are present in. Democracy is a form of government controlled by the whole population or all the eligible members of the state, usually through elected representatives. A typical representative democracy means it's the elected representative's job to represent their voters. A democracy is seen in some of the most powerful states in the world. Great Britain is one of the original democratic states. They've been a democratic regime for many years and have been a great role model for the rest of the world. Great Britain has shown that democracy not only brings freedom but peace. Most democratic states are very peaceful. Singapore had fought for its independence from the colonial grip of Great Britain. It is also a very egalitarian and liberalized country. It has been one of the biggest trading posts in the world and has become very wealthy. The (PAP) or People's Action Party was the first universal suffrage movement. It's led the country for many years, provided many social welfare programs and the people are very supportive of it. The party has been known for imprisonment and harassment but no known disappearances. Dictatorships are mostly a bad thing but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Difference Between Democracy And Democracy The citizens of the United States today refer to their country as a democracy, when in fact, we have a more nuanced form of a government. We are a federal republic and a constitutional democracy. Republic and democracy are often used interchangeably by the common citizens, and even leaders at times. But they are not synonyms; quite the opposite actually. The differences in the two approaches can be seen in the fundamentally opposing views of the political parties in the USA that bear these names. In its purest form, a democracy means the rule of the majority. They have the potential to turn into what might be best described as 'mob rule'. In such a situation, the majority takes all the decisions that favor them, while compromising the interests of the minority. If three cats and a mouse are voting, the three cats can vote for eating the mouse. But, a constitutional democracy is different in the sense that the authority of the majority is limited by law, so that the rights of the minorities are respected. The power is distributed among various branches of the government. Moreover, there are checks and balances in place that ensure that there is no abuse of power. The elections in a constitutional democracy are scheduled after a fixed period of time, and the power is transferred regularly. On the other hand, in a republic, the government is limited by the constitution or the law and should recognize the sovereignty of the individual. The concept of a republic pushes the idea ... It does not offer in the first instance a scientific study of those societies that are called democratic. It aims to provide an account of when and why democracy is morally desirable as well as moral principles for guiding the design of democratic institutions. Of course, normative democratic theory is inherently interdisciplinary and must call on the results of political science, sociology and economics in order to give this kind of concrete guidance. This brief outline of normative democratic theory focuses attention on four distinct issues in recent work. First, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, Joseph Schumpeter argues (1956, chap. XXI), with some force, that only a highly formal kind of democracy in which citizens vote in an electoral process for the purpose of selecting competing elites is highly desirable while a conception of democracy that draws on a more ambitious conception of equality is dangerous. On the other hand, Jean–Jacques Rousseau (1762, Book II, chap. 1) is apt to argue that the formal variety of democracy is akin to slavery while only robustly egalitarian democracies have political legitimacy. Others have argued that democracy is not desirable at all. To evaluate their arguments we must decide on the merits of the different principles and conceptions of humanity and society from which they proceed. 2. The Justification of Democracy We can evaluate democracy along at least two different dimensions: consequentially, by reference to the outcomes of using it compared with other methods of political decision making; or intrinsically, by reference to qualities that are inherent in the method, for example, whether there is something inherently fair about making democratic decisions on matters on which people disagree. 2.1 Instrumentalism 2.1.1 Instrumental Arguments in Favor of Democracy Two kinds of in instrumental benefits are commonly attributed to democracy: relatively good laws and policies and improvements in the characters of the

  • 27. Democracy : A Perfect Democracy Democracy at its purest form is a system of government, which allows each and every citizen to participate actively and equally in the decisions being made. In a perfect democracy, the decisions made the government are perfect representations of what the people want. In reality, a perfect democracy is nearly impossible, especially when dealing with a population as large as the United States, but there are still techniques and systems that can be implemented into a society in which democracy can be enhanced. One of systems used in the United Sates, which is believed to enhance democracy is the use of a two party system, where two parties, Democrats and Republicans in the case of the United States, dominate politics within government. Each party has its own set of beliefs and agenda, which is called a parties line. A parties line represents a specific ideology and elements specific to the organization. But, voting along party lines in the US congress diminishes democracy because it does not allow for voters to express their individual opinions to the fullest, and it ultimately does not give the best representation of the public opinion because most people to do not have beliefs that perfectly align with just one party. In order to understand how party line voting in the US congress diminishes democracy, it is first necessary to understand the primary roles that political parties serve in a democratic system, and how these roles are negatively affected by party line voting. ... • 28. The Roman Republic: Democracy Or Democracy? The Roman Republic (509 BCE – 30 BCE), one of the world's first 'democracies', was a place where normal people could impact the government's decisions. It has always been considered a true democracy, but as society delves deeper into the facts, was this really true? During these almost 500 years, the citizens of Rome were allowed some freedoms to impact their own society, but these decisions were not as special to them as was thought. The Roman Republic was only half democratic because of its constitution, the specifics of the Assemblies, and their voting methods. The Roman Republic's constitution consisted of three different components: the Consuls/Magistrates, the Senate, and the Assemblies. Consuls were a group of male patricians that directed the military/government, and they were also known as magistrates. The Senate was a group of patricians or wealthy plebeians (also known as "New Men") that passed new laws, controlled finance, and advised their former peers, the magistrates. Finally, the Assemblies, who will be focused on later, were a group of all adult male Roman citizens (not including slaves) who would elect magistrates, vote on laws, and veto magistrate actions. • 29. Democracy : The Misunderstanding Of Democracy Deven Moron November 12, 2014 Professor Helligso Government Democracy: The Misunderstanding If you ask the average American citizen what democracy is, you'll probably hear an answer that relates to having rights and freedoms, and being able to vote for who you want. In reality, only part of this statement is actually true. Yes, living in ademocracy means you are given the choice to vote, but it does not immediately grant you rights and liberties. Most people assume this but are outright wrong, and don't realize the difference between an illiberal democracy and a liberal democracy, which is rather significant. A liberal democracy is what we live in here in the United States of America. We are granted freedoms that not all countries have, and we are given the right to vote as well. This type of government obviously stresses the idea of liberalism, which puts emphasis on individualism and self–freedoms. Liberalism is really what separates the United States from a number of countries, especially those that have illiberal democracies. This is the true difference in democracies around the world that most people don't come to recognize. Illiberal democracies are present in a significant amount of the world's 118 democratic governments, and have been increasing over the last seven years. This type of government is considered a growth industry and has increased from twenty–two percent to thirty–five percent in the last seven years (Zakaria 23–24). An ... Democracy is based on the free expression of people's opinions, points of view as well as their opposition to the government actions. Citizens have a great control over the political events taking place in their country because through the elections they can select the right candidate who will be able to represent their interests. Core values of the democracy such as freedom, equality, pursuit of happiness are similar in different countries. However, the implementation of democracies may vary. USA andCanada are two big and prosperous countries that can be a prime example of how democracies may vary despite all the similarities. There are three major differences between US democracy and Canadian democracy such as consensus or in other words substantive goals of political actions, checks and balances or how do different branches of government work, and the last but not least federalism in regards to the division of power between federal government and territorial entities. The first and the most important difference between US and Canadian democracy is consensus. The initial word consensus means general agreement. Education can help people participate in democracy in different ways, including providing them with literacy and other skills to enable them to take action in political discussions and to be able to get political information through the media easily. Education promotes good governance by giving citizens the confidence and skills they need to become active members of their society and hold their governments responsible, therefore we need more people in higher–class occupations. • 35. Democracy And Democracy : The Definition Of Democracy Democracy by definition is "a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections". (Merriam–Webster Dictionary). By breaking this down to more layman words, it is a government which actions are based on the best interest of its people. Regardless of their social status or racial. When anyone, wherever they may be, looks up the definition of democracy this is what they expect it to be. As I went through the web and talked to people about their feelings regarding Democracy many no longer feel this way. Many no longer believe in the "vested in the people" part of the definition. There is a widespread feeling among people that our government is more vested in the money parts of it and that we are letting it happen by being ignorant. Money is, no doubt, important part of our Democratic society, but it is a point where it has become the only thing that matters to some of the politicians. Can we blame them though? Politicians spend countless hours trying to gather donations for their campaigns, as I listened to the podcast in "Take the money and run for office". It started off with a politician asking for money. It brings up the question why must they constantly ask for money in the first place. If you think about it, it becomes clear. They need it to compete for races, especially when they have to compete against PAC supported opponents. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

(Constitution of the United States – Preamble). It is evident in the very first lines of the Constitution that the Founders considered the preservation of freedom to be one of the most important features of a government. In addition, the core principles that the Founders based our government on were drawn from the Bible. Noah Webster, whose ideas were influential in the writing of the constitution stated, "...the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament or the Christian religion" (History of the United States). Because the Founders drew their principles from the Bible which reflected the ideals of a republican form of government, it is evident that they desired such a government based on these principles. These thoughts are able to link with democracy on the basis that, democracy establishes freedom of choice and rule of the people. In relation, there are many forms of democracy, however there are two dominant forms of democracy that have established order within the nation, the two democracies are direct and representative democracy. The direct democracy was dominant in traditional society. In the traditional society democracy was direct where individuals in society participated in law making for all individuals in the society. (Wagschal, 1997, p. 225). The traditional direct democracy established equality, property and freedom. Traditional democracy role essentially was based on giving rights to individuals within the nation. In relation, equality principle within the traditional democracy can be linked to the understanding that all individuals in the nation are equal under the rule of law. Where they are able to own their land as their own property and they are free from arbitrary rule by the government. Direct democracy allows the people of the nation to participate in their political, economic and social affairs of the nation. (Wagschal, 1997, p. 226). The Greeks are widely credited for the concept of democracy, around six B.C. Many political science experts consider the early Greek government, to be a perfect for of democracy. People had the ability to decide various government issues, and the right to suffrage. Through out time, the concept of democracy was established by many nations. The United States, is widely credited on making democracy widely used around the world. The democracy we know here in the United States, was not fully defined until the Age of Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly during the time the United States Declaration of Independence was implemented, followed by the U.S Constitution. Democracy And Democracy Introduction The relationship between economic growth and democracy has long been discussed and dissected ever since the beginning of the French Revolution and the democratization of Europe through the 18th and 20th centuries with various revolutions occurring, mostly in revolt to the overt dominance of the upper classes. Yet, no concrete answer has been defined on whetherdemocracy directly increases economic growth, or that any non–democratic systems are strictly better at growing an economy. In this paper, there will be an examination of how despite no concrete definite answers about the correlation between democratic regimes and economic prosperity/growth exist, democracy still heavily encourages and enables for a maximized economic growth compared to totalitarian or monarchical regimes, through some main principles that define a democratic regime: Rule of law, legitimate authority, quality of governance, and participation of citizens, by means of humane work conditions, equal participation among classes, governance motivating the workforce, and less effort and money expunged towards legitimacy. Economic growth shouldn't necessarily come before democracy as democracy facilitates and potentially maximizes economic growth. Democracy Vs Democracy In July 1776, Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, stating that all men are created equal and the Founding Fathers form of government would protect their rights. In the United States, people have individual liberties. Even though the United States has laws it is not considered a pure democracy, it is a republic. The definitions that is stated between democracy and individual liberty will help most understand that a democracy undermines a person's rights, and I will prove this from the information that's in our assigned reading. Democracy is a system of government by the people. It has also been defined as supreme power bestowed in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through representation called "majority rule". For example, in the old west, if a posse was to chase after and catch a criminal, and the majority felt or voted that the criminal was guilty and should be hung, then that person would die by the hands of the majority. In Jean–Jacques Rousseau's The Origin of Civil Society, he writes about seeing a democracy in a family. "The ruler corresponds to the father, and the people to the children; and all, being born free and equal, alienate their liberty only for their advantage." (Rousseau) The father is the majority rule in this case because he is head of household. The indirect way of voting allows for the people in power to manipulate the issue to the benefit of the government and that's not they it should be.
