Contrasting Theories on the Extinction of Dinosaurs Essay...
So what killed the dinosaurs? Without having any background education in science it is hard for the general public to comprehend such matters and
they rely on the knowledge of the scientists in this field. Although there has been much research on the subject nobody has come up with a conclusive
answer. And we are left to read the countless articles, all having their own opinions as to themass extinction. One such theory is that a shift in the solar
system could have caused the mass destruction. According to an article published in Nature magazine,
"A bizarre wobble 65 million years ago, perturbing the orbits of Mars, Earth and Mercury, may have caused the demise of the dinosaurs, new models
of the Solar System suggest."

In this article other ideas are mentioned about what came after the meteorite hit,
"Some have proposed that this hot debris would have ignited vegetation wherever it fell to earth. Others believe a gigantic fireball, rising over
Chicxulub, would have spread hot material over the planet."
This researcher proposes that the dinosaurs did not die of heat, in fact she thinks the opposite, that they froze to death instead. Both articles have the
same idea about a meteorite hitting the earth yet there is no concrete evidence as to what caused the meteorite to strike and what it did when it got here.
Illustrated in an article, also featured in Nature magazine, is the competition between scientists to find any knowledge leading to an answer and their
differing views on the subject. Again the theory of debris blocking sunlight and stopping photosynthesis is brought up but it is apparent that it is only
one view in a sea of many.
"A minority disputes this theory, arguing that other events–such as volcanic eruptions, sea–level changes or a series of impacts–were to blame for the
spectacular loss of species that occurred at the transition between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods..."
The article explains the consequences of their efforts to drill into the Chicxulub crater in Mexico, the site where the asteroid supposedly struck. There
was a lot of arguments as to which scientist would take the core section to analyze. In the end

The Take Over Of The Children
The Take–Over of the Children
Are you a literary festival virgin? Are you clueless about what to wear and expect? Have no fear, I am here to help. I too was a lit–fest–virgin until
recently when I unexpectedly embarked upon something that has made me look at literature differently.
I'm a student at Newman University in Birmingham and honestly, when I heard the words 'literary festival' my heart sank to somewhere not appropriate
to mention (it begins with 'b' and ends in 'um'). I panicked before the events, on my first event, I didn't know what to wear. Did I go classy and
middle–class or put on my best Miss Moneypenny glasses and borrow my Nan's cardigan? Really, I was so flustered trying to get into Birmingham
city centre (which took an hour) that when I arrived my jacket was screwed up in my bag and my hair was mostly in my mouth. So instead I just
went with big fluffy comfort clothes and my paper and pen. Turns out, that you can wear what you like. So that is exactly what I did for the rest of my
time.
"The Cardigan Brigade"
When I think of literary festivals and the kinds of people they attract my mind automatically thinks of 'the cardigan brigade', middle–class men and
women fawning over books while sipping wine and talking about the deep workings of the books sub–plot and other bullshit.
When I got there, my ideas of festival–goers were completely blown out of the water. Since it was my first time at a festival, I went all in and bought
a festival pass so that I could

Harold PinterВґs Among the Hidden and the Theme of Propaganda
"It's so easy for propaganda to work, and dissent to be mocked," believes Harold Pinter, Nobel Prize–winning English playwright, screenwriter, director
and actor. Various propaganda from the totalitarian government of Among the Hidden will affect citizens, baron or farmer. Either way, there will be
attempts to voice other sides of the story. Thegovernment is spreading lies about the population police; their deceptive ways will change citizen's lives.
Luke is the third child of a farmer's family, and propaganda deeply interfered with his life. Ever since he was a toddler, he was obliged to a strict set of
rules from his paranoid parents. "Then they started running all that on TV about the Population Police, how the Population Police had ways of finding
out everything, how they'd do anything to enforce the law... And your dad started hearing rumors in town, about other babies..." (10–11) Luke's mother
replied to his questioning. His mother was telling him about the government's propaganda, the propaganda they had believed. Luke's parents fell right
into the government's trap of lies. Therefore, Luke was forbidden from watching TV, using the computer, or calling someone on the phone, blocking
him from the outside world. Being a farmer's third child practically meant Luke was clueless when it came to real life. The doctrines of the government
changed Luke's life.
Barons were impacted, in a distinct way. "They say. But everybody knows the Government's not that competent,"

The Secret Compartment Of The Room
Nightburn closed the journal and replaced it in the secret compartment in his desk. He would read more later, but for now he was weary from all the
apportation he had performed that day. He pushed his chair back, stood up and walked out onto the balcony. It was late evening and he hadn't eaten
all day and decided he should make an appearance to avoid undue suspicion even if it was late. Washing up, he changed into his usual attire and left his
room for the dining hall. Voices drifted down the corridor as he approached the room, although he found most of the tables unoccupied except one near
the door where a few members of his personal guard sat and his own. Sara, Balthazar, Kane and Faine sat conversing as he walked over to join ... Show

Balthazar informed him of his plans to be away for the next few weeks checking on the affairs of other order members as he felt it would assist them
with future plans if he knew how the other members viewed Nightburn's return. Nodding as he ate, the others soon joined in the conversation with
some minor matters that had occurred during recruitment of new troops. Even though the servants cleared the table, they still sat for some time
finishing their glasses of wine and talking about this and that, nothing of real concern. Relieved that no one had commented on his late arrival, he
yawned, only then realizing how truly tired he had become and excused himself and retired to his room, finding a bath drawn with clean towels and
the bedding changed. He truly appreciated his service staff at that moment. Stripping off his clothes, he stepped into the bathtub, but took only the
time to bathe himself because the bed was so appealing. Having scrubbed off all the dirt from the day, he stepped out, dried himself with the towels
left by the servant, dressed in his bed attire, and plopped his tired body into bed. When his head hit the pillow, he was fast asleep.
The next morning, Nightburn awoke, eager to find the hidden room, he had read about in his father's journal, and dressed quickly. Although early, the
guards would be changing shifts soon making it easier to get to the north wing unseen. He stepped into the north wing library

Stranger Than Fiction Sequence
#1 Stranger Than Fiction's opening sequence is a single sequence shot, where the camera is flying in from space towards the earth, continuing down
over a city, flying by building with a low frequency "Whoosh", through buildings via open windows, and coming to a stop inside a darkened room,
centered on a wrist watch with a fluorescent blue display. A voice over begins and says "This is the story ofHarold Crick, and his wrist watch", (Voice
over by Karen Eiffel, played by Emma Thompson). The sequence continues showing a typical mundane day for Harold Crick, (Played by Will
Farrell), a Senior Agent for the Internal Revenue Service, and concludes showing Harold going to bed, then it cuts to show a man giving his son a
bicycle as a gift, and a young woman searching the classified ads for a job. Throughout the sequence the voice over describes the way Harold
approaches life. Illustrating his peculiarities are "Document like Graphics" interlaced with Harold on the screen, highlighting Harold's affinity for
documented facts and figures, and the voice over occasionally interjects thoughts from Harold's watch. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For much of my life I have felt I have just been going through the motions, not living my life to the fullest. I have dreams that have gone unrealized,
and a few regrets, and this film speaks to that condition. In a kind of quirky way, this film cries out for each of us to live the life we've always
wanted. Get involved with those around us. Too often we become mired down in day to day minutia, and by the time we shake ourselves awake,
more years have passed than are still left for us to live. When I saw this film was an option for this assignment, I was thrilled. I have recommended
this film to friends and family, the casting is perfect, the music scores the film perfectly, the story is quirky and a bit off center, and it all combines

High School Concert Choir Report
The Mount Eden High School Concert Choir that performed at the First Presbyterian Church were truly astonishing. This concert took place on May
4th at 7:30 PM.The director of this choir is Ken Rawdon, and he has been teaching the choirs at Mount Eden High School for a long time. This choir
is a high school choir, and they are one of the best choirs in the state. They even have gotten 1st place at Golden State numerous times! This concert
was a very enjoyable concert, and it was filled with a variety of music; all the pieces were very interesting and well–sung. The choices of songs that
were sung throughout the concert were mostly religious, and all of them had some cool sounds that the singers made by themselves. When the
women's' parts came in, the notes had a tendency to be really high, which put more power into the song that they were singing. Many of the songs
were in a variety of languages, and they were also very difficult to sing, musically. The appearance of the Mount EdenHigh School Concert Choir was

The song was very meaningful and very mesmerizing. My least favorite song was "Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine" because the diction
in that song was not good, it sounded as if the song went too fast, and the solo percussionists weren't loud enough to make a significant difference
to the song. If the percussion was heard more clearly, the song would have been more meaningful. It also would have sounded better, with the fast
words and all. Overall, the concert was really good and had lovely songs. This was a concert that had really good vowels, and all of their songs
sounded good for the most part. With all of their musical talents, it is not a shock that Mount Eden High School Concert Choir was first place in the

The Use Of Group Work And Family Group Conferencing As...
Task 1 Analyse the use of Group work/family group conferencing as methods of intervention. Group Work This work will focus on the meaning, the
five stages of Tuckman's theory, the approaches and the uses of group work. Group work refers to a method of social work practice which is
concerned with the recognition and use of processes which occur when three or more people work together towards a common purpose (Trevithick,
2005). According to Garvin, Gutierrez and Galinsky (2004), the properties that can be use to describe and change group on which the influence may
have an impact include group characteristics, competencies, conditions, change and context. A group should be small between five to nine persons, so
that each one will be able to relate and engage every member in the group. The group is viewed as a system, the condition of any member affects the
other (Fatout, 1992). The five stage Tuckman's theory (1965) namely forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning focuses on the way in
which a group handles a task from the beginning to completion. The main group work approaches are cognitive behaviourist, feminist, psychoanalytic
and humanistic approaches. Knowledge of theory enhances effectiveness of group work. Since much of our time is spend in groups, it is helpful to

Film Analysis : The Twelve Angry Men
"Don't judge so you shall not be judged" (Luke 6:37), is a famous proverb quote that many people go by. But why is it that people judge? Or
assume that someone is already guilty of a crime based on their race, skin color, economic status or family background? If someone has to make a
judgment, he has to be certain of the facts surrounding the situation. Sentencing a person to die is a very crucial decision and the same reason goes
into setting a guilty person free. Everybody deserves a fair and thorough trial. Judging a person according to someone else's standards is not fair. In
the 1957 Sydney Lumet film, The Twelve Angry Men, 12 jurors decided the fate of an 18–year boy, who was accused of killing his own father. The
situation gradually transitioned from conflicting to agreeable and jurors' characters changed from vindictive to considerate. The movie circled around
the arguments on how people take a decision on innocence versus guilt in our democratic society. The increasing angst among the men was due to their
different family backgrounds, personal differences, and the extremely inconvenient environment they are in.
What made the movie more interesting was the jurors' family background was so diverse. Putting them all together in one room can be difficult and
explosive. The unique personalities of the characters added more drama into scenes and the whole movie would have been awfully dull if not for the
strong and persuasive dialogues and remarks they threw at each other. Jurors
number 3, 10 and 7 were the most critical and mean. Anyone can say that they grew up in a harsh environment with authoritarian parents. They were
the men who made very demeaning remarks and made a direct attack on the boy's personality. If jurors based their judgment on personal predispositions
and prejudices, anybody who is on trial will not stand a chance of a fair hearing. Of course, it is impossible to have all the jurors come with the same
family backgrounds. That is the whole point of the jury; to remove any form of bias towards the accused and by looking through the facts and not just
relying on the evidence provided by the unreliable witnesses, which could only be circumstantial.
As the movie progressed, the men became

The Importance Of Referent Power In Music
The power to influence people to do something depends on the knowledge I have concerning the thing and this type of power is called expert power
(Hughes, Ginnett, &Curphy, 2015). For example, as the choir director of my church back in Ghana, I have a lot of influence on the choir members as
individuals and the choir as a whole because of my knowledge and experience in music. The knowledge and experience I have in music wields me
more power even over anyone I meet for the first time doing music. As a result, I influence the songs we sing at church, the commitment level of the
members and decision–making processes towards the choir's development.
Referent power is the power that people have over followers because of the relationship between them (Hughes, et al, 2015). I have a low level in
referent power at the beginning of my relationship with people around me and even at work because of my personality. I am an introvert and it takes
a long time for me to get attached to people around me. For example, when I was working with one of the universities back in Ghana as the
administrative assistant to the liaison officer of the university, it took about three months for me to get closer to the secretary.
Based on the theory of referent power, the secretary has traits of a referent power. This is because of the strong relationship that developed between us
after I got acquainted to her. Through that, she influenced my attitude towards handling student complaints about

Rhetorical Analysis Of Harold Pinter 's ' The Room '
INTRODUCTION
I'm convinced that what happens in my plays could happen anywhere, at any time, in any place, although the events may seem unfamiliar at first
glance. If you press me for a definition, I'd say that what goes in my plays is realistic, but what I'm doing is not realism" (Pinter, Harold Pinter: Plays,
2 ix)
Widely acknowledged as one of the great post–war generation dramatists, Harold Pinter's fame rests on not only his popular dramas but also on his
political activism which is rooted in his concern for people and their condition in realms which can be termed as social, professional or political. In
fact it can be said that many of his works starting from the early comedies of menace to the later overtly political plays run ... Show more content on

This triggers an interrogation as to what prompts Pinter to withhold information from the audience or to rely on ambiguity. The answer is the
illusionary nature of truth. Truth to one can be a lie to another and to present something as "fact" is highly questionable, owing to the suspicion
which others may have with regard to its authenticity. As Pinter knew that the only thing that can be termed as close to truth is not the cause but
the effects of an action as seen through the naked eye of an impartial witness, his plays abound in ambiguity regarding the motivations of the
characters but clarity in the depiction of characters' acts of violence and the effect of it on their victims. On a metaphorical level, the reason why
Pinter refrains from revealing his characters' identity and motivations is that he wants the characters' acts of violence or suffering not to be
localized or restricted to a particular country, state, group or clan. Instead he wants the aggressors' acts of violence and the victims' suffering to
symbolize the despotic acts of all tyrannical rulers or state and suffering of all abjected or oppressed people in this world consecutively. His plays are
a manifestation of the idea that violence is a universal reality and all acts of violence in the society such as direct, structural and cultural violence are
pathologies or

The feudal system pyramid of power
[http://vanderland.weebly.com/the–feudal–system.html]
It starts at the top with the king granting his land to a baron for soldiers all the way down to a peasant getting land to grow crops. Under the feudal
system land is granted to people for service, which means if you stay loyal and remain a good person you were granted with some land as a thank
you. The main and largest society in the feudal system was the peasants or serfs that owned no land and had no power. Most peasants worked on
farms and lived in the countryside in order to supply the upper class with popular crops. Along with this everybody in the society during the
medieval times were expected to attend a Catholic church because everyone lived in fear of being sent to hell. Many prayed for good luck in war,
even though they were happy to die fighting because they believed you were the dying in gods hands. In reward for obeying the rules of church,
which was to attend all rituals and pay taxes, you were believed to be spending your afterlife in heaven and eternity. In contrast, if one was to
commit any sins you were sent to hell as punishment. Purgatory is in between heaven and hell. This was believed to take place when you committed
a sin but God gave you a chance to still go to heaven. There, you would pay for your sins before entering

Essay on The Personality of Othello
The Personality of Othello
Othello's speech to Brabantio and the Duke in Act 1, Scene 3 is of major importance in describing Othello's personality. This long speech, found in
lines 149 to 196, shows Othello for the first time as a person with depth and less as a soldier. This speech is important to the book as a whole because
it is a testimony to the strength of the love between Othello and Desdemona, which will later play a major role in the plot. It is also one of the first
times that we see Othello trying to influence his audience with his words. The speech given by Othello is intended to convince Brabantio that
Desdemona is with him willfully, and not by "spells and medicines bought of montebanks" (line 74).

And bade me, if I had a friend that loved her,

And that would woo her. Upon this hint I spake.
She loved me for the dangers I had passed,
And I loved her that she did pity them.

To influence his audience, Othello uses logic as well as an entrancing tone that surprises and allures his audience of Brabantio and the duke. Othello
offers to tell his story, despite his discomfort with words. Othello tells the men that, "Rude am I in my speech, and little blessed with the soft phrase
of peace. . . and therefore little shall I grace my cause in speaking for myself." (lines 96–104) This preview to his speech gives the men a feeling that
he's going to be rough and unlearned when he talks, and definitely unworthy of Desdemona. This idea is quickly dismissed when he does begin to talk,
almost magically, and it completely puts Othello in a good light. His tone, imagery, and diction all add to the

The Power of the Family in White Noise Essay examples
The Power of the Family in White Noise
Don Dellilo's protagonist in his novel "White Noise," Jack Gladney, has a "nuclear family" that is, ostensibly, a prime example of the disjointed nature
way of the "family" of the 80's and 90's –– what with Jack's multiple past marriages and the fact that his children aren't all related. It's basically the
antipodal image of the 1950's "nuclear family." Despite this surface–level disjointedness, it is his family and the "extrasensory rapport" that he shares
with them allows Jack to survive in his world. Murray, Jack's friend, argues that "The family is strongest where objective reality is most likely to be
misinterpreted" (82). Heinrich, Jack's son, explicates this notion in his constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So in recounting "the smell of panties" etc., and viewing such encounters with either "irony, sympathy and fond amusement," Jack is able not only to
affirm the present and escape the past, but accomplishes something much larger: namely the ability to affirm the "realness" of such feelings. Thus the
family, in this instance Babette, serves as the medium through which Jack is able to overcome Heinrich's skepticism (which is representative of
modern "science" (24)) as to the "reality" of human emotions. DeLillo's image, moreover, of Jack and Babette "rescuing" themselves "from the past"
also suggests that without family or someone to commune with, man can become lost in the past.
DeLillo's novel is almost obsessively concerned with appliances: TVs, radios, microwaves etc. They are omnipresent, not only in the characters
worlds but within the narrative itself. DeLillo repeatedly interrupts his narrative with sentences like "The TV said: And other trends that could
dramatically impact our portfolio" (61) or "MasterCard, Visa, American Express" (100) or "That chirping sound was just the radiator" (94). Just as
Jack's world is one suffused with such objects, so too is the narrative, a technique which DeLillo uses to force the reader into Jack Gladney's world.
Objects play a dualistic role in Jack's familial life. Jack tells us that

The Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka
In Franz Kafka's short novella, The Metamorphosis, he presents the transformation of a man into an insect and the family's adaptations to this change.
Once the proud man of the house who brought in the revenue, Gregor is now an insect that cannot do anything but survive. At the beginning of the
novel, the family tries to accommodate for the insect by feeding him and making him feel as comfortable as possible. However, as time goes on, they
grow more and more tiresome of the nuisance living in their home. All the while, the family is adapting to being self–sufficient instead of relying on
the hard–working Gregor. By turning the tables for Gregor, Kafka shows the audience the conversion of a once–helpless family slowly building into an

Darwinism And Survival In White Fang, By Jack London
White Fang, written by Jack London, is a wonderful adventure novel that vividly depicts the life of a wolf by the name of White Fang. Throughout the
course of the novel, White Fang goes through numerous learning experiences as he interacts with humans and other wolves from Alaska around the
turn of the century. Jack London uses the events that transpire during White Fang's life to illustrate that only the cunning, intelligent, and strong will be
able to survive. The ideas of Darwinism and survival are reinforced by almost every action that takes place in the novel. Man is shown defeating nature
through superior intelligence, a wolf cub conquers his puppy–hood, and a young wolf survives despite the hardships placed upon him by man.

He comprehends the 'eat or be eaten'; structure of animal society and knows that he must eat and avoid being eaten to guarantee his survival.
This concept of survival is reinforced as White Fang has his first encounter with man. His first instinct is to attack when he sees his half–wolf half–dog
mother recaptured by Indians, and he acts on this instinct. The rocks thrown by the Indians, however, remind him that he is a mere pup fighting
against gods. Because of his intelligence, White Fang knows when to submit in order to keep his life. All of his actions are predicated on the need to
live.
White Fang spends the majority of his early life in retreat, but this quickly changes. He soon grows into a savage and voluminous beast as a direct
result of his persecution and mistreatment by human and dog alike. The concept of eat or be eaten has been so perfectly been ingrained into his
system, that he loses any speck of compassion or kindness that was ever in him and becomes a terrible killing machine. Whenever he sees he has the
advantage over another living thing, he exploits it and drops the creature dead in its tracks.
White Fang's reign of terror, however, only lasts until he encounters a stronger and more formidable foe. Weedon Scott, a mining expert during the
gold rush, narrowly saves him from the jaws of a pitbull and teaches him one final lesson. This is that

Analysis Of The Article ' Battle Of Hastings '
The article from Wikipedia called "Battle of Hastings" is about the historical Battle of Hastings, fought on October 14, 1066. Part of the Norman
conquest of England, it was between the Norman–French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo–Saxon King
Harold Godwinson. Taking place approximately 7 miles northwest of Hastings, East Sussex, England, it was a Norman victory. This significant
battle was fought due to the death of childless King Edward the Confessor which caused Harold to be crowned king shortly after King Edward's
death. However, Harold faced invasion of Duke William as Duke William "claimed he had been promised the throne by King Edward and that Harold

for Duke William and about 7,000 men for Harold. The battle ended with the death of Harold which had "led to the defeat and retreat of most of his
army" (Battle of Hastings, 2016). Many historians have their theories about the possible outcomes of the Battle of Hastings. One was Harold had to
"defend against almost two simultaneous invasions." Some historians will fault Harold for not gathering up enough, troops after the previous battle he
had in the previous month. Another reason Harold is blamed for the outcome, and loss of England, is because Duke William was a much more
experienced military leader than Harold. In the end, Harold's

Electronic Technology In Marshall Mcluhan's The Medium Is...
"The major advances in civilization are processes that all but wreck the societies in which they occur" (A.N Whitehead). Marshall Mcluhan, the
author of The Medium is the Massage, would agree to this and add that electronic technology is "reshaping and restructuring patterns of social
interdependence and every aspect of our personal life" (McLuhan, 8). He would argue that society has always been shaped by the medium of the
media affecting everything from government to family, leaving no part of us untouched. Using the alphabet for example, is a technology which is
absorbed at a very early age in a completely unaware manner. "Words and the meaning of words predispose the child to think and act automatically in
certain ways" (McLuhan, 8). McLuhan would add that electronic technology does this in the exact same way, as it encourages unification,
involvement, and commitment. As we grow to learn more about each other, "[w]e have become irrevocably involved with, and responsible for, each
other" (McLuhan, 24). If we don't conform McLuhan believes we will eventually enter into an "Age of Anxiety", where we "... do today's job with
yesterday's tools – with yesterday's concepts" (McLuhan, 9). This causes us to live in a rear view mirror society, and McLuhan says one must use
tools of the present to make sense of the present. George Orwell author of 1984 would have a lot to say about this particular topic for instance, "Who

The Pitiful Human Condition Exposed in Endgame, Dumbwaiter, and The Horse Dealer's Daughter
The three stories, The Endgame (Beckett), The Dumbwaiter (Pinter), and The Horse Dealer's Daughter (Lawrence) all deal with the themes of
repression, repetition, and breakdowns in communication. The stories show us the subjectivity of language and exemplify the complexities of the human
condition.
Samuel Beckett arrived on earth in Ireland on Good Friday, April 13, 1906. He then spent the rest of his life wanting to be somewhere else. Beckett's
life was one of silence, solitude, and depression. He felt he did not belong in this world and he was disenchanted with societal convention and the

The play premiered on April 3, 1957 at the Royal Court Theatre in London in French and was Beckett's second masterpiece.
Beckett's plays typically take place in one room – signifying a type of prison to its inhabitants. The characters endlessly repeat patterns of behavior
such as repetitive questions, looking out windows, and telling the same stories. These repetitions are symbolic of the inane repetitions that human
beings make every day – wake up, go to work, come home, go to sleep.
The absolute meaninglessness of this repetition is part of the human condition. The wait for death is unavoidable. The human being is born, lives, and
then dies. Beckett's point is that there is no meaning to life, he calls it 'absurd'. Beckett participated in "The Theater of the Absurd", which was a
French movement in the fifties' and wrote plays with this theme of 'nothingness'.
Influenced by Beckett and The Theater of the Absurd wasHarold Pinter. Important to understanding Pinter's plays is understanding the nature of
silence. Pinter "categorized speech as that which attempts to cover the nakedness of silence." In The Dumbwaiter, the dumb–waiter symbolizes a
disconnection in human communication. The two characters, Gus and Ben, are hit–men awaiting orders on who is their next victim. Their orders are
(presumably) finally sent down from the above floor via the dumb–waiter. The characters, like the

Article Critique Of Joshua Palkki
Article Critique of Joshua Palkki (2015) American music teachers need to understand and meet the needs of their Latino/a students, and Palkki (2015)
researches approaches that would aid music educators, specifically high school choir directors, in reaching and serving this population in his article "If
it fits into their Culture, then they will have a Connection: experiences of two Latina students in a select high school choir." Palkki (2015) presents a
qualitative case study regarding two Latina students in which Palkki (2015) seeks to learn about their choral experiences and thereby discover avenues
to improve choral teaching methods. A literature review is presented and after this the case study of these two students was explained... Show more

Following this strong introduction, Palkki moves the audience into his literature review.
Literature Review The literature review in this article was organized concisely and included research looking at different aspects in this gap of
understanding and education among choral teachers and Latino/a students. Palkki (2015) begins his literature review with a story from Lum and
Campbell (2009) and their study of a Latina student. Palkki (2015) uses his literature to convey the importance that choral teachers do need to examine
avenues for better serving their Latino/a population. After further establishing this point, the article moves on to show further research that music
education is not currently serving this group of students; furthermore, efforts regarding "multicultural music education" are not effectively reaching
students as teachers need to take a step further (Pallki 2015). Thus, Palkki (2015) comes to his final point in the literature review of "culturally relevant
music education" (Palkki, 2015, p. 4). Within this section, Palkki 2015 shows the importance of being culturally relevant and transitions into explaining
his case study. This literature review was thorough, well organized, and further established Palkki's point of researching music education and the Latino
/a population.
Case Study The case study of this article did an excellent job of helping the audience appreciate the challenges facing Latino/a

†The main reason for conservative dominance in the years...
'The main reason for conservative dominance in the years 1951 to 1964 was labour disunity' Assess the validity of this view. (June 2011)
Labour disunity was a huge contributing factor as to why the conservatives were able to dominate from 1951 to 1964. However, there are also other
factors that assisted conservative dominance. Whether that be conservative strengths, good timing, the end of austerity or their handle on public
opinion, all factors contributed to the dominant years. However, how long the conservatives actually dominated is also a question. Did they dominate
for the whole period, or just part of it? The years 1962–1964 question conservative dominance and how labour reunited.
One of the major reasons why Conservatives were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Failure to exploit opportunities was also another labour problem. The 1956 sued crisis provided labour with a great opportunity to get back on the
attack. If there had been a general election in 1957 then things may have favoured labour. However, Suez did not split the conservatives and labour
were left with few targets to aim at in hoping to gain more supporters. The Labour party's inability to counter conservative mistakes was a direct result
of their disunity.
As well as labour disunity there are other factors to consider as to why conservatives dominated. Firstly, the reorganisation of the party machine led by
Lord Woolton after the dislocation caused by the war and the shock defeat for the conservatives in 1946 proved pivotal for the conservatives in
improving their ideas (new conservatives with new ideas) and general organisation.
The conservatives recognised the extent of public approval for the legacy of the Attlee government. Most Conservatives grasped the political realities
of the time. There can be no outright rejection of the welfare state, nor a total reversal of nationalisation. Attitudes towards industry, the trade unions
and social policy were going to have to be very different from the 1930s because the experiences of the war years had made people far more ready to
accept the need for state intervention and planning. The post–war years had seen living standards rise, proving to be very popular

Harold Pinter died in 2008, Christmas eve at the age of 78 due to liver cancer.
Harold Pinter's work was influenced by Samuel Beckett who used silence to create different theatrical effects. Pinter's themes can be subtle but
effective, from the repetition of the newspaper and the disturbance of Ben and Gus's routine before going on the job. Pinter used this technique in
'The Dumb Waiter' and many other plays he has written but in this case the silence is filled with thoughts of violence. Ben and Gus who have to stay

The Rise of the Norman Empire
"Hold the wall!" shouted King Harold II as the Normans began to work their way past the Anglo–Saxon shield wall. The Anglo–Saxon empire reigned
over London for its fair share of time before William the Duke of Normandy decided to take it from them. William was the son of Robert I and his wife
was Matilda of Flanders. William was of Viking origin and he spoke French. King Harold II was ruler of London after King Harold I died. King Harold
II was the last Anglo–Saxon King of England. In the year 1066 a great battle took place that would change the way London lived forever. This battle

this road for sustaining his campaign and William wanted control of the only "proper" road to the Heart of England. The battle was not actually
fought in the town of Hastings but rather fought roughly seven miles away from the town. "The reason they called the Battle, the Battle of Hastings

To assess the Wilson Government which ran from the years 1964 to 1970 you have to look at what the Labour government promised to achieve if
they won the election in 1964. You have to look at what the changes the Wilson government brought forward in their time in office and how the
personalities of its politician's effects decisions made. The election campaign in 1964 was a close run contest even though there was a low public

Britain's economic failure. The Idea seemed a successful resolution as France was working on a more planned economy also and had much higher

that it wasn't planned prior to its introduction. As George Brown stated "I think it is a pity that we didn't produce a 'Blueprint' setting out precisely

How successful was Edward Heath as leader of the Conservative Party between 1965 and 1974?
Edward Heath led the conservative party through a difficult and revolutionary period in British politics from the years 1965 to 1974, punctuated by the
joining of the ECC in 1973, prolonged damaging strikes, high levels of inflation, and many monumental U–turns through the period of his office. The
concept of change is most notably seen right from the offset of his leadership as he was the first conservative leader to be elected democratically, by

Secondly, as Wilson faced crises in the failure of Trade Union reform and a stagnant economy, the Tories moved steadily to the right, many seeing this
as a successful move by Heath. The move to the right got a massive publicity boost in Selsdon Park Hotel at a shadow cabinet meeting (January 1970)
in the run–up to the election. In the public eye, the term 'Selsdon Man' (a phrase readily clutched by the media) meant a return to free enterprise
–which directly contrasted Wilson's policies of interventionism – the return to the values of hard work, trade union reform and a more efficient and
independent industry. These ideas, although not particularly revolutionary in terms of policy for Tories, in election year provided a real incentive to
frustrated voters, who looked at the struggling Wilson government whose interventionist policies were having little upswing effect on the economy.
Many see the conference as an end of consensus politics, and the start of a marathon political battle between the two leaders. The fact that the Tories
gained such publicity at Selsdon, and managed to convince the electorate that contrasting policies to the labour government such as the move to a more
free market economy was necessary, showed Heath to be a successful leader in the outset of his campaign.
Heath can be seen to be a successful leader due to the fact he won the 1970 election, much to Harold Wilson's surprise. However, many would place the

Essay on Tom in The Glass Menagerie
The Character of Tom in The Glass Menagerie
Tom Wingfield has a dual role in The Glass Menagerie. The first Tom is the narrator, who introduces his second self, the character. In his fifth
soliloquy, Tom the narrator indicates that time has detached him from the drama, "for time is the longest distance between two places" (Williams
1568). In the closing soliloquy Tom recounts how he lives and re–lives the story in his memory, though he is detached from the participants in the
original affair. Like his father, "a telephone man who fell in love with long distances," (Williams 1523), Tom has fallen in love with the long distance
that is time.

Tennessee Williams gives us no indication that Tom's escape from his father, Amanda, Laura, and Jim ever happens– what is most compelling about
the play is that Tom passes to the reader and the audience the responsibility of making meaning out of his life.
Although signs of Pater's aesthetic, poetic passion, can be found in this play, the premise of the action is phenomenological and the structure of the
argument is positivistic. Because Tom continues to experience the memory, again and again, his philosophic approach to understanding the grief and
guilt attached to his abandonment of his mother goes beyond Hegel's aim to that philosopher's idea of Concept: Tom refuses to accept the situation as
"the corpse which has left the tendency behind" (Kaufmann 10). In the play, Tom is able to relate his experience to the audience he has discovered,
"by a well–combined use of reasoning and observation, the actual laws of phenomena–that is to say, their invariable relations of succession and
likeness" (ComtГ© 2). He is able to express the logic and the laws of his situation (his field, memory); however, at the end of the play Tom has not
grasped the meaning locked within his own memory.
In remembering himself in relationship to his father, his mother, his sister and his best friend, Tom the narrator imbues the characters with the magic he
claims in his first soliloquy to possess. Although The

It didn't seem to affect Eisenhower, who had had a heart attack, or Dulles who suffered from cancer. Not to mention that Eden lived another twenty

The Suez Crisis and Sir Antony Eden
The Suez Crisis is often cited by some historians as one of the worst historical decisions that imprinted an indelible mark on the then British premier
Sir Antony Eden. More often than not the decision by Eden to invade Egypt following a disagreement about nationalization of the Suez Canal is often
cited as a the worst foreign policy decision that destroyed Eden political career and humiliated British empire in its wake. The decision by Eden to use
military force against Nasser is often viewed by many as arising from a personal grudge towards Nasser, while only a few defend the fact that Eden
had attempted to resolve the looming conflict peacefully.
A Brief Introduction about Sir Robert Antony Eden It is unfortunate that despite Sir Antony Eden having successfully served as Britain for three
decades as a foreign secretary and his subsequent rise to become the British prime minister in 1955 was overshadowed by the 1956 Suez Crisis that saw
him tender his resignation after serving approximately 18 months in office. While justifying this action, Eden cited that he was protecting British
commercial interests of which the recent nationalization of the Suez Canal by Nasser seemed to threaten. Eden strongly perceived Nasser as a dictator
and that his actions could easily be replicated with the actions of Hitler and Mussolini that subsequently ignited World War.
Born to a baronet in County Durham on 12 June 1987, Antony Eden was educated at Eton and oxford where he

To What Extent Was the Period of Conservative Rule 1951-64...
This essay will examine the impact of the Conservative party during their period in office between 1951 and 1964. The assessments by historians of
these thirteen years vary widely as the Conservative rule left behind a mixed feeling about its achievements. We will therefore be discussing to what
extent their period in office can be described as "thirteen years wasted", based on their performances in the political, economic and social sectors.
When the Conservative Party came to power in 1951, they won the election by a slim majority of 26 seats, leaving them with very little power to make
important changes. However, their number of seats increased throughout their thirteen years in office, leaving them with a majority of 107 in the 1959

The Dig for Victory campaign reminded people of the importance of agriculture.
The Conservatives also focused on several aspects of the social sector by putting into place important extensions to the Welfare State. These include
the increase of benefits and the implementation of the Mental Health Act which spread awareness of mental illness and increased its social
acceptance, which was a huge step towards tolerance which was ahead of its time. However the plan to build 90 new hospitals across Britain never
came into action as the Labour government had retaken office in 1964. Despite this, the improvements in healthcare can be seen as a big success for
the Conservatives, although, yet again it can be said that they could have done much more in their thirteen years in this sector.
Progress was also made in the area of education as 6000 new schools and 11 new universities were constructed and many more were expanded.
However their was a big debate about the merits of comprehensive and grammar schools. The Conservatives, who supported grammar schools for most
of their time in office finally gave into the inevitable fact that comprehensive education did offer certain advantages that grammar schools did not. The
time that the Conservatives spent preventing county councils from introducing comprehensive systems was therefore counter–productive and a waste
of time.

Value Of Studying History Essay
What is the value, if any, of studying history?
It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and predictions regarding the present and future based on the
mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund Burke stated as early as 1790 that "In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing the materials
of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind."1 However, in this essay I will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will
argue instead that the value of history is that it allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better understand ourselves as a
species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of the 2008 financial crisis in relation to the UK housing market, and the current
conflict in Afghanistan in relation to previous wars in that country.
The UK housing market has long been renowned for being "intrinsically volatile"2. As seen in the graph below, since the early 1970s it has
experienced four distinct periods of 'boom and bust ' which are marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3
This graph clearly shows that each "...bust followed an unsustainable credit–induced boom."4 Therefore I would argue that lessons from history have
not been learned in this case as the cycle of boom and bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum, despite
numerous economists5 and

Comparison Of Queen Elizabeth And Winston Churchill's Speech
Queen Elizabeth wrote an inspiring speech to the Troops who fought for the Armada about their honor and power over this astonishing war. Alongside,
Winston Churchill delivered a majestical yet powerful speech about the issue dealing with battle of Britain and the unifications needing to be healed.
Queen Elizabeth and Winston Churchill both delivered exhilarating speeches to their troops and counties with the battle of Britain. The Queen
delivers her speech to the courageous group of men and women who fought this rigid, enduring war. While Winston delivers his speech to the
House of Commons. While analyzing and juxtaposing these two speeches and their contrastive audiences; it is very mere to see the compelling
diction, dynamic emotion used in their speeches. Queen Elizabeth uses the woman like senses in her to make her speech to be emotional yet
uplifting. In regards she uses the phrase, "I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman". She ultimately uses this parlance to employ her
bodyful actions, to use this as a defense yet comfort to these valiant, assiduous soldiers. Elizabeth uses her gender to scheme her words to her

Race and Loyalty in Othello Essay
Race and Loyalty in Othello
William Shakespeare`s Othello is centralized around the conflicts that are, for the most part, tied in with racial issues and questions of loyalty. These
conflicts stem from the society that encompass the couple, as well as from the couple themselves. Indeed the couple are entrenched in different social
strata, class and ethnicity. The female protagonist is the daughter of a highly–respected Venetian senator: Brabantio.Othello––also known as the Moor
––is a foreigner, black in color, has a past filled with tragic and exotic tales and has proved himself worthy of the title General in the Venetian army.

The phrase "look to her" suggests several things: that Desdemona needs to be watched closely, in other words; she cannot be trusted, or that Othello
should notice what a deceiver looks like and lastly, if Othello looks at her he may find that she is not as fair as he thought––the opposite of fair being
black.
It can be perhaps argued that Desdemona has actively sought to alienate herself from the other Venetians by marrying him. Othello, on the other hand,
seems to be more than anxious to conform to Venetian ideals. By adding "Moor" rather than a name or his position Brabantio emphasizes Othello`s
difference, solely based on the colour of his skin. Brabantio continues this by dehumanizing Othello, by taking away his name, his individuality and in
so doing makes Othello acutely aware of his difference as well as well as making him believe that notion that he is a barbarian.
When he says "if thou hast eyes to see" he is attempting to allude to the idea that in order to see what Brabantio sees i.e. Desdemona`s marriage as a
betrayal he must see the whole situation through Venetian point of view. However it could also be attempting to reflect Brabantio`s assumption that
only if he is totally blinded by love he will fail to see what Desdemona really is. The rhyming couplet also serves as attempting to reiterate the
aforementioned.
"My life upon her faith" (I.iii.295)
The above is Othello`s reassuring

Jack London Figurative Language
The first few chapters of White Fang were very detailed because Jack London used great figurative language and had good choice of words to

their white covering of frost, and they seemed to lean toward each other, black and ominous, in the fading light" (London 1) which is a great example of
Jack London being really detailed. Also these first few chapters had a lot of figurative language and metaphors. Having figurative language and

setting helps the reader because the reader would know where the characters are at and the time the story takes place in; also being detailed in the
setting is important because if the reader doesn't know what a forest is it kind of gives them a feel of what a forest is like. The book also states,
"The unrest of the dogs had been increasing, and they stampeded, in a surge of sudden fear, to the near side of the fire, cringing and crawling about
the legs of the men. In the scramble one of the dogs had yelped with pain and fright as the smell of its singed coat possessed the air" (London 7).
This quote is another example of why being really detailed is important because it adds more intensity to action scenes so it gets the reader at the
edge of their sits. It's important to have the reader at the edge of their sits so the author can keep the reader interested into the book and keep their
minds thinking of what might happen next. These are some reasons why Jack London is very detailed in these first few

We Shall Fight On The Beaches
In Winston Churchill's speech, 'We Shall Fight On the Beaches' he presents a powerful call to action directly to the British House of Commons in the
year of 1940 on the forth of June. Winston uses the techniques of figurative language to capture his audience's attention in a way they could
understand the importance of his message, without disregarding his high level of intellect. In order for one to truly understand Churchill's message
one must understand the difficult task he was coined with prior to delivering this powerful message. Through the use of logos Winston provides us
with the necessary background information to inform the listeners that prior to delivering the speech the British military suffered a great loss in both
France and Belgium. In great detail he speaks on the events that have occurred leading up to him speaking, giving both us now and the then listener a
better understanding of what he stands for and is fighting for. His use of logos makes the speech more reliable and comforts the audience because it
informs them that Churchill knows what he is talking about. In his speech he announced to the public that he knew it was going to be hard to
announce and speak on the greatest military disaster in the history of Britain. His ability to be sensitive and honest in his challenges creates a powerful
bond between his message and the audience. His use of rhetoric helped bring about a final victory after all the disasters caused by the Nazis. Churchill

Marshall Mcluhan 's Theory Of Hot And Cold
Marshall McLuhan's theory of "hot" vs. "cool" classified media into two groups and took into consideration extensive understandings of how the
media interacts with audience and catoragized them based of an extensive list. Although McLuhan gives an excellent theory of hot vs cold media,
time has shown how a hot media has the power of transforming into a cold media and vise verse. In his essay, "Media Hot and Cold," McLuhan
identified film as a very hot media and the internet as a very cool media, yet these media's have transcended these barriers due technology
improvements, cultural movements and other factors which played a key role in aiding these transformations. The advancements in the field of
technology evolved films in ways which increased interaction, personalization, and content for viewers of all ages. Film was always classified as such
a hot medium because it "excludes" the viewer and does not "include" them with the content that is being presented. Yet this form of interaction and
participation has changed dramatically since now people no longer sit in their seats like brainwashed zombies. Once theaters introduced 3–D viewing
and seats that stimulated further senses, audiences interaction increased immensely because they now could feel as a whole the same feelings that their
neighbor and the actors were experiencing. As the years went by instead of detribalizing, film beholds the power to bring people together and unite
them. Instead of extending space, movies

Music Hall Monologue Menace
Here Ben makes a serious situation look light and absurd. Majority of the audiences would side with Ben and laugh at the old man's stupidity and the
resultant death whereas a few like Gus would be shocked and consider it to be the fault of someone else (Who advised him to do a thing like that?)
instead of the old man and sympathize with the old man.
In addition to all these, Pinter has made use of the music hall monologue to capture the audience's attention and create a ludicrous ambience. An apt
illustration of the music hall monologue is Mick's monologue in Act II of the play "The Caretaker". Mick tells that his uncle's brother was a spitting
image of Davies. He moved from one place to another like Davies, led a carefree life till he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One such non–conformist is Stanley Webber in theplay "The Birthday party" who leads a quiet life in a boarding house near the sea. What crime or
wrong act he had committed against the organization is unrevealed in the play. But at the end of the play we find that he is forced to leave the
boarding house with two representatives of the sinister organization so that he can atone for his sins. Likewise in the play "The Dumb Waiter", the
organization turns out to be a source of menace for Gus in the play when he becomes the target of the next murder assignment assigned to them by the
organization. In the play Pinter does not reveal what caused the organization to order Ben to kill his partner in crime, Gus. But it can be assumed that
Gus had started asking too many questions about how the organization worked and so on and this may have agitated the rulers/administrators of the
organization and they order his execution to keep their ominous intentions and acts a secret.
b) Strangers/intruders: In many of his plays, Pinter has used strangers as agents of menace who disrupt the comfortable and supposedly happy lives of
the inmates of a room or a house. Since the identity and the intentions of the strangers is a mystery, an atmosphere of tension, suspense and fear is built
up and the inmates of the room try, though unsuccessfully, to bar the menace from entering their rooms and their lives. In the play "The Birthday Party"

Contrasting Theories On The Extinction Of Dinosaurs Essay...

  • 1. Contrasting Theories on the Extinction of Dinosaurs Essay... So what killed the dinosaurs? Without having any background education in science it is hard for the general public to comprehend such matters and they rely on the knowledge of the scientists in this field. Although there has been much research on the subject nobody has come up with a conclusive answer. And we are left to read the countless articles, all having their own opinions as to themass extinction. One such theory is that a shift in the solar system could have caused the mass destruction. According to an article published in Nature magazine, "A bizarre wobble 65 million years ago, perturbing the orbits of Mars, Earth and Mercury, may have caused the demise of the dinosaurs, new models of the Solar System suggest." The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this article other ideas are mentioned about what came after the meteorite hit, "Some have proposed that this hot debris would have ignited vegetation wherever it fell to earth. Others believe a gigantic fireball, rising over Chicxulub, would have spread hot material over the planet." This researcher proposes that the dinosaurs did not die of heat, in fact she thinks the opposite, that they froze to death instead. Both articles have the same idea about a meteorite hitting the earth yet there is no concrete evidence as to what caused the meteorite to strike and what it did when it got here. Illustrated in an article, also featured in Nature magazine, is the competition between scientists to find any knowledge leading to an answer and their differing views on the subject. Again the theory of debris blocking sunlight and stopping photosynthesis is brought up but it is apparent that it is only one view in a sea of many. "A minority disputes this theory, arguing that other events–such as volcanic eruptions, sea–level changes or a series of impacts–were to blame for the spectacular loss of species that occurred at the transition between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods..." The article explains the consequences of their efforts to drill into the Chicxulub crater in Mexico, the site where the asteroid supposedly struck. There was a lot of arguments as to which scientist would take the core section to analyze. In the end

  • 3. The Take Over Of The Children The Take–Over of the Children Are you a literary festival virgin? Are you clueless about what to wear and expect? Have no fear, I am here to help. I too was a lit–fest–virgin until recently when I unexpectedly embarked upon something that has made me look at literature differently. I'm a student at Newman University in Birmingham and honestly, when I heard the words 'literary festival' my heart sank to somewhere not appropriate to mention (it begins with 'b' and ends in 'um'). I panicked before the events, on my first event, I didn't know what to wear. Did I go classy and middle–class or put on my best Miss Moneypenny glasses and borrow my Nan's cardigan? Really, I was so flustered trying to get into Birmingham city centre (which took an hour) that when I arrived my jacket was screwed up in my bag and my hair was mostly in my mouth. So instead I just went with big fluffy comfort clothes and my paper and pen. Turns out, that you can wear what you like. So that is exactly what I did for the rest of my time. "The Cardigan Brigade" When I think of literary festivals and the kinds of people they attract my mind automatically thinks of 'the cardigan brigade', middle–class men and women fawning over books while sipping wine and talking about the deep workings of the books sub–plot and other bullshit. When I got there, my ideas of festival–goers were completely blown out of the water. Since it was my first time at a festival, I went all in and bought a festival pass so that I could ... • 4. Harold PinterВґs Among the Hidden and the Theme of Propaganda "It's so easy for propaganda to work, and dissent to be mocked," believes Harold Pinter, Nobel Prize–winning English playwright, screenwriter, director and actor. Various propaganda from the totalitarian government of Among the Hidden will affect citizens, baron or farmer. Either way, there will be attempts to voice other sides of the story. Thegovernment is spreading lies about the population police; their deceptive ways will change citizen's lives. Luke is the third child of a farmer's family, and propaganda deeply interfered with his life. Ever since he was a toddler, he was obliged to a strict set of rules from his paranoid parents. "Then they started running all that on TV about the Population Police, how the Population Police had ways of finding out everything, how they'd do anything to enforce the law... And your dad started hearing rumors in town, about other babies..." (10–11) Luke's mother replied to his questioning. His mother was telling him about the government's propaganda, the propaganda they had believed. Luke's parents fell right into the government's trap of lies. Therefore, Luke was forbidden from watching TV, using the computer, or calling someone on the phone, blocking him from the outside world. Being a farmer's third child practically meant Luke was clueless when it came to real life. The doctrines of the government changed Luke's life. Barons were impacted, in a distinct way. "They say. But everybody knows the Government's not that competent," ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Secret Compartment Of The Room Nightburn closed the journal and replaced it in the secret compartment in his desk. He would read more later, but for now he was weary from all the apportation he had performed that day. He pushed his chair back, stood up and walked out onto the balcony. It was late evening and he hadn't eaten all day and decided he should make an appearance to avoid undue suspicion even if it was late. Washing up, he changed into his usual attire and left his room for the dining hall. Voices drifted down the corridor as he approached the room, although he found most of the tables unoccupied except one near the door where a few members of his personal guard sat and his own. Sara, Balthazar, Kane and Faine sat conversing as he walked over to join ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Balthazar informed him of his plans to be away for the next few weeks checking on the affairs of other order members as he felt it would assist them with future plans if he knew how the other members viewed Nightburn's return. Nodding as he ate, the others soon joined in the conversation with some minor matters that had occurred during recruitment of new troops. Even though the servants cleared the table, they still sat for some time finishing their glasses of wine and talking about this and that, nothing of real concern. Relieved that no one had commented on his late arrival, he yawned, only then realizing how truly tired he had become and excused himself and retired to his room, finding a bath drawn with clean towels and the bedding changed. He truly appreciated his service staff at that moment. Stripping off his clothes, he stepped into the bathtub, but took only the time to bathe himself because the bed was so appealing. Having scrubbed off all the dirt from the day, he stepped out, dried himself with the towels left by the servant, dressed in his bed attire, and plopped his tired body into bed. When his head hit the pillow, he was fast asleep. The next morning, Nightburn awoke, eager to find the hidden room, he had read about in his father's journal, and dressed quickly. Although early, the guards would be changing shifts soon making it easier to get to the north wing unseen. He stepped into the north wing library ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Stranger Than Fiction Sequence #1 Stranger Than Fiction's opening sequence is a single sequence shot, where the camera is flying in from space towards the earth, continuing down over a city, flying by building with a low frequency "Whoosh", through buildings via open windows, and coming to a stop inside a darkened room, centered on a wrist watch with a fluorescent blue display. A voice over begins and says "This is the story ofHarold Crick, and his wrist watch", (Voice over by Karen Eiffel, played by Emma Thompson). The sequence continues showing a typical mundane day for Harold Crick, (Played by Will Farrell), a Senior Agent for the Internal Revenue Service, and concludes showing Harold going to bed, then it cuts to show a man giving his son a bicycle as a gift, and a young woman searching the classified ads for a job. Throughout the sequence the voice over describes the way Harold approaches life. Illustrating his peculiarities are "Document like Graphics" interlaced with Harold on the screen, highlighting Harold's affinity for documented facts and figures, and the voice over occasionally interjects thoughts from Harold's watch. This concert took place on May 4th at 7:30 PM.The director of this choir is Ken Rawdon, and he has been teaching the choirs at Mount Eden High School for a long time. This choir is a high school choir, and they are one of the best choirs in the state. They even have gotten 1st place at Golden State numerous times! This concert was a very enjoyable concert, and it was filled with a variety of music; all the pieces were very interesting and well–sung. The choices of songs that were sung throughout the concert were mostly religious, and all of them had some cool sounds that the singers made by themselves. When the women's' parts came in, the notes had a tendency to be really high, which put more power into the song that they were singing. Many of the songs were in a variety of languages, and they were also very difficult to sing, musically. The appearance of the Mount EdenHigh School Concert Choir was very professional. If the percussion was heard more clearly, the song would have been more meaningful. It also would have sounded better, with the fast words and all. • 9. Film Analysis : The Twelve Angry Men "Don't judge so you shall not be judged" (Luke 6:37), is a famous proverb quote that many people go by. But why is it that people judge? Or assume that someone is already guilty of a crime based on their race, skin color, economic status or family background? If someone has to make a judgment, he has to be certain of the facts surrounding the situation. Sentencing a person to die is a very crucial decision and the same reason goes into setting a guilty person free. Everybody deserves a fair and thorough trial. Judging a person according to someone else's standards is not fair. In the 1957 Sydney Lumet film, The Twelve Angry Men, 12 jurors decided the fate of an 18–year boy, who was accused of killing his own father. The situation gradually transitioned from conflicting to agreeable and jurors' characters changed from vindictive to considerate. The movie circled around the arguments on how people take a decision on innocence versus guilt in our democratic society. The increasing angst among the men was due to their different family backgrounds, personal differences, and the extremely inconvenient environment they are in. What made the movie more interesting was the jurors' family background was so diverse. Putting them all together in one room can be difficult and explosive. The unique personalities of the characters added more drama into scenes and the whole movie would have been awfully dull if not for the strong and persuasive dialogues and remarks they threw at each other. Jurors number 3, 10 and 7 were the most critical and mean. Anyone can say that they grew up in a harsh environment with authoritarian parents. They were the men who made very demeaning remarks and made a direct attack on the boy's personality. If jurors based their judgment on personal predispositions and prejudices, anybody who is on trial will not stand a chance of a fair hearing. Of course, it is impossible to have all the jurors come with the same family backgrounds. That is the whole point of the jury; to remove any form of bias towards the accused and by looking through the facts and not just relying on the evidence provided by the unreliable witnesses, which could only be circumstantial. • 10. The Importance Of Referent Power In Music The power to influence people to do something depends on the knowledge I have concerning the thing and this type of power is called expert power (Hughes, Ginnett, &Curphy, 2015). For example, as the choir director of my church back in Ghana, I have a lot of influence on the choir members as individuals and the choir as a whole because of my knowledge and experience in music. The knowledge and experience I have in music wields me more power even over anyone I meet for the first time doing music. As a result, I influence the songs we sing at church, the commitment level of the members and decision–making processes towards the choir's development. Referent power is the power that people have over followers because of the relationship between them (Hughes, et al, 2015). I have a low level in referent power at the beginning of my relationship with people around me and even at work because of my personality. I am an introvert and it takes a long time for me to get attached to people around me. For example, when I was working with one of the universities back in Ghana as the administrative assistant to the liaison officer of the university, it took about three months for me to get closer to the secretary. Based on the theory of referent power, the secretary has traits of a referent power. This is because of the strong relationship that developed between us after I got acquainted to her. Rhetorical Analysis Of Harold Pinter 's ' The Room ' INTRODUCTION I'm convinced that what happens in my plays could happen anywhere, at any time, in any place, although the events may seem unfamiliar at first glance. If you press me for a definition, I'd say that what goes in my plays is realistic, but what I'm doing is not realism" (Pinter, Harold Pinter: Plays, 2 ix) Widely acknowledged as one of the great post–war generation dramatists, Harold Pinter's fame rests on not only his popular dramas but also on his political activism which is rooted in his concern for people and their condition in realms which can be termed as social, professional or political. In fact it can be said that many of his works starting from the early comedies of menace to the later overtly political plays run ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This triggers an interrogation as to what prompts Pinter to withhold information from the audience or to rely on ambiguity. The answer is the illusionary nature of truth. Truth to one can be a lie to another and to present something as "fact" is highly questionable, owing to the suspicion which others may have with regard to its authenticity. As Pinter knew that the only thing that can be termed as close to truth is not the cause but the effects of an action as seen through the naked eye of an impartial witness, his plays abound in ambiguity regarding the motivations of the characters but clarity in the depiction of characters' acts of violence and the effect of it on their victims. On a metaphorical level, the reason why Pinter refrains from revealing his characters' identity and motivations is that he wants the characters' acts of violence or suffering not to be localized or restricted to a particular country, state, group or clan. Instead he wants the aggressors' acts of violence and the victims' suffering to symbolize the despotic acts of all tyrannical rulers or state and suffering of all abjected or oppressed people in this world consecutively. His plays are a manifestation of the idea that violence is a universal reality and all acts of violence in the society such as direct, structural and cultural violence are pathologies or ... This long speech, found in lines 149 to 196, shows Othello for the first time as a person with depth and less as a soldier. This speech is important to the book as a whole because it is a testimony to the strength of the love between Othello and Desdemona, which will later play a major role in the plot. It is also one of the first times that we see Othello trying to influence his audience with his words. The Power of the Family in White Noise Essay examples The Power of the Family in White Noise Don Dellilo's protagonist in his novel "White Noise," Jack Gladney, has a "nuclear family" that is, ostensibly, a prime example of the disjointed nature way of the "family" of the 80's and 90's –– what with Jack's multiple past marriages and the fact that his children aren't all related. It's basically the antipodal image of the 1950's "nuclear family." Despite this surface–level disjointedness, it is his family and the "extrasensory rapport" that he shares with them allows Jack to survive in his world. Murray, Jack's friend, argues that "The family is strongest where objective reality is most likely to be misinterpreted" (82). Heinrich, Jack's son, explicates this notion in his constant ... So in recounting "the smell of panties" etc., and viewing such encounters with either "irony, sympathy and fond amusement," Jack is able not only to affirm the present and escape the past, but accomplishes something much larger: namely the ability to affirm the "realness" of such feelings. Thus the family, in this instance Babette, serves as the medium through which Jack is able to overcome Heinrich's skepticism (which is representative of modern "science" (24)) as to the "reality" of human emotions. DeLillo's image, moreover, of Jack and Babette "rescuing" themselves "from the past" also suggests that without family or someone to commune with, man can become lost in the past. DeLillo's novel is almost obsessively concerned with appliances: TVs, radios, microwaves etc. They are omnipresent, not only in the characters worlds but within the narrative itself. DeLillo repeatedly interrupts his narrative with sentences like "The TV said: And other trends that could dramatically impact our portfolio" (61) or "MasterCard, Visa, American Express" (100) or "That chirping sound was just the radiator" (94). Just as Jack's world is one suffused with such objects, so too is the narrative, a technique which DeLillo uses to force the reader into Jack Gladney's world. • 21. Analysis Of The Article ' Battle Of Hastings ' The article from Wikipedia called "Battle of Hastings" is about the historical Battle of Hastings, fought on October 14, 1066. Part of the Norman conquest of England, it was between the Norman–French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo–Saxon King Harold Godwinson. Taking place approximately 7 miles northwest of Hastings, East Sussex, England, it was a Norman victory. This significant battle was fought due to the death of childless King Edward the Confessor which caused Harold to be crowned king shortly after King Edward's death. However, Harold faced invasion of Duke William as Duke William "claimed he had been promised the throne by King Edward and that Harold had sworn to this agreement" (Battle of Hastings, 2016). The battle lasted from about 9 a.m. to dusk, with estimates of around 10,000 men fighting for Duke William and about 7,000 men for Harold. The battle ended with the death of Harold which had "led to the defeat and retreat of most of his army" (Battle of Hastings, 2016). Many historians have their theories about the possible outcomes of the Battle of Hastings. One was Harold had to "defend against almost two simultaneous invasions." Some historians will fault Harold for not gathering up enough, troops after the previous battle he had in the previous month. Another reason Harold is blamed for the outcome, and loss of England, is because Duke William was a much more experienced military leader than Harold. In the end, Harold's ... Marshall Mcluhan, the author of The Medium is the Massage, would agree to this and add that electronic technology is "reshaping and restructuring patterns of social interdependence and every aspect of our personal life" (McLuhan, 8). He would argue that society has always been shaped by the medium of the media affecting everything from government to family, leaving no part of us untouched. Using the alphabet for example, is a technology which is absorbed at a very early age in a completely unaware manner. "Words and the meaning of words predispose the child to think and act automatically in certain ways" (McLuhan, 8). McLuhan would add that electronic technology does this in the exact same way, as it encourages unification, involvement, and commitment. This causes us to live in a rear view mirror society, and McLuhan says one must use tools of the present to make sense of the present. Beckett's plays typically take place in one room – signifying a type of prison to its inhabitants. These repetitions are symbolic of the inane repetitions that human beings make every day – wake up, go to work, come home, go to sleep. The absolute meaninglessness of this repetition is part of the human condition. The wait for death is unavoidable. The human being is born, lives, and then dies. Beckett's point is that there is no meaning to life, he calls it 'absurd'. Beckett participated in "The Theater of the Absurd", which was a French movement in the fifties' and wrote plays with this theme of 'nothingness'. Palkki (2015) uses his literature to convey the importance that choral teachers do need to examine avenues for better serving their Latino/a population. The Labour party's inability to counter conservative mistakes was a direct result of their disunity. As well as labour disunity there are other factors to consider as to why conservatives dominated. Firstly, the reorganisation of the party machine led by Lord Woolton after the dislocation caused by the war and the shock defeat for the conservatives in 1946 proved pivotal for the conservatives in improving their ideas (new conservatives with new ideas) and general organisation. The conservatives recognised the extent of public approval for the legacy of the Attlee government. Most Conservatives grasped the political realities of the time. There can be no outright rejection of the welfare state, nor a total reversal of nationalisation. Attitudes towards industry, the trade unions and social policy were going to have to be very different from the 1930s because the experiences of the war years had made people far more ready to accept the need for state intervention and planning. The post–war years had seen living standards rise, proving to be very popular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pinter's themes can be subtle but effective, from the repetition of the newspaper and the disturbance of Ben and Gus's routine before going on the job. Pinter used this technique in 'The Dumb Waiter' and many other plays he has written but in this case the silence is filled with thoughts of violence. The Anglo–Saxon empire reigned over London for its fair share of time before William the Duke of Normandy decided to take it from them. William was the son of Robert I and his wife was Matilda of Flanders. William was of Viking origin and he spoke French. King Harold II was ruler of London after King Harold I died. King Harold II was the last Anglo–Saxon King of England. In the year 1066 a great battle took place that would change the way London lived forever. This battle was called The Battle of Hastings. The battle was not actually fought in the town of Hastings but rather fought roughly seven miles away from the town. "The reason they called the Battle, the Battle of Hastings was because back in the middle ages era battle was important. The people of 1066 agreed that battle was "wealthy." Assess the extent to which the Wilson Government achieved its objectives by 1970 To assess the Wilson Government which ran from the years 1964 to 1970 you have to look at what the Labour government promised to achieve if they won the election in 1964. You have to look at what the changes the Wilson government brought forward in their time in office and how the personalities of its politician's effects decisions made. The election campaign in 1964 was a close run contest even though there was a low public approval of the current Prime Minister Alec Douglas–Home. The labour party only won a majority of 3 seats. The Idea seemed a successful resolution as France was working on a more planned economy also and had much higher GDP growth rate. However the reality showed that the government failed in its objectives. Ironically the problem of this "Super Department" was that it wasn't planned prior to its introduction. As George Brown stated "I think it is a pity that we didn't produce a 'Blueprint' setting out precisely what we wanted to achieve". The treasury also went out of its own way to make the work of the new department fail, reports suggested that Brown's phone was bugged to allow the Treasury to keep track of the dealings he made and the dealings of the office. Even though these difficulties Brown still produced the 'National Plan' which aimed at the economic targets set out in the General Election of 1964. Edward Heath led the conservative party through a difficult and revolutionary period in British politics from the years 1965 to 1974, punctuated by the joining of the ECC in 1973, prolonged damaging strikes, high levels of inflation, and many monumental U–turns through the period of his office. The concept of change is most notably seen right from the offset of his leadership as he was the first conservative leader to be elected democratically, by ballot, marking a turning away from the old boy network of Tory prime ministers preceding him. Secondly, as Wilson faced crises in the failure of Trade Union reform and a stagnant economy, the Tories moved steadily to the right, many seeing this as a successful move by Heath. The move to the right got a massive publicity boost in Selsdon Park Hotel at a shadow cabinet meeting (January 1970) in the run–up to the election. In the public eye, the term 'Selsdon Man' (a phrase readily clutched by the media) meant a return to free enterprise –which directly contrasted Wilson's policies of interventionism – the return to the values of hard work, trade union reform and a more efficient and independent industry. These ideas, although not particularly revolutionary in terms of policy for Tories, in election year provided a real incentive to frustrated voters, who looked at the struggling Wilson government whose interventionist policies were having little upswing effect on the economy. Many see the conference as an end of consensus politics, and the start of a marathon political battle between the two leaders. The fact that the Tories gained such publicity at Selsdon, and managed to convince the electorate that contrasting policies to the labour government such as the move to a more free market economy was necessary, showed Heath to be a successful leader in the outset of his campaign. Tennessee Williams gives us no indication that Tom's escape from his father, Amanda, Laura, and Jim ever happens– what is most compelling about the play is that Tom passes to the reader and the audience the responsibility of making meaning out of his life. Although signs of Pater's aesthetic, poetic passion, can be found in this play, the premise of the action is phenomenological and the structure of the argument is positivistic. Because Tom continues to experience the memory, again and again, his philosophic approach to understanding the grief and guilt attached to his abandonment of his mother goes beyond Hegel's aim to that philosopher's idea of Concept: Tom refuses to accept the situation as "the corpse which has left the tendency behind" (Kaufmann 10). In the play, Tom is able to relate his experience to the audience he has discovered, "by a well–combined use of reasoning and observation, the actual laws of phenomena–that is to say, their invariable relations of succession and likeness" (ComtГ© 2). He is able to express the logic and the laws of his situation (his field, memory); however, at the end of the play Tom has not grasped the meaning locked within his own memory. The Suez Crisis and Sir Antony Eden The Suez Crisis is often cited by some historians as one of the worst historical decisions that imprinted an indelible mark on the then British premier Sir Antony Eden. More often than not the decision by Eden to invade Egypt following a disagreement about nationalization of the Suez Canal is often cited as a the worst foreign policy decision that destroyed Eden political career and humiliated British empire in its wake. The decision by Eden to use military force against Nasser is often viewed by many as arising from a personal grudge towards Nasser, while only a few defend the fact that Eden had attempted to resolve the looming conflict peacefully. A Brief Introduction about Sir Robert Antony Eden It is unfortunate that despite Sir Antony Eden having successfully served as Britain for three decades as a foreign secretary and his subsequent rise to become the British prime minister in 1955 was overshadowed by the 1956 Suez Crisis that saw him tender his resignation after serving approximately 18 months in office. While justifying this action, Eden cited that he was protecting British commercial interests of which the recent nationalization of the Suez Canal by Nasser seemed to threaten. Eden strongly perceived Nasser as a dictator and that his actions could easily be replicated with the actions of Hitler and Mussolini that subsequently ignited World War. The assessments by historians of these thirteen years vary widely as the Conservative rule left behind a mixed feeling about its achievements. We will therefore be discussing to what extent their period in office can be described as "thirteen years wasted", based on their performances in the political, economic and social sectors. When the Conservative Party came to power in 1951, they won the election by a slim majority of 26 seats, leaving them with very little power to make important changes. However, their number of seats increased throughout their thirteen years in office, leaving them with a majority of 107 in the 1959 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Dig for Victory campaign reminded people of the importance of agriculture. The Conservatives also focused on several aspects of the social sector by putting into place important extensions to the Welfare State. These include the increase of benefits and the implementation of the Mental Health Act which spread awareness of mental illness and increased its social acceptance, which was a huge step towards tolerance which was ahead of its time. However the plan to build 90 new hospitals across Britain never came into action as the Labour government had retaken office in 1964. Despite this, the improvements in healthcare can be seen as a big success for the Conservatives, although, yet again it can be said that they could have done much more in their thirteen years in this sector. Progress was also made in the area of education as 6000 new schools and 11 new universities were constructed and many more were expanded. However their was a big debate about the merits of comprehensive and grammar schools. The Conservatives, who supported grammar schools for most of their time in office finally gave into the inevitable fact that comprehensive education did offer certain advantages that grammar schools did not. The time that the Conservatives spent preventing county councils from introducing comprehensive systems was therefore counter–productive and a waste of time. Last but not ... • 36. Value Of Studying History Essay What is the value, if any, of studying history? It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and predictions regarding the present and future based on the mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund Burke stated as early as 1790 that "In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing the materials of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind."1 However, in this essay I will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will argue instead that the value of history is that it allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better understand ourselves as a species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of the 2008 financial crisis in relation to the UK housing market, and the current conflict in Afghanistan in relation to previous wars in that country. The UK housing market has long been renowned for being "intrinsically volatile"2. As seen in the graph below, since the early 1970s it has experienced four distinct periods of 'boom and bust ' which are marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3 This graph clearly shows that each "...bust followed an unsustainable credit–induced boom."4 Therefore I would argue that lessons from history have not been learned in this case as the cycle of boom and bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum, despite numerous economists5 and ... The female protagonist is the daughter of a highly–respected Venetian senator: Brabantio.Othello––also known as the Moor ––is a foreigner, black in color, has a past filled with tragic and exotic tales and has proved himself worthy of the title General in the Venetian army. The phrase "look to her" suggests several things: that Desdemona needs to be watched closely, in other words; she cannot be trusted, or that Othello should notice what a deceiver looks like and lastly, if Othello looks at her he may find that she is not as fair as he thought––the opposite of fair being black. It can be perhaps argued that Desdemona has actively sought to alienate herself from the other Venetians by marrying him. Othello, on the other hand, seems to be more than anxious to conform to Venetian ideals. By adding "Moor" rather than a name or his position Brabantio emphasizes Othello`s difference, solely based on the colour of his skin. Brabantio continues this by dehumanizing Othello, by taking away his name, his individuality and in so doing makes Othello acutely aware of his difference as well as well as making him believe that notion that he is a barbarian. When he says "if thou hast eyes to see" he is attempting to allude to the idea that in order to see what Brabantio sees i.e. Desdemona`s marriage as a betrayal he must see the whole situation through Venetian point of view. However it could also be attempting to reflect Brabantio`s assumption that only if he is totally blinded by love he will fail to see what Desdemona really is. The rhyming couplet also serves as attempting to reiterate the aforementioned. "My life upon her faith" (I.iii.295) The above is Othello`s reassuring

Winston uses the techniques of figurative language to capture his audience's attention in a way they could understand the importance of his message, without disregarding his high level of intellect. In order for one to truly understand Churchill's message one must understand the difficult task he was coined with prior to delivering this powerful message. Through the use of logos Winston provides us with the necessary background information to inform the listeners that prior to delivering the speech the British military suffered a great loss in both France and Belgium. In great detail he speaks on the events that have occurred leading up to him speaking, giving both us now and the then listener a better understanding of what he stands for and is fighting for. Although McLuhan gives an excellent theory of hot vs cold media, time has shown how a hot media has the power of transforming into a cold media and vise verse. In his essay, "Media Hot and Cold," McLuhan identified film as a very hot media and the internet as a very cool media, yet these media's have transcended these barriers due technology improvements, cultural movements and other factors which played a key role in aiding these transformations. The advancements in the field of technology evolved films in ways which increased interaction, personalization, and content for viewers of all ages. Film was always classified as such a hot medium because it "excludes" the viewer and does not "include" them with the content that is being presented. Yet this form of interaction and participation has changed dramatically since now people no longer sit in their seats like brainwashed zombies. Once theaters introduced 3–D viewing and seats that stimulated further senses, audiences interaction increased immensely because they now could feel as a whole the same feelings that their neighbor and the actors were experiencing.
