THE CHALLENGE: Today, millions of low-income children in India do not have access to the same quality of education as their wealthier
peers. As a result, more than one in three students will drop out of primary school before the fifth standard.
THE MOVEMENT: Teach For India is a nationwide movement that aims to end this educational inequity by creating a powerful force of
Leaders in many sectors who will advocate for educational opportunity for all children.
Teach For India: Theory of Change
In the short-run, Teach For India will act as a source of dedicated, quality teachers who will help students achieve significant
academic gains. In the long run, Teach For India believes that it will take a large movement of leaders to create sustainable
educational reform in the country. Therefore, by placing large numbers of highly qualified teachers in low-income schools,
Teach For India will create a growing force of alumni, who transformed by their experiences in the classroom, will work toward
creating change in the education sector in India.
Teach For India Fellowship
The Teach For India Fellowship is a two-year paid assignment during which Fellows are placed as full-time teachers in low
income English Medium schools in Mumbai and Pune. In the second year of their fellowship, Fellows plan and implement a
school-wide project to address one major obstacle to learning in their community.
The Teach For India Model
The Teach For India model involves the following components:
· Recruiting the highest quality university graduates and young professionals through a rigorous selection process
· Providing Fellows with intensive training and leadership development prior to and during the fellowship
· Placing Fellows to teach full-time for two-years in under resourced schools
· Building partnerships to ensure Fellows have a clear pathway to leadership after the fellowship
· Setting up systems to drive short-term impact on student achievement and long-term development of leaders
Teaching As Leadership
Teach For India strongly believes that excellent teachers employ the same skills as excellent leaders in any field. Teach For India
has selected Fellows who have demonstrated excellence in the past and will cultivate these fellows to become extraordinary
leaders within the classroom who will work toward achieving significant academic gains for students and will also help Fellows
develop into leaders who will work toward creating sustainable educational reform after they complete the two-year teaching
commitment.
Partnerships
· Teach For India is inspired by Teach For America, a US-based organization with over 17,000 alumni who have impacted nearly
3million students since 1990.
· The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has provided financial support to Teach For India. A growing list of leading corporates,
graduate schools, foundations, and prominent individuals have also pledged their support for this Movement.
Teach For India-Year 1 Update
Over the last few months Teach For India received close to 2000 applications for the Fellowship and nearly 90 of these
applicants have been selected to be a part of this movement. The candidates came from leading colleges and from corporates
such as ICICI Bank, Godrej Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra, Thermax and others. The Fellows have completed an intensive
residential training in Pune, and have now been placed as full-time teachers for 2 years in 33 English Medium primary schools
across Mumbai and Pune. In their first few months of teaching in the classroom, our Fellows have already built deep bonds with
each child in their classroom, extensively visited their communities, held meetings with other teachers and principals in their
schools to fully understand the systemic problems that exist in education today and have had the opportunity to interact and
learn from several eminent leaders.
