Primeval forests in Gariwang Mountain that have been preserved for 500 years are now threatened by plans to develop the area for skiing facilities for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The mountain contains rare plant species and over 500 ancient trees that would be cut down for ski slopes, while only 181 replacement trees are planned. Environmental groups and activists oppose the development because alternative options exist under FIS rules to host ski events and protect the forest.
