1. CLIQUES
For the “cliques” assignment, we had to choose five “cliques” from our high schools and
discuss them with our group and the class. Our group chose rednecks, athletes, nerds,
burnouts, and hipsters. However, there were these “cliques” in our high schools, a lot of people
from each individual clique did hangout with people from other cliques as well so they weren’t
set in stone. It wasn’t like someone from the athlete group couldn’t talk to someone from the
nerd group. In fact, there were a lot of overlaps when it came to these groups. A lot of the
athletes were really smart and talked to the “nerds”. The same goes for the other groups, such
as the rednecks and the burnouts, as well as the rednecks and the athletes. I always noticed this
while attending high school, while there were people who stuck to their own group, there was
also a lot of overlap, unlike what you would commonly see in the media. The only real group I
could see from high school who stuck to their own, or people from other groups avoided were
the burnouts. There wasn’t usually much mixture within that group, except for the rednecks
sometimes, as I said before. The whole point of the assignment was to discuss why we group
people together and why certain people fit the stereotypes that put them in their “category”. I
thought it was interesting, however, I don’t think I grouped people from my high school into
their “cliques”. As I said before, there were many instances where people from different cliques
would congregate. I, myself, could associate myself with many different groups. I played sports
in high school, I was also very good in the classroom, and some of my friends I suppose you
could consider “hipsters”.
