1. High School Cliques
In our groups,we hadto pick five highschool cliquesthatare relevant.Mygrouppickedemos,
country,preps,jocks,andnerds.We discussedwithHeraldwhywe chose them, andwhatthe
significance tothemis.We alsoputintoperspective thatthese are “labels”and“stereotypes”andthat
we are basicallyjustjudgingpeopleonwhattheylooklike andwhotheyhangout with;whichishowwe
mentallyperceive whatgroupaspecificpersonshould“belongin”.A lotof people inthe classsaidthat
theyactuallydidn’thave “cliques”attheirhighschool because itwasso small,whichishardto believe.
My highschool wasthe most typical highschool experience youcouldthinkof.Inclass,we also
discussedhowcertain“cliques”gettreatedsolelybecause of whatgroupthey’re putin.Forinstance,I
pointedoutthatjocks andmany otherstudentsthatsimplyplaysportshave ahighamountof privilege
all throughouttheirhighschool career.Thisisbecause the school needstheirathletes,the athleteshave
to meeta certainquotato maintainplayingsports,if theydonotmeetthisquota,the administrators
will harassthe teachersuntil theygive thatjockthe grade.Thisis alsolike “geeks”or“nerds”being
pickedonsolelybecause theyare consideredsmart. Itisalsohow “preppy”people are consideredtobe
cheerleaders.Ifeltlike thiswasextremelyimportanttotalkabout,because manykidsdonotrealize the
impactthisstill hason teenagers,andIhave alsoneveranalyzedhow orwhycliquesare evenan
existingthing.
