FYS 01 High School Cliques
1. Everyone has their own views on their time in high school, mostly bad views. For most
of us, high school would have been much easier if the only people we went to school with were
the ones who we fit in with. It’s no lie that high schools have cliques and no lie that high schools
have the same cliques no matter where they are. This was certain in this discussion as everyone
in class presented the same cliques. This of course was after we individually thought about
what cliques we had in high school. These cliques included jocks, preps, band geeks, nerds, and
rednecks. When discussing these cliques as a class we were noticing how each of these groups
had stereotypes that went along with them. Such as rednecks having to have jacked up trucks
and wear boots, and preps being the ones who dress nice all the time and act like they are
better then everyone because of it. In some cases, these stereotypes are true and can clearly be
seen. Stereotypes are common and we all stereotype people every day even if we don’t
necessarily mean to. This discussion of high school cliques did a good job of reminding us that
the cliques we had to deal with in high school were brought up by stereotypes that we have
absorbed mostly from the media.
