1. The Organization That Saved Racism
by:Olivier
One day on January 18, 1960 I moved from Jamaica to USA because I
needed better education. It was emotional for me because my dad had died a
few days ago on January 10, 1960. He was buried in the Jamaica cemetery so
it was hard for me to leave him but my mother shouted at me “No no we can
not stay we have to go, you will thank me when your older.”
After the long flight we finally arrived at USA. When I got to USA people
were staring at us and I heard some people whisper “ look at their black skin
and they’re just like a poop, there the most disgusting thing I’v ever seen.”
When he got to the house the security guard asked “did you take the right
flight or bus.” My mom calmly said“yes we did so can you please appreciate us
and give us the key to our house.” I could see she was really angry in her mind
but she couldn’t be bothered to shout at him. When we got to the room my
mom said don’t ever listen to those mean bullies.
My mom said “ you will be going to K-12 and that will give you a great
education for the future.” I said “but mum I’ll get bullied by the other kids.”
Then mom said “no you have to go to school, or you’ll be grounded from
playing any thing so stop arguing.”
After we had lunch we had a delivery, it was everything I needed for
school. The delivery man asked “are you sure you are going to this school
because you don’t look like your from a USA family.” Mum got so angry that
she shouted “ yes we are not from USA but we can go to that school, theres
nothing wrong you useless delivery man.” Then the delivery man shouted back
“I’m just saying that all the kid’s are white and he will get teased.” Mom was
so annoyed that she shouted “ just give me the stuff and leave you racist
delivery man.” Then the man left with out a word. Mum was so tired of arguing
that she slammed the door behind him.
I couldn’t bother my mom after what she had gone through so I decided
to just get ready for school. In the box there was a uniform, a pencil case with
all the stationary I needed, and all the books I needed for class. I put that all
into my bag and then I asked mum if I could go to the food court to bring
some food back to eat. Mum said “yes but be careful there are bad people out
there.
At the food court I saw this place with a simple meal of burgers in fries. I
lined up then this boys pushed in front of me and said “ we can cut because
were white and you are the ugly black.” Finally I got to the front and asked for
two cheese burgers and two fries. The man said “ you are the black and we are
the white so you must give five more dollars.” I said “ but..... that is so unfair.”
The shop keeper said “ that or nothing.” I was so hungry I just bought it.
When I got home me and my mom were so hungry that we just ate with
out saying a word. After that I got ready for bed and I was so tired that I fell
asleep right away.
The next day I walked to school and I met a person called James, he was
really nice and he offered to show me around the school but then the school
was about to start. When I got to the class the teacher introduced me to the
class. She said you would sit in the corner. I said “ but..... I can’t see what
your doing.” The teacher said “ you have detention.” At the end of class she
2. gave everybody a little home work except me, she gave me 10 pages of work.
Then I had to stay in for recess because the teacher gave me detention.
After recess I just sat there in class hoping for a wish but nothing
happened. Finally it was lunch and I ate all of my chicken wings except for one
then a bully Alex said “ you won’t mind me taking a chicken wing you little
poop.” I punched him in the face and shouted “ you’re a ugly white ghost”
then my friend James said “ wow you are brave, anyway I’ll show you around
the school and after your done your home work I can show you around the
country if you want. I said “ thanks, your the only one I like in this school.”
After lunch I just sat there and she said “everyone can have a break for the
rest of the day except for Adual. Adual will be doing a test. I was shocked that
she called my name for the test. I didn’t complain because I would just get a
detention.
After school I told my mom about it. She told the school but they said “
at least we let you in.” So my mom said sorry I can’t do anything.”. When I
finished my homework James showed me around the town. This happened
every day.
One day James told me about this organization called NAAP where we
stop what is happening to me because I got treated unfairly by everyone. I
asked how will we get the people to help us. Our organization had a lot of
people how agreed and they convinced the police to help. Then the
organization made posters everywhere and they took action by convincing
people that it was unfair to treat people like that. Then our organization spread
around the world and now everyone was fair to everyone in every way.
At school everybody apologized for how they treated me. The teacher’s
gave me a award for taking action and for being brave. The school decided that
the day that every one was treated fairly, they would celebrate because they
thought that it showed bravery.
I think James is a very determined person because he helped me build
confidence and he didn’t bully me. He gave me more and more confidence to
take action. After all everybody became nice and treated everybody fairly.
