Brainstorming
Brainstorming: Wordle
Get Started:
1. Click “Create”
2. Type your words in the text box
3. Click “Go”
4. Randomize or choose the
Font, Layout and Colour you like
5. Publish or Print

http://www.wordle.net/
Using Wordles
 Use wordles for any type of assessment (for, as, of)
 User-friendly way to get kids brainstorming, as the size of the concept/word
increases with the amount of times one types it in
 Being a website, students can access from anywhere with Internet access
Get Started:
1. Click “Create”
2. Type your words in the text box
3. Click “Go”
4. Randomize or choose the font, Layout and Colour you like
5. Publish or Print*
* most effective way is to hit “Prt Sc” (print screen), open Paint, then paste, crop,
save as a JPEG
 REMEMBER: do your back work on a separate Word document because you
cannot go back to edit once you hit “GO”…
 TIP: to get phrases together use a tilde (~) i.e. Learning~Strategies, then it will
show up on one line rather than multiple places
http://www.stormboard.com
What is Stormboard used for?
 Stormboard (formally edistorm) is a brainstorming website
that incorporates “post-its” for thoughts;
 Can create your own document, add users (by email invitation
such as a class or group), have all students brainstorm, then
collaborate, condense ideas, and come to a consensus; can
even comment and change colours based on “big ideas” or
themes;
 A way to create a collaborative and interactive classroom
because students can log into the website (user name, email,
password) to move ideas around like a “post-it-pile-it” activity
without any printing required
❽
Studying
http://headmagnet.com/
Using Headmagnet
 A quiz-generating study tool; again, as a website it allows for greater
accessibility opposed to licenced software
 Students can enter in information for each of their classes (separate tabs
created) on a weekly basis to keep it fresh
 The website generates quizzes and the student chooses the form, for
example:
 Answer only (like Jeopardy)
 Question only
 Short answer/multiple choice

 Promotes effective self-regulatory skills by having students track their
progress under the “my head” section
 Features: My Lists, My Head, Friends (promotes collaboration, share
lists, learn together)
Using Headmagnet cont’d

Top 10 Most Important Tricks to Integrating AT into the Classroom_M.Gollan-Wills_2013

Editor's Notes

  1. Demonstration:QR Code=quick responseGo to the qrcode.kaywa.com website.Cut and paste the web address you would like to convert into the white box.Download, copy, or save the QR image.Use my GLE website/wikispaces: http://learningstrategiesgle.wikispaces.com/ To activate a QR code, download an app like ScanLife and hold your camera phone up to the image. The image will load and your phone will take you to the website. Demonstrate using my iPhone. This is a valuable tool for students who have difficulty typing in long web addresses. Connection to GLE:Great for new ppts. or websites you want your kids to visit. In our research skills unit, this would be the perfect opportunity to put up QR codes of the various websites you want them to use on the SMARTboard. This serves as a link as well, so even paste them on digital documents in the network’s hand-out folder so kids don’t have to type out the link or hyperlink, rather they can click the code and go!I use QR codes for my various wikispaces so students can easily access the class files in class or at home.

  3. Portable scanners are ordered through equipment requests for SEA applications.Traditionally LSTs have ordered flatbed scanners, which are ideal for elementary classrooms, where in secondary this model is simply not feasible. Students maneuver around the school in up to 8 different classrooms per year, making a portable scanning device ideal for secondary panel.Demonstration/Activity:Already have the USB scanner plugged in and the laptop turned on with Kurzweil openTake a sample Law quiz (hand out if needed) and have participants scan in (downwards) as a JPEG and right into Kurzweil.Connection to GLE:Every day with hard copies of handouts, including photocopies from workbooks, etc.Use for hard copies of tests and assessments/assignments and scan directly into Kurzweil.LST promote use daily, particularly for unit #6 Study Skills when compiling a digital binder (use in conjunction with OneNote that trick to come!).
  4. This is a great (and simple) way to turn your handouts into PDFs and takes seconds to prep for your students, with regards to digital copies of notes (as per a student’s IEP).1. Place the document that you want to scan face up in the feed tray of the copier.2. Log on to the copier using your ID card or manually using your tvnet account.3. Select the SCAN menu button.4. Choose EMAIL from the scan menu.5. Select OK once you ensure your email has been entered/stored (top under “to”).
  5. 6. Place the documents FACE UP and press SCAN.7. Log off and go to a computer; log into First Class email and you will see your PDFs!8. Forward the email that you received from the copier to ocr@tvdsb.on.ca - once the PDF has been converted, it will be emailed back to you by default as a Word Document; since the new Adobe will allow for a conversion to Word, this is ideal for your documents that you may have lost the digital copy and would like to give to students to manipulate (i.e. charts) on the laptop.
  6. AVC: Three steps!Click “Add Video Files” to import video clips (if in another format) OR “Add URLs” for a YouTube video. Paste in and select the path you prefer (i.e. wmv, mps).Click “Convert.”Similar to online converter:First you select what you want the output file/target to be. For example, I might want my file to be converted to a Windows Media Video (since this plays well in Power Point).Next, paste the web address into the URL bar or upload a file in the Browse bar. Then, kick the Convert File button.Lastly, your file will convert and you will click the Save button and choose a place to save it. Demonstration/Activity:Visit the online-convert website http://www.online-convert.com/ and use the following youtube video link to convertYouTube find video click “share” highlight the link that is uncovered i.e. “ http://youtu.be/MPnudujlBZI ”Connection to GLE:Highly beneficial for students that are not entitled to Kurzweil copies of books that may require an audio format of a book. Can save the audio from a YouTube video rather than the visual component.Great for students’ presentations, including goal setting culminating (glogster interactive poster) and ISP (what I have learned this year in GLE).
  7. Kurzweil 3000 is the most used/popular form of text-to-speech software.Kurzweil houses many features and specialized/unique/custom settings on the four toolbars.Demonstration:Begin where the portable scanner left off with the scanned in copy of the quiz.Tools tab “Fill in the blanks”Read (red toolbar)Speed/Type (yellow toolbar) change to sentence, paragraph, phrase…; continuous, self-paced, etc.ThumbnailsSticky notesHighlightersTools tab Column notes (Main Ideas/Supporting Ideas/Other); great for students working on OSSLT prep with summary paragraphs or opinion essays/paragraphs in GLE NOTE: to change the note sizes (sticky, text), go to “Tools” “Note” “Default Note Options” change colour, size, etc.Activity:Have participants use the document they scanned in to manipulate and utilize the tabs and toolbar features.
  8. The no Glasses Lite app is ideal for farsighted individuals, those with reading glasses or bifocals, or anyone who needs to see more clearly. No Glasses Lite is FREE and it works with the camera to clearly display text or imagery. You can choose between 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x magnification. You can also take freeze/screen captions then magnify them for clarity.Alternatively, students can turn on the camera function on their phones to magnify an image that way.Ideal for students that are visually impaired and it is more convenient in the secondary panel versus carrying around a zoom lens.TVDSB does not provide for apps in SEA orders, but this is a great option for one’s cell phone to have the tools to aid the student at his/her hands.
  9. SMART Ideas benefits all students, particularly those with organizational skills (sequential) and organizational (spatial).Demonstration and Connection to GLE:Open up the GLE ISP “Investigating My Exceptionality”This type of scaffold is ideal for students requiring organizational coaching.Unit #2 (multiple intelligences) and Unit #8 ISP (investigating exceptionality for identified students or strengths and needs for non-identified students).Discuss Prezi web 2.0 app(web)find Rachael’s http://prezi.com/rrbw80bqt_df/isp-part-2/Discuss “for” (brainstorming), “as” (formative, i.e. multiple intelligences), and “of” (GLE summative with investigating their own exceptionality).
  10. Easy-to-use mind mapping softwareAccessible to any studentOn many school network images;Free 30 day trialsProvides students with a digital framework to organize their ideas for virtually any subject area and any type of written or visual assignment; think visually, brainstorm ideasBenefits all students, particularly those with organizational skills (sequential) and organizational (spatial) areas of needUnlike paper diagrams, SMART ideas allows students to edit, move ideas around, change connections and colours, and develop any type of map from the brainstorming stage to a published product
  11. Completely digital binderImproves organization; no loss of documents or hard copy handoutsUser-friendly:Just start typing!Create tabs for units or coursesDrag and drop images, charts, videosCan use in conjunction with Kurzweil and dragon (insert with ease)Upload documents right into the noteDate feature to keep students organizedThere’s an App for ‘dat (available for the iPhone)
  12. Demonstration:Show the OneNote example binder on the Department Laptop “Gollan-Wills GLE OneNOTE” file folder on the desktop.Walk participants through the tabs, inserting ppt. doc. images, etc. You can just start typing! No need to insert boxes. The Microsoft One Note App allows student to create searchable notes with text, pictures, and bullets. Make and manage to-do lists with checkboxes. Then keep notes in sync using free Microsoft SkyDrive online (www.skydrive.com) storage to access, edit and manage them from virtually anywhere, from a PC or almost any web browser. One Note is free for iPhone create lists and add check boxes Activity:Have participants create a tab and play around with the software.
  13. Demonstration:Begin by using the Department laptop and open up your current voice file “Mrs. Gollan-Wills.”On the toolbar, go to “tools” “Dragon Pad” begin dictating (use a sample sheet and read as normal). Illustrate to the audience the importance of training the voice rather than hitting Enter or Backspace all the time. Dragon is an incredible piece of software that is similar to a muscle…it must be worked out, stretched, and nourished. Note: F8 (hot key to turn on mic)Commands to practice: delete that, scratch that, next line, period, comma, colon, spell that, go to sleep, wake up…Activity:Tell participants to set up voice file.(1) On Dragon Toolbar, click tab “NaturallySpeaking” scroll down to “Manage Users” click “New” type in your user name fix settings (usually default are good), with Language as English, Accent as General, Dictation Source as USB Microphone**, Vocabulary as General, and Initial training as short. Click “Next.”(2) red box screen “C-Media” Next(3)(4) volume and quality checks Next(5) Training begins Go (yellow arrows)(6) Select your story different syllable count per line depending on your student; also available is the educator’s reading (recommended for this activity).Connection to GLE:Daily integration into the curriculum. Accommodation for instruction and assessment. Ideal for fine motor difficulties, low phonemic awareness, or phonological skills as a need.
  14. For the iPhone, iPad, iPod touchDragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text content for everything from email messages to blog posts on your iPad™, iPhone™ or iPod touch™.http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragon-dictation/id341446764?mt=8Free through the iTunes Store
  15. WordQ is multidimensional. It has REPLACED Write-Out-Loud, which was on the previous image. This word prediction software is also a text-to-speech software program that allows students to listen to their written work without Kurzweil (and it is ON THE NETWORK, which is great for students that do not have a Kurzweil licence or for those students that may not have their laptop in a computer lab).Ideal for students that do not have access to Kurzweil all the time or are in a computer lab with the rest of their class.Available on the network so access is granted on any computer on the TVDSB network.WordQ allows users to see the list of words and have them read to the user, so he/she may choose the appropriate word. All computers on the network now have Word Q, which is certainly a step-up from Write OutLoud.SpeakQ is also available through this company.Key: on the network for all students to use. Ideal for students with low phonemic awareness or phonological skills as a need on their IEP.Connection to GLE:Daily editing for written work on computer/word processor for students that do not have access to Kurzweil frequently.
  16. Check out the introductory video to Proloquo2Go (~5min) embed video of link belowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKc1Ss5d1Nw&feature=relatedTVDSB does not support apple products in their SEA applications; however, some apps are a great alternative for students that perhaps do not qualify for SEA or whose parents are looking for assistive technology that they can purchase to help their child reach curriculum.A great alternative for non-verbal students, those with cerebral palsy, autism, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease), etc.. The cost is $189.99 and can be used in conjunction with an iPad or tablet. A small cost compared to the highly complex Dynavox (~$30, 000) or a Springbok.
  17. Another online AT database is our very own TVDSB AT Library.Over the years of LSTs sending novels to the board to be sliced and scanned (and zone edited), members have compiled an amazing digital repository. Must log into the portal on the side click “Learning Object Repository” “Special Education” “AT Library”Must enter students name first, then search for resource.
  18. W. Ross Macdonald (AERO Alternative Education Resources Ontario)A web-based digital repository operated by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and UniversitiesStudents entitled must have a perceptual disability (LD, language, vision, etc.)Any LST can register, which is what we are going to do today!Add students as they require resources. Must search catalogue and order. Must provide start date (next day or later) and the end date of the course, usually the last day of the semester. Must then by returned via mail OR if a digital copy is downloaded, you must log back into the site to click off the “return” box.Can search prior to ordering for a student.Usually delivered within 2 weeks.Formats include: Daisy digital audio, Kurzweil, braille, large print, etc.Activity:Lead participants through the log in/creation of an account: “Advisor Registration.”
  19. Watch the Headmagnet videohttp://headmagnet.comTake participants through the practice Headmagnet quiz.Sign inGo to My ListsCheck of “Canada” boxClick “Study Now”Choose settings StudyThen check out “My Head” to see my statisticsConnection to GLE:Unit #6 study skills uses this website to create their own study notes in preparation for their exams. HeadMagnet FridaysSelf-quizzesPeer quizzes with same subjects/teachersActivity:Have participants create their own Headmagnet account.
  20. In iGoogle you can add apps to keep track of major goals, events, due dates, lists etc. in your life.Add apps and links for quicker accessibility to frequently used sites. E.g., dictionary.com, hotmail, my bookmarks, twitter, google news, school homepage, a teacher webpage, unit converter, google docs, etc.Just click on Add Gadgets on the left hand side and search.Connection to GLE:The perfect GLE homepage, as it houses the post-it notes for daily tasks, the date and time, links, documents uploaded, etc.
  21. Pinterest is considered a “tool to collect and organize the things you love”; however, it is an excellent organizational tool and time saver for the classroom.Allows you to “fill your home feed” with pins of interest. This could range from Media Moments for a Media Studies class, to forms of AT to integrate into the classroom, and even all the daily reflections by month (separate board for each month).Users can easily edit and delete pins, as well as allow users to create different boards for different purposes. Can add images or videos, followed by a space to provide step-by-step instructions, set context, or even provide details for your viewers. Can have privacy or “secret” settings that you can only share with specified others. Can log in with an email OR with Facebook.
  22. Wikispaces: a free social networking site that allows you to easily create and manage a classroom website and blog equipped with a variety of designs and allows you to post videos, photos, text, hyperlinks, assignments and podcasts. There is an option when setting up whether you would like to keep your wiki private (only those invited can edit) or public (so anyone can edit).Wikispaces allow anyone to see the site and contents, but personalized settings will determine who can edit. Can choose to use a wiki for either a unit, a course, or even as a conference and resources/sharing site.Great to create QR codes for that hyperlink to other sites (including the TVDSB website).
  23. A small clip to showcase how we need to use technology responsibly, where it is a helper rather than a hindrance.
