• The mission of Children's Hospital Central California is to 
provide high quality, comprehensive healthcare services to 
children, regardless of their ability to pay, and to 
continuously improve the health and well-being of 
children.

POPULATIONS-AT-RISK 
Children’s Hospital Central California 
(CHCC) addresses needs for these 
populations: 
• The medically underserved 
• Those who have poor access to healthcare 
• Those who are medically uninsured 
• Those with chronic illnesses 
• Those with a language barrier 
• Those with transportation difficulties
COMMUNITY CONTEXT 
• Serves 9 counties (Madera, Fresno, Merced, 
Mariposa, Tulare, Kings, Kern, and Stanislaus) 
• 8 of these counties are considered Health 
Professional Shortage areas in primary, mental 
and dentistry care 
• 99% of inpatient and outpatient cases come 
from these 9 counties 
• According to kidsdata.org, 1/3 of children living 
in these 9 regions live in poverty, ¾ of children 
are another ethnicity different from Caucasian, 
¼ live in with families in which English is not 
primary language. 
• Medi-Cal covers 73% of inpatients at CHCC

SERVICES PROVIDED 
To patients: 
• Speech Services- help children develop their speech 
• Oncology- Services for children with cancer 
• Immunology- Immune system deficiencies. 
• Pathology- Laboratory services. 
• Cardiology- Diagnosis and treatment of children's heart 
conditions. 
To families: 
• Social services- which offer spiritual and chaplain 
services, interpreter services, and clinical psychology. 
• Pharmacy- available 24 hrs/day bedside or by phone.. 
• Child Life services- recreational play time for patients and 
their families, helps them cope with being hospitalized 
• Spiritual services- chaplain available on-call
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

(CHCC) is a not-for-profit medical 
center. 
• CHCC is governed by a Board of 
Trustees in which community members 
are a part of 
• Todd Suntrapak, President & CEO of 
CHCC takes direction from these 
members
SOCIAL WORK VALUES 
• CHCC provide their employees with 
opportunities to expand their cultural 
competence by providing seminars and 
practicing no-discrimination policies. 
• CHCC provides respect by abiding to patient 
privacy rights (HIPPA) 
• CHCC makes sure all families are empowered 
with knowledge to become their own advocate 
and make informed decisions about their 
families health by providing information and 
resources in their language by providing 
interpretive services at any time
Hospital Infantil Universitario Niño Jesus 
-Pediatric Hospital in Madrid, Spain est. 1877 
• Committed to: Providing quality pediatric care. 
• Community Context: Serves about 90,000 
children a year, ages 0-18 in Madrid and all 
regions. 
• Services Provided: Surgery, Nephrology, 
Neurology, and accessibility through public 
transport 
• Social Work Values: Patient rights, including 
confidentiality and privacy of their medical 
information
PERSONAL REFLECTION 
It was interesting to see the differences between 
these two hospitals. I still do not know it all at my 
own agency placement, I’m still figuring some stuff 
out. Luckily, with the help of my supervisor and 
social services director, and the hospital website, I 
was able to find most information. As far as the 
hospital in Madrid, they seem to have similar 
objectives in mind, and similar approaches. I did 
notice Hospital Infantil has a Patient Services 
department, which is where their social work 
branch is. I liked seeing that even Spanish social 
workers have the same goal in mind for patients 
and their families
