3. Connections! How to read Literature like a Professor THE KING MUST DIE “myth is a body of story the matters.”(65) This quote relates to the story of Theseus because it shows that without the story, this myth would have no importance to the other Greek myths. This story shows the struggle many Greek heroes go through. Usually, the heroes in Greek stories are gods, in this case, Theseus was half man half god, since he had the blood of Poiseden. The myth of Theseus also matters because it is embedded in our culture. In many movies now, you see an unlikely hero, like Theseus overcome many obstacles because they wanted answers as to where they were born and who there father was. In Mary Renaults book The King Must Die. It takes place in the city of athens, when young Theseus believes he is the son of Poseidon. His grandfather King Pittheus thinks Poseidon had something to do with his birth, but his father is the Aigeus, the king of athens. So Theuseus travels to Athens. There are many obstacles on the way to athens, he travels to the city of Eleius, he kills the king there and becomes one. Then he travels to athens almost being poisoned by his dad. Once he becomes king of athens, the people of Crete come to capture people, and Theseus volunteers to go. By then he becomes a bull dancer and defeats Asterion power thirsty king of Crete.
4. Connections… “ Why should someone try to compare modern fisherman with these legendary heroes, many of whom descended from gods?.” (66) Many Greek story lines are the building blocks of many story tellers. Even I could produce a great story because I could use Greek mythology such as Theseus . In the great city of aurora, a young boy could sense when a flood was coming. He believed that his father was the great god Poseidon, so he traveled far distances in order to find out who his dad was. My short story here shows that I could use the story line of Theseus, and create my own. All great stories come from somewhere, I think they all come from Greek mythologies.
5. Connections to future books..? “The recognition makes our experience of literature richer, deeper, more meaningful, so that our own modern stores also matter, also share in the power of myth. “ (73) By this quote, I can connect this chapter to how to read literature like a professor to future books I read. myth is a body of story the matters, creators of myth show adversity that many gods have to overcome. So when we read modern books now, we could connect it to the gods, a simple story like harry potter shows traces of Greek mythology. Harry potter was an unlikely hero to get rid of the dark forces, just like Theseus. Also, this quote means that when we read a story, it is more meaningful, because it is connected to a myth. “ myth is a body of story the matters.” Since it’s connected to a myth, then the body of the story matter, that’s why its so important and it has a deep meaning.
