Leonardo - VET - Interpersonal Communication Skills - Carl Rogers and creating the 'right' conditions for a relationship
1. Carl Rogers and Creating the
‘Right’ Relationship
Part A of Session 4
2. CARL ROGER’S PERSON-CENTRED
APPROACH MODEL
• In the last few weeks we have looked at theories
and models by Daniel Goleman, (Emotional
Intelligence), David Clark’s (3s Model) & Abraham
Maslow's (Hierarchy of Needs).
• In this session we are going to look at another
humanistic model by Carl Rogers, who is from the
same school of thought as Abraham Maslow.
3. CARL ROGER’S PERSON-CENTRED
APPROACH
• “If I can provide a certain type of relationship,
the other person will discover within
{themselves} the capacity to use that
relationship for growth, and change and
personal development will occur.”
• Rogers, 1961, p.33, On Becoming a Person.
4. ROGER’S THEORY OF PERSONALITY
• Each of us is like an acorn, unless our environment prohibits
it, we are primed for growth and fulfilment.
• The Three Core Conditions for a growth promoting
environment are:
1. Realness in the facilitator of learning, i.e. genuineness,
honesty with emotions.
2. Prizing i.e. unconditional positive regard towards another
person, acceptance, i.e. being non judgemental & trust.
3. Empathic understanding (i.e. empathy)
• (adapted from Rogers 1983, pp 121-126, Freedom to Learn
for the 80’s)
5.
6. • So, in groups think of/share one case
study from your practice and evaluate
how useful (or not) this approach would
be.
• What are the potential benefits?
• What are its weaknesses?
