2. A Brief History of the Airplane
Invented by Orville and Wilbur Wright, the first successful
airplane flight took place on December 17, 1903, in Raleigh,
North Carolina. It was the first time that a machine was able to
carry a human being, rise under its own power, hold a steady
airspeed, and land without damage. The craft held an altitude of
ten feet and traveled 120 feet in a flight that lasted 12 seconds.

3. A Brief History of the Airplane
While early airplanes utilized propellers to attain the speed
necessary to create lift, modern planes generally use jet engines.
Invented by Englishman Frank Whittle and German-born Hans
von Ohain in the late 1930s, jet engines allow airplanes to attain
much faster speeds and much higher altitudes. These are the
most commonly used engines for commercial and military
purposes.
