Solar Kitchen and Kindergarden
for a School in Simbabwe
A Project
of students & professors of
HTL Pinkafeld in cooperation with PFAU
Abstract
The Kariyangwe Mission School in Simbabwe serves 800 pupils.
Since 2014, the year of a great draught, this students are provided
with one meal a day. These meals are cooked in 3 unhygienic pots
over inefficient bonfires consuming 25 tons of firewood a year.
But trees are scarce and deforestation a major problem. Therefor
a kitchen was planed and will be built to reduce the energy con-
sumption significantly. This will be reached by using solar power
as well as an efficient stove. Three different concepts where taken
into account and evaluated. The fuel reduction is estimated to be
80-90%. Hygiene, safety as well as comfort will be increased.
Further more a Kindergarten was planed and will be build parallel.

Choosen System
• 35% of the solar energy supply will be provided by
12m² of flat collectors. They provide up to 80° hot
water with the help of a thermo syphon principle.
They also use diffuse radiation whereby providing also
war water on less sunny days. That water is used as
pre heated water to cook and wash.
• 65% of the solar energy supply will be provided by a
2x12m extendable parabolic troughs collector with
aluminum mirror. The heat fluid is pressurized water
at 120°C at 1bar. This water is used to heat the pots.
The water circulates with the help of handpumps.
• At ca. 60 days auxiliary heat is provided by an itegra-
ted stove which directly heats the process water.

  • 22. Choosen System • 35% of the solar energy supply will be provided by 12m² of flat collectors. They provide up to 80° hot water with the help of a thermo syphon principle. They also use diffuse radiation whereby providing also war water on less sunny days. That water is used as pre heated water to cook and wash. • 65% of the solar energy supply will be provided by a 2x12m extendable parabolic troughs collector with aluminum mirror. The heat fluid is pressurized water at 120°C at 1bar. This water is used to heat the pots. The water circulates with the help of handpumps. • At ca. 60 days auxiliary heat is provided by an itegra- ted stove which directly heats the process water.
