3. ABSTARCT
Solar cooking is one of the most promising techniques to meet the
cooking needs in remote areas where electricity and fuel supplies
are insufficient. Solar box cooker is an efficient device used in solar
cooking as it is simple to fabricate, easy to operate and hazard-free.
A latent heat energy storage system was designed and fabricated to
cook the food at off-peak hours of solar radiation. The estimated
dimension of the box cooker area is around 0.28 m2, for the energy
requirements of 2859 KJ/day for cooking. This latent heat energy
storage system is combined with the solar box cooker. The selection
of phase change material will base on high specific enthalpy and its
melting point lying close to the cooking temperature
4. Solar cooking is the simplest, safest, most convenient
way to cook food without consuming fuels or heating
up the kitchen. Many people choose to solar cook for
these reasons. But for hundreds of millions of people
around the world who cook over fires fueled
by wood or dung, and who walk miles to
collect firewood or spend much of their meager
incomes on fuel, solar cooking is more than a choice
— it is a blessing.
Solar cookers are portable, allowing for solar
cooking at work sites or while pursuing outdoor
activities like picnics, trekking or camping
5. FEATURES
Works in non solar hours
Uses renewable energy
Non harmful
Portable
Simple to construct
6. In this project we are developing the solar cooker with thermal
storage capacity Feature
The stored thermal energy is being used in non solar hours for
cooking purposes
The thermal energy is stored by using phase change material
The selection of phase change material depends on the material
having high Specific enthalpy and its melting point close to cooking
temperature
7. SELECTION OF PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL
After undergoing the properties of different phase change
materials Like wax, molten salt and different edible oils finally
unrefined Sunflower oil is selected by calculating different
properties are Mentioned below
Flash point - 315 oC
Fire point - 371 oC
10. To obtain the maximum refractivity of the solar light the aluminum sheets
Are arranged on the open side of the box as shown in the figure
The thickness of the toughen glass is 10mm to get the maximum
reflectivity of the solar light
Black paint coating is done one inner side walls of the box to absorb the
Maximum heat as black as the high absobitivity
11. Advantages
Uses in non solar hours
Solar cooker uses Sun’s energy to heat and cook food.
It is inexhaustible and clean renewable source of energy.
It is free for all and available in unlimited amount.
Hence, operating a solar cooker is not expensive.
No maintenance cost
12. Dis advantages
It does not work without sunlight. Hence, on cloudy day, it becomes
useless.
Difficult to handle
The places where the days are too short or places with cloud covers
round the year, have limited utility for solar cooker.
13. RESULT
Hence we are developing the solar cooker with thermal energy storage
Capacity feature that is used for non solar hours i.e., nights
