A quick overview presentation I made at work to show the differences of to have a classic file server in comparison to have file sharing 365 solution on Microsoft cloud. This exercise appeared for a migration need looking for a modern solution. In summary: On a classic file share, the data is consumed locally or via VPN if you are out of internal network. You need a backup plan for accidental deletions. On a modern 365 solution, data is consumed the same way residing internally or externally network. Department folders are stored on SharePoint online solution and personal users folders, under OneDrive for business. There is no backup that comes with the 365 solution, so you need take care of the 90 days removals (if you don’t want a backup plan). You can maintain Active Directory security permissions used on classic file share in order to have a smooth migration.
