3. A Second Discipling PauseâŚ
â˘This is the 2nd of 3 messages
sprinkled through the âmiracleâ
messages in chapters 8 and 9
â˘In the first one, Jesus talked about the cost of
true salvation, and that some wouldnât âpayâ
â˘In this message, Jesus gives us four pictures of
His ministryâs purpose on Earth
â˘We already know about Matthewâs call, Ch 1
4. A Second Discipling PauseâŚ
â˘The reason it is recounted here is to
open the door to Jesusâ teaching on
the first of four illustrations
â˘In this passage, Heâll teach them about His role
as the Physician, the Bridegroom, the Weaver
of Cloth, and NewWineskins
â˘All of which will give us a greater picture, that
of His coming brings us new life!
5. 9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a
man called Matthew, sitting in the tax
collectorâs booth; and He *said to him,
âFollow Me!â And he got up and followed
Him.
10 Then it happened that as Jesus was
reclining at the table in the house, behold,
many tax collectors and sinners came and
were dining with Jesus and His disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said
6. collectors and sinners?â 12 But when Jesus
heard this, He said, âIt is not those who are
healthy who need a physician, but those
who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this
means: âI DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT
SACRIFICE,â for I did not come to call the
righteous, but sinners.â
14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him,
asking, âWhy do we and the Pharisees
fast, but Your disciples do not fast?â 15 And
7. cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is
with them, can they? But the days will
come when the bridegroom is taken away
from them, and then they will fast. 16 But no
one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an
old garment; for the patch pulls away from
the garment, and a worse tear results.
17 Nor do people put new wine into old
wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst,
and the wine pours out and the wineskins
8. but they put new wine into fresh wineskins,
and both are preserved.â
Matthew 9:9-17, (NASB)
10. 9 As Jesus went on from there, He saw a
man called Matthew, sitting in the tax
collectorâs booth; and He *said to him,
âFollow Me!â And he got up and followed
Him.
10 Then it happened that as Jesus was
reclining at the table in the house, behold,
many tax collectors and sinners came and
were dining with Jesus and His disciples.
11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said
11. collectors and sinners?â 12 But when Jesus
heard this, He said, âIt is not those who are
healthy who need a physician, but those
who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this
means: âI DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT
SACRIFICE,â for I did not come to call the
righteous, but sinners.â
12. A.The PhysicianâŚ
â˘Vv 9-13, to heal the sickâŚ
â˘The âReligiousâ Pharisees
mocked Jesus for eating
with lowlifes and scumbags
â˘I believe He said the word ârighteousâ with air
quotesâ tongue in cheek
â˘This is what the church is supposed to beâ a
âhospitalâ for the imperfect, not a clubhouse
14. 14 Then the disciples of John *came to Him,
asking, âWhy do we and the Pharisees
fast, but Your disciples do not fast?â 15 And
Jesus said to them, âThe attendants of the
bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the
bridegroom is with them, can they? But the
days will come when the bridegroom is
taken away from them, and then they will
fast.
15. B.The BridegroomâŚ
â˘Vv 14-15, Fasting or Feasting?
â˘There are many lessons that are
found in these verses; Fasting,
Church, family, etc.
â˘But He clearly here indicates that
He is addressing the life of the
God-follower: itâs supposed to be joyous; like a
wedding receptionâ not a grievous, heavy,
sad, burdensome funeral!!
17. 16 But no one puts a patch of unshrunk
cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls
away from the garment, and a worse tear
results.
Matthew 9:16,
(NASB)
18. C.The ClothâŚ
â˘Vs 16, New cloth=wholenessâŚ
â˘Look at the way this patch on a
piece of denim reacted to its
hostâ it eventually shrank and
pulled away from its stitching,
ripping a new hole in the jeans
â˘He came not to fix Jewish Religion, but to give
us fulfilled âreligionâ, (a relationship)â all
things are new with Jesus
20. 17 Nor do people put new wine into old
wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst,
and the wine pours out and the wineskins
are ruined; but they put new wine into
fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.â
Matthew 9:9-17, (NASB)
22. D. NewWineskinsâŚ
â˘Vs 17, Spiritual fullnessâŚ
⢠This is a picture of new skins
â˘Remember what wine represents
â˘There is a real physical change
in the leather when new wine is
poured insideâ a chemical reaction that
changes the skin itself: old skins split open
and the wine falls out; New Skin for New Life!
23. Take Home!
â˘Jesus came to heal the spirit of
us âsickâ sinners
â˘The Bridegroom teaches us that
our Christian lives are to be a
joyful feast, not a funeral!
â˘He came to make us whole; not just âpatchâ us
together and let us fall apart!
â˘He didnât come to fix religion, but to bring us
New Life!
