Youthpass Certificate is an officially approved document that recognizes learning out-
comes from youth work activities such as EVS, Mobility of Youth Workers, Structured Di-
alogue meetings and other programs instituted by the European Commission to promote
non-formal learning.
EVS Programs last from minimum 2 weeks to up to 12 moths. All necessary costs
related to the volunteering project, such as accommodation, travel and local transport,

Teatro Metaphora chooses different art
forms as means to attract and communicate
with local and foreign viewers on important
issues such as ecological awareness. As-
sociation as its indicated in its official name
executes theatrical performances but stage
productions aren’t the main concern of the
organization. Teatro Metaphora carries out
divers original pursuits such as sculpturing,
modelling untypical creative installations as
well as conducting artistic extemporizations.
Objectives of the project
Tale of the two cities aims at deploying youth to participate in multiple activities for
the purpose of increasing awareness and appreciation of cultural and environmental
heritage of Madeira Island. EVS participants engage in various endeavours for strength-
ening integration of local community and promote healthy lifestyles. Each participant
has a chance to obtain valuable knowledge in how to skilfully manage time, learn in-
depth about local culture and language. In addition, all participants are expected to
perform their own personal projects related to the core activity.

L ATA S P R O J E C T
EVS participants along with association supporters had a chance to create unique
street decorations that are being exhibited throughout summer 2017 in Câmara de
Lobos.
The LATAS exhibition is destined to draw people’s attention to the significantly un-
favourable impact of manufacturing aluminium cans. In addition to this, LATAS intend
to get people aware of health issues linked with consuming fizzy drink.
Animate for ACTION
Teatro Metaphora jointly with Casa do Povo, another non-profit Madeiran organiza-
tion; came out on the streets of Câmara de Lobos to campaign against employment of
aluminium cans as main preserving material for popular beverages. Activities took into
employment various communication tools as well as artistic modes. Participants had
a chance to interact with local community and pass knowledge about environmental
impact of aforementioned. Volunteers and supporters of the organization go out on the
streets to promote ecological awareneness.

6. summer games:
jogos interfreguesias II
Main objective of this event is to promote healthy lifestyle of youth and adults and
to develop teamwork. It is a healthy competition between five teams from different
districts of Madeira island. There was eight central games which main themes were
about the traditions of the venue city. The main goal of the activity was to improve
quality of work, develop logistic skills of the players, increase their participation in
civic life and encourage them doing their own community projects.
This project aims to fight social apathy and also the lack of active participation
of young people and community in general, in environmental issues. Most of the
gadgets used for the games were made from recycling materials and trash.
juventude ativa:
let’s promote healthy lifestyle!
Main objective of this event is to promote healthy lifestyle of youth and to develop
teamwork as well. Volunteers of Teatro Metaphora and Casa do Povo together with
association’s members worked on idea of “Star of Youthness” - a city instalation cre-
ated from thousands little stars cutted from cans. From the one hand, the art istalation
was directly connected with idea of youthness: youngests as stars, our bright future;
from the other hand - it was a city signal to alert young people about our environmental
problems.
This time volunteers and members of Teatro Metaphora were also participants of
the event to spread creative ideas, eco lifestyle and values of being volunteers.
It was a nice opportunity to promote also cultural heritage, build connection with
local community and share ideas of ecologically responsible life-style.
7. Flower-power:
procession of the holy sacrament
Volunteers of Teatro Metaphora and Casa do Povo: Izabela, Dariusz and Justi-
na and Katerina under the leadership of Anastasia Mazur were active involved into
designing and implementing the project of flower carpet. The project was strongly
connected with promotion of cultural heritage and local traditions and also to spread
values of peace and respect.
People decorated main streets of Câmara de Lobos for the proccesion of The Holy
Sacrament in August 2017. First steps were to draw specials religious symbols on
the streets and than fill its by colourful flowers, leaves, grass and natural elements.

graphic design:
breaking down the communication barrier!
Izabela Puk, as an experienced graphic designer, tried to use design in a new social
context: as a way of intercultural communication. She helped with two main projects: visual
identification for Human Library and one of game called memo for Jogos Interfreguesias II.
In the first one, she used design tools as a story-teller, she needed to show a teaser
of the stories as a blurb in the book cover. Something catchy and yuvenile to collect
audience for the event. In the second one she designed
memo cards that were printed on recycling materials. The
idea was to create signs of Madeira, so she improved her
general knowledge about island in this oryginal way.

8. Forest-Pic Photography Contest
The first such initiative organized in Madeira Island. Teatro Metaphora Association
in collaboration with Eco-Carmo Environmental Club and with polish volunteer Dariusz
Sirko initiated a very special opportunity for young people to exhibit their knowledge on
invasive species. Photography Contest aims at fostering awareness of unfavourable
impact of invasive species on Madeiran indigenous greenery.
main goal:
# to increase the knowledge
about invasive species
hospital dos pequeninos:
hospital for the little ones
Teatro Metaphora was a contributor to the unusual event dedicated for children and
their parents. The driving force behind the Hospital dos Pequeninos project was Jaime
Miguel Abreu, a medical student, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto. This
enthusiastic young adult managed to call together local authorities, NGOs and other
contributors from private sector to engage and make the event happen. From 17th till
21st of July 2017 this famous Museu de Imprensa Madeira in Camara De Lobos turned
into magic hospital where children could learn how to prevent diseases, what are the
fundamental conditions to maintain good health and peaceful frame of mind.

9. SEED:
Sectors United for foresting employability
The project SEED (seed2020.eu), supported by Erasmus+ Programme, is devel-
oped by Teatro Metaphora together with other associations from Hungary, the UK, the
Netherlands, Romania and Croatia.
SEED Project was aimed at development of competences for young adults in vir-
tual environment. The EU Partners from 6 different member states, each from distinct
regional sector formed an ally force and produced an online platform with courses
designed at teaching how to properly work remotely, that’s away from the office.
During the closing conference of the project around 50 participants from Portugal
and other European countries learned essential skills of online communication, time
management and teambuilding: for example, how to appear likeable through a skype
call; how to structure your day if you don’t have any supervision; how to behave if a
new team starts gossiping about the boss who you’ve never seen in person etc.
SEED- Sectors United for foresting employability, an online course for young people
was presented in Centro de Juventude do Funchal on Friday, 18 August 2017.

biblioteca viva:
human library
Human Library, initiative organized as a personal project by Katerina Popovska, macedo-
nian EVS participant together with Casa do Povo, Biblioteca Municipal de Câmara de Lobos
and Teatro Metaphora. It was the very first event of such kind organized in Câmara de Lobos.
Human Library it is a method designed to promote dialogue, reduce prejudices and stim-
ulate understanding another people’s reality. The gathering targeted local people to exchange
ideas and experience, since each individual is like an open book that has stories to tell.
In this case, the idea was to share values of Erasmus+ with the local community. Our
main goal was to encourage young people and the community to travel, live or study abroad,
expanding horizons and combating stereotypes and prejudices about other cultures. We
also promote participation in international projects (exchanges, volunteering, training cours-
es) under the Erasmus + Program as a form of personal and social development.
Teatro Metaphora may in future continue the project since it fulfilled its aimed objectives.

10. Foreign language
and culture classes
Polish Culture & language course carried by Dariusz Sirko was the continuation of
regular language courses provided by Teatro Metaphora. The organization in collabo-
ration with Casa do Povo regularly conducts language classes for local people that are
enthusiastic about learning new language and keen on cultural exchange. Started with
regular English course, the organization thanks to the contributions of its EVS Erasmus
Plus participants have carried out already elementary courses on Italian, Russian, Ukra-
nian and Polish with many more to come. The participants though often with no skill to
properly teach their native language slowly learned themselves how to attend the matter
and ultimately along with teaching others solidified their own knowledge on their mother
tongue.
can art once again:
recycling doors
“In Teatro Metaphora I spent 1/3 of the time making doors for local bar in the center of
Câmara de Lobos. You should know that the doors are not random at all.🙂
First of all, the doors are made from recycling aluminum cans collected by volun-
teers and coworkers, and also by local community and bar workers around of the city
during previous half year. The association has its own secret method how to change
colorful trash in dinamic elements that actually remind mosaic in the final result. As you
can guess – it’s pretty hard work to get this amazing final effect! But we got it and we
can be pround – it’s gonna to stay in the city during years.
One thing is to spread recycling creative ideas around the local community and all of the
world using non-formal education methods.

“Around two months I worked regulary, one time per week in one of the basic school
in Câmara de Lobos. Since I had experience in handy-craft works and my hosting organ-
isation is connected with ecology and arts – it from start looked like a very good idea.
Since I knew I will work with adults, I prepared various ideas to experiment with
different materials and different techniques as well. For me, it was also a challenge to
make everyone comfortable with this kind of work. You need to know that my small
group icluded participants in various ages: the youngest one is 28, the oldest - more
than 60!” - writes Izabela Puk about her experience in blog Atlantic is calling.

Theater play:
Eco+aPOCALYPSE=ECOcalypse
According to her skills and education background, Polish volunteer Izabela Puk
was responsible to write a theater spectacle about invasive species. It took around one
month of preparation, invastigation and development the topic to could adapt serious
science theme and write a spectacle based on light idea and attractive form for the
youngests. She had consultations with Pedro Abreu, local environmental engineer. To
combine business with pleasure, she learned about invasive species during their trips
around the island and into the Laurissilva forest. Thank you to Lidia Jesus Canha for

13. PART I
( Sunny day, birds are singing in the background, sounds of waterfall or another sounds of nature)
(Suddenly, the light is getting darker, the sky rises with some clouds, every sounds calm down, mu-
sic of Dead Can Dance plays in the backround, lights, painted elements and four of invasive species
just appear one by one, walk around, present themselves and than sit around)
EUCALIPTUS
(screams in agressive and ironic way)
What a beautiful day to conquest the world!!!
(laughing in crazy way, like a Joker from „Batman” for example)
It’s a time to start our final battle. Look at this plants around: they are so silly, they don’t
suspect anything! (he looks aroud, shows to the audience endemic plants that are painted or
created like a part of scenery)
And this is a war! World War! Let’s turn the Laurissilva forest in our own kingdom!!!
(he screams, it should looks like a war’s leader speech to his warriors)
(than he calms down, sit and starts speak in bored way, like he is tired)
Plants of Laurissilva are too old to still exist: imagine, is an outstanding relict of past
times, it has milions years! People calculated that it born in the Tertiary period. I would
prefere to make the world much more modern!
(chorus: others invasive species repeat: „Yes! Let’s make the world a modern place! There is no
space for reliefs from the past! We wanna fight! Let’s start the war!)
I’m eucaliptus! King of all trees. King of destruction!!!....
Look at me: I’m the tallest, I’m the strongest. I will steal all of your water if I only want.
(he walks around, looks like handsom and powerfull, also selfimportand)
I will sterilize the ground around. Let’s make an erosion, because I’m a troublemaker! Don’t
ask me about the reason. I’ll do what I want, just because I’m the most important plant in
this forest... More space for me, more attention for me. I suppose to be the leader of the final
battle. I think – is clear. Let’s make a plan of the final plant’s extermination! Hahahahaha!
BIRD OF PARADISE FLOWER (STRELITZIA)
(passes around of the rest of plants, looks in flirty way around, sends kisses, comes to the eucalip-
tus that already shows his muscules, pushes him a bit away and she stands on his place)
My God... Really??? Why so agressive? You are maaaaaybe the strongest, the tallest, bla

bla bla (she speaks in ironic style). But I (pausa, she showing her beauty around), I’m just the
most beautiful one! Look at me: people and other creatures just admire me, my godness
shape and colors. I don’t really need to do anything – just to exist here. My only fault is
that I’m a foreigner here. But can it be my sin? (pausa; she makes innocent face).
Beautiful things are not only from Madeira, hahaha (she smiles cute and flirty).
I came from South Africa to conquere new lands, because I like adventures. I’m a travel-
er, so what?
(pausa, she looks at the audience)
All the time I hear some gossips from endemics plants that I’m so expansive here and
that I take its places to grown up to. Well... (she rolls her eyes)
The endemics plants are just jealous about my beauty, about human attention! I bring
a joy to human’s life, so they just forget that I’m one of the invasive alien species here.
So what? Imagine! Have they ever wanted to destroy me? Of course – not. I should be
your leader in this world war. Because this is my flower-power of forgetfulness. We will
conquer the world with peace and love.
banana passionfruit (MARACUJÁ-BANANA)
(laughs behind of the back of strelitzia, comes slowly to the middle)
Do you think that people really love you? They admire you, ok, true, you look niceee,
diffeeerent, preeeetty -but than...they are happy 3 seconds and than just come back to their
normal duties. That’s it! But guys, look at me, look at me now!!! (he/she presents itself) I’m
the special one, the real plant from the paradise! When someone tries me one time, will
never ever forget my taste and how special I’m...I have such a deep personality....I look like
a banana, but I hide inside of me a taste of passionfruit! I’m a freak of nature. And as a
freak I need some special conditions to alive. I grow up on another plants. Yes....Pleaseee,
don’t look at me in this way, people. (He/she makes funny faces to the audience). Some en-
demics plants already told me that I’m so selfish, think only about my own comfort and it’s
why I take regulary its space, its light... step by step my behaviours break its photosintesis
process... if you know what I mean...
(He/she says it with artificial sadness, rolls his/shes eyes, keeps quiet few seconds)
Is anyone there who knows what does it mean? (he/she asks the children, someone answers)
Yes, yes, exactly, hahahhaha. So, to be honest, endemics regulary die on grounds of me. But now
you can see how powerful I’m! I’m the real leader, the real fighter! Come with me. I’m enough
strong and expansive, but I’m also sweet and cuuuuuute. People from Madeira regulary sell my
fruits. So they need me here. It’s not my fault that I need this special conditions to grow up.
OPUNTIA (TABAIBEIRA)
(coughs to catch the atencion)
You all are so much focused on yourselfs. Can’t you see that your single power is not
14. enough? We need to fight in a group, but as a leader you should choose me, because I tie
in me all of your attributes.
Look how full of life are my leaves, I’m young and strong! Much more than you eucaliptus
– you’re so dry, you just know how to burn yourself in a fire. Go to hell! Look at me – I have
a special gun: thorns (he throws its weight around ). I can also survive in difficult conditions,
because I’m a cactus. And you? You, Strelitzia and Banana Passionfruit are just tooooo fragile.
One is pretty, one is tasty – so do I! I have both of your power: people admire my flowers and
like the taste of my fruits. You all, my friends (ironic tone of the voice), just can’t deal with me.
EUCALIPTUS
(very angry, he destroys some elements from the scenography, plucks some plants up; lights start to blink)
Enough!
(silence, everyone is like frozen when they see his agry mood, only the light still blinks)
See what connects us. We all are the plants that like fireeee!!! Let’s conquiste the island
with this weapon. Let’s burn the Laurissilva! Let’s make the real invasion and take all of
the space only for us!
(chorus of another invasive species in the background, repeat: only for us, us, ussssssss!!! only
for us, us, ussssssss!!! something like a war song – for examle we can use music of Perfect Circle
„Counting bodies like a sheeps to the rhythm of the war drums” first part of melody, without lyrics,
with drums, the lights start blinking and slowly the dark comes)
C U R T A I N
PART II(We can see all of the invasive species that are sitting around of the table, they have a big map of
Madeira Island, some of them whisper something to the ears of anothers, the light is darker, we can
feel the conspiration atmosphere)
EUCALIPTUS
Well... we already got the plan how to fight with Laurissilva in a smart way!
Let’s create modern society! We are new, young generation. Laurissilva is here thousands
of years! The plants of this strange forest are so conservative, nothing changed during
ages, so boring... And look.... the world around changed a lot. Let’s break them and their
ancient traditions.
OPUNTIA (TABAIBEIRA)
Yes, they are like old boring grandfathers. They need to retire – now is the time.
(chorus of another invasive species in the backround, repeat: now is our time, our time! )
BIRD OF PARADISE FLOWER (STRELITZIA)
It’s our time to posses this beautiful island in the middle of the ocean. We can be free here.
EUCALIPTUS
And we are agressive!
OPUNTIA (TABAIBEIRA)
Strong!
Banana Passionfruit (MARACUJÁ-BANANA)
Powerful!
BIRD OF PARADISE FLOWER (STRELITZIA)
Beautiful!
We are the masters of disaster!!! We are kings of fire! We will burn the world – but not
step by step.
Nooooo (chorus of another invasive species say it together)
Patience is not our way of being. Let’s make a great war, we will conquere all of the island
in the same time! Violently!!!
(chorus of another invasive species in the backround, repeat: we conquere the island in one day, in
one day, in one great day and we will write the history again!)
EUCALIPTUS
Yes, my friends. But let’s be even smarter. We can learn from another invasive species
how is their way of fight! Because I’m the greatest imperator – of course, it’s me who has
connections around the world! It’s meeee (he flexes his muscles). Let’s sit my friends, we

Hello Madeira! Everything is fine?
You want to know my special power? I came to Poland in 50., from Sovietic Russia - when
Poland was occupied by them, as a example of simple plant cultures as an animal’s food. But
I’m not a simple plant! I had ambitios, self respect – you know! And guess what? I escaped
easily from legal areas of cultivation. I’m very famous in Poland! Every year tv and newspa-
pers are talking about me! You know why? In summer, with high temperatures my leaves
have toxic and alergic properties. People are scared to meet me on their way. Roooaaaarr!!!
(chorus of another invasive species with admiration for the Sosnowsky’s hogweed)
Oh... wow!!!!
EUCALIPTUS
My congratulations Sir.
SOSNOWSKY’S HOGWEED
Many river valleys and roadsides are occupied by large stands of meeee. I’m difficult to
eradicate because my seeds remain viable for many years and my roots are difficult to
remove. And yes, when I meet a human being on my way.... I can damage their skin for
a long time, I make even third-degree burns. But I need a cooperation with the sun, in
Poland we have short summer. I think seriously to move to Madeira – here you can for-
ever spring, we can fight against the people every day! Learn from me!
Banana Passionfruit (MARACUJÁ-BANANA)
Thank you for the connection. You are inspire us. First Laurissilva than we’ll find the way
how to resolve the human problem....So many troubles with them, they are drop garbage
everywhere! They are much more invasive than we are!
(chorus of another invasive species, war drums music: So many troubles with them, so many trou-
bles; So many troubles with them, so many troubles)
EUCALIPTUS

Our plan is made. Let’s attack very suddenly....

sitting around...)
MASSAROCO
Oh, so good to be called a pride of Madeira. People love me, they appreciate that I’m
blooming in the dry rocks, I bring them joy as a “fountain” of blue and purple flowers.
Another plants love me because I’m a queen of beauty for them and animals love me too.
I’m offer a shadow to them in dry areas, coastal regions and rocky deserts, when I feel
so fine under the full sun. And I also feed butterflies and bees, I produce for them such
a sweet nectar. With my nectar they produce very good honey that is very healthy for
human beings and this way everyone is so happy. I like to bring a joy to the world!
OCOTEA FOETENS (TIL)
Dear Massaroco, the greatest queen of the Island, our pround – we are so happy to could
live together in our Laurissilva’s space! I’m rain tree, well known as a til. I’m very big tree,
I’m grown until 40 m, I’m always green! in the past people used my wood to build their
boats and discover the sea. I’m also rich in essential oils. I’m growing in area of low rain-
fall, it’s why I learn during the ages how to absorp water from the clouds and air. I’m not
like an eucaliptus which it’s to lazy to learn how to produce water, so just steals it from
ground and another plants. I’m making the climate more misterious, I like be surround-
ed by fog and clouds. I like humidity and it’s why I help to produce it.
(chorus of endemic plants: Bravo!!! Applaud)
OCOTEA FOETENS (TIL)
My fruits which look as barries are richable for the madeiran endemic bird called Columba
trocaz, I’m its favourite tree. As the bird is very shy and flighty – I give him shelter. We leave
together in symbiotic relationship, as a family. You see... We spread peace and love to the
world. We saved ancient values that modern world are forgetting now...
(endemic plants cry a bit...)
OCOTEA FOETENS (TIL)
Eh... But we still need to believe in human beings! I produce for them from 15 do 25
liters of steam every day. I’m very important source of sweet, drinkable water. Imagine
what will happen if I dissapear. In this small island surrounded by salty ocean’s water...
People need to take care about me! I’m green lungs of the island.

Thank you my brothers and my friends! You are such a good creatures. You are doing so
many good things for the ecosystem and people just forget it. They forget that we all are
a big family and we need to keep the balance, and now – they want money, they destroy
everything, they want to be great imperators.
(endemic plants are yearning...)
UVA-DA-SERRA
I’m unique kind of blueberry. I’m exist only here and in Porto Santo! I feel very comfort-
able to live close to the Til. I chose mountains to live there. You can meet me around 800
to 1700 meters above the sea level. I like to look at the world from the top! I’m tasty and
very healthy for the people, I’m full of antyoxidants. They like to made food from me -
for the preparation of jams, spirits, vinegar and liqueurs.
MASSAROCO
We all are more than friends! We are living together as brothers. All together we create
the unique type of subtropical forest found in areas with high humidity and relatively
stable, mild temperatures.
UVA-DA-SERRA
We need rain – and some foreigners are occupated our space, they just took our lands, didn’t

be legaly the unique symbol of the island. In this competition – I’m the winner, darling!

ENDEMIC PLANTS TOGETHER
(they are keeping their hands together, are standing in the circular shape, invasive are trying to sur-
round them slowly)
No! No! No!!! If we are together, you will not conquer us easily. Let’s cry aloud.
(invasive species laugh loudly and like crazy)

18. Theater play:
making costums and props
Polish volunteer Izabela Puk cooperates regulary, one time per week with o Clube
Eco-Escolas/Eco-Carmo da Escola Básica e Secundária do Carmo, in Câmara de Lobos.
Together with two teachers from eco club: prof. Carla Jardim and prof. Fátima Rodrigues,
in partnership with art teacher, prof. Filipe Oliveira and students, we created costumes and
props, the whole lot made from various recycling materials assembled by local people and
offered by them to the school.
Beside the theater and recycling ideas, the main idea was to involve young people
with fewer opportunities. Some of them come from difficult backgrounds and involving
them in activities such as set construction, making costumes and acting will occupy their
leisure times preventing them from following unhealthy habits. It will also increase their
participation in community and civic life.
In this project, the methodology of art therapy and theory and methodology of inter-
cultural communication were also included. Main goal of this project was to build unity,
harmony, peace and ecological awareness.
methodology:art therapy
handicraft,
& intercultural communication
Theater play:
Let’s practice!
Every single week, the students and the teacher Teresa Beijoca, responsible for the
theater club, met to practice, tried new theater methods of self-expression etc.
Similar as in the case of costums preparation, the teacher used of theatre techniques
to facilitate personal growth and promote mental health. It’s alternative method of work-
ing with emotions, reccomended specialy for children from difficult backgrounds.
The topic was chosen to spread knowledge about invasive species among chil-
dren because it’s not well-known yet and it’s a topic outside the school programme.
Non-formal education methods turn out to be perfect to increase knowledge and skills.
methodology:Theater,
drama therapy,
body-awareness
19. teatro Metaphora’s
recycling christmas gifts
“I prepared hand-made Christmas trees as gifts for local partners of Teatro Meta-
phora. The main idea was to create something from recycling materials, to support their
philosophy and raise awareness how much beautiful things can be made by our “trash”
by sharing. So here we are! We decided to continue with cans – the most recognizable
materials and kind of symbol of the association.
Look how cute things we can create when we decide to give a new life to trash, ropes,
used canes etc.! And safe our planet a bit in this way.
Every star is a wish. Behind every star is a little change. Don’t be afraid:
*Seja a mudança que deseja ver no mundo!*
*Be the change you wish to see in the world!*”

viva associaÇÃo:
another move into the local community
During 6 months, volunteer Izabela Puk started to cooperate with another local as-
sociation called Viva. Their main goal is to work on several areas of social action such
as integration of elder and retired people, summer school for children from families with
difficulties and creative way of spending free time. Thank you to Tracey Vieira and Énia
Reis for warm welcome, confidence and freedom in activities.
Via the association, Izabela was also invited to Casa do Farol, local restaurant, to
paint faces of their workers during the Halloween night.
methodology: face painting,
Intercultural communication,
body awarness
20. viva associaÇÃo:
personal refLections
Sometimes happiness is easy. Sometimes joy lies in small things. And moreover, some-
times good mood starts from a small motion. And this is what we actually experienced
in organisation called Viva. Small weekly activities booted up by two volunteers until now
activate children and show them how to spend time in creative way.
Last time, we came in a middle of the day, to paint children’s faces. Imagine how the
shyness – after few minutes – turned into sparkling eyes and wide smiles. It worked in
two ways: also our timidity just melted and we started suddenly to try our Portuguese
language skills to communicate better during the activities.
I believe that the communication trough art is one of the best intercultural
way to understand each others. You basicaly don’t need any language, may-
be except…body language. It’s a great lesson to understand how to express
yourself in many different ways.
We spent at that place short time, but the result of the meeting was really great! Few
minutes just turned children’s random day into a fairytale. And who doesn’t like to feel so
special like a hero from a fairytale? Sometimes happiness is easy and starts from a small
step. Small step that brings big changes. 🙂

feira das vontadas & I Gala Solidária de Natal
Volunteer Izabela Puk helped with handicraft workshop prepared specially for the
event called Feira das Vontades. It’s a kind of festival connected with International Day of
Volunteer where around 60 institutions from all of the island could present themself and
sell their hand-made articles to could earn money for their annual activities. In this way
she could also meet another NGOs members, integrate with local community and took
a look for their volunteering work.

If someone had told me few months ago that I would participate in the EVS project in Madeira
Islands, I wouldn’t believe it. At last, this is what happened for real!
I came to Funchal, a capital city of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago, for the very first time on the
3rd of June 2017. I have been picked up from the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, by José
Antonio, the President of Teatro Metaphora organization.
Since I read all the objectives of the program I exactly knew what to expect from the project. But as
things usually work a bit different from what is written on paper, to my surprise, the whole experience
turned out to be a way better then as it’s been described in the folder.
I had a chance to take part in multiple initiatives that took place during my EVS circle. The pro-
ject that I value most were Hospital for the little ones, Animate for ACTION and conducting Polish
language and Culture classes. These initiatives were very close to my ideal image of how we, as
an organization, can add up to bettering lives and expending horizons of local community. I believe
conducted happenings had a great impact on locals, especially on local youth.
Next to organizational responsibilities and duties I had a great opportunity in my spare time
to learn about, not only Madeira but also, whole Portugal. Spending sharply five months in this
increasable place gave me a fabulous chance to visit places that I could only dream of sightsee-
ing. I eagerly embraced Portuguese way of life and with a blazing sparkle in my eyes I observed
previously unknown to me beautiful habits and traditional events of Portuguese people. I became
a devoted fado listener, and Portuguese cuisine for sure changed my dietary routine. Portuguese
traditional dishes are simple but at the same time very flavourful. I had to love them, there was no
other option for me!
When it comes to a question whether I obtained
new and upgraded already possessed competences
I for sure must admit that I, indeed, did. The project
allowed me to expend my wings in PR and con-
tent management related skills. I learned how to
organize my time and divide it between scheduled
tasks. Next to this thanks to attending piano class-
es I excelled my song writing skills, something that
I aimed at as becoming a part of artistic organization.
Because Teatro Metaphora, although in recent years
more focused on ecological awareness, at heart its
truly a theatrical and performing arts organization.
To anyone who hesitates whether to take part in
EVS Erasmus Plus project... GO FOR IT!
It’ll be a great experience that you’ll treasure for
a very long time.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world”
- Mahatma Gandhi
In my case, everything always starts from a dream. I just felt strongly that I really want to ex-
perience life of being volunteer and based of listening to my gut - that it will something that brings
changes into my life forever. I applied during almost one year, looking for opportunities strongly
connected with my skills and interests. I found Teatro Metaphora while they didn’t have open re-
cruitment process for the Poles, but it changed during few months and I got a “green light” person-
aly from the President. It looked like destination, isn’t it? ;)
I came 3rd of Agust 2017 to Câmara de Lobos, cute and beautiful fisherman’s village which
became my new home and brought to me many challenges and adventures that increase my pro-
fessional skills as much as social abilities.
I got a chance to take a part in multiple initiatives during my EVS, try new fields, experiment with
new ways of artistic expression, enter to the local community as a foreigner but be in the same
line as locals. As a volunteer, I experienced how to be a teacher and a student in the same time.
I used art as a way of intercultural communication. Being a part of ecological project in a place so
strongly connected with nature as Madeira Island is, woke my own awarness up in this area and my
willingness to act with respect and choose ecologically responsible life-style. I feel also much more
connected with Europian Union values in our “diversity in unity”.
I already finished my volunteering service in Teatro Metaphora, but it didn’t finish inside of me
yet and every day the experience brings me new reflections and enriches me internally. I also be-
lieve that social network that I builded in Madeira and during my training courses in Portugal will
bring me new creative ideas and excelent opportunities to work on better future of Europe.
I would like to continiue my adventure with non-formal education methodology and find or cre-
ate totally new professional path that could connect all of my interests and expiriences untill now.
I feel I have a big debt of gratitude to the world and I need to pay it back.
If you think about volunteering, don’t wait for the right moment. The time is now! Don’t be afraid:
the world takes care of brave souls in special way :)
