"The power of youth
solidarity"
The European Solidarity Corps
VOLUNTEERING PROJECT
History Tellers
In early August 2021, I flew 3687 km and after 12 hours I landed off in the island of eternal spring – Madeira. I came to Funchal for
Individual Volunteer Project, which took place at the Academic Association of University of Madeira, my sending organization was
FRSP from Poland.
The main AAUMa purpose is to support the youth community of Madeira with skills and competencies that help them to cross the
challenges inherent to the geographical difficulties that they are subjected to.
HISTORY
TELLERS
A WALK THROUGH THE HISTORY
OF MADEIRA
The project is intended to present the culture, history and
heritage of Madeira through guided tours and other cultural
activities. So in the beginning we studied about the city, such as
main attractions and historical facts,
TOURS
When I gained knowledge about
Funchal I was able to perform the
tours as a guide.
THE HEART OF THE
CITY
My tour included the most interesting
place on the lower part of the town,
such as Jesuit's College, The City Hall,
the Old Town,
Fernão de Ornelas Street.
NEW EXPERIENCE
Every group of tourists was unique.
Madeira is most often visited by
tourists from Great Britain, Germany,
Sweden... but also Canada and Mexico.
The most interesting were the stories
and customs of the local community.
CITY HALL
ASSISTING THE VISITORS IN THE
SERVICE POINTS
Besides guiding tours, I often worked in City Hall to assist visitors,
promoting our trips and telling about the idea of the Association.
I researched also variety of articles, chapters and excerpts of
technical and scientific publications in the field of social sciences
and I performed translations of scientific documents
PLANTING TREES
I was visiting the Ecological
Park, which suffered from
annual fires
Support the Ecological Park of
Funchal
VOLUNTEERS
It is a whole group of volunteers
who helped
NEW FOREST
By doing such activities, we
could support nature and
rebuild the forest
NEW PLACES AND
FRIENDS
UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURES!
NEW PLACES
I had the opportunity to discover
new places on the island and be
closer to nature.
Discovering the Island
NATURE
Madeira's nature and
subtropical climate is unique.
FRIENDS
But the most important are
wonderful people from different
parts of Europe that I could
meet during the project
VOLUNTEERS TRAVEL
TOGETHER
Together with other volunteers, we
discovered the island, we did
kilometers on Madeira trails -
Levadas.
Local Traditions
THE FLOWER FESTIVAL
During my project, many attractions took place in Funchal.
I had the opportunity to see folk dances, flower exhibitions, and Fado
concerts.
I WILL MISS THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE I MET IN AAUMA AND IN FUNCHAL. IT WAS AN
AMAZING 7 MONTHS ON A SMALL ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN.
The project "The power of youth solidarity" was organized by
Academic Association of University of Madeira, Polish NGO
Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Przedsiębiorczego and
European Solidarity Corps
