Mendel's experiment was to understand genetic inheritance. When Mendel first began his work with pea plants, the scientific concept of heredity was rooted in the concept of blended inheritance, which held that parental traits were somehow mixed into offspring in the manner of different-colored plants, producing a result that was not quite the mother and not quite the father every time, but that clearly resembled both. Mendel was not interested in the appearance of his pea plants per se. He examined them in order to understand which characteristics could be passed on to future generations and exactly how this occurred at a functional level, even if he didn't have the literal tools to see what was occurring at the molecular level.
Mendel’s experiment consisted of cross breading 2 types of Pisum sativum (peas). The primary purpose of using this pea was due to the ability to self-fertilize and the ease of cross breading. He specifically was concentrated on the cross breeding of seven different features of the peas such as height, flower color, seed color and seed shape.

Swimming Pool - Attractive Nuisance Scenario:
John and Mary Cooke own a home in Anytown, Your State, with a private swimming pool in their backyard. Pursuant to local ordinances, their backyard is completely fenced by a five-foot wooden fence and the gate is kept closed with a latch at the top of the fence.
The Cookes live next door to the Andersons, a family with a two-year-old son, Joseph. Joseph loved water, and the Andersons had joined the Cookes swimming in the Cookes’ pool on numerous occasions. Although not yet “swimming” on his own, Joseph greatly enjoyed splashing in the pool and looked forward to playing with the Cookes’ dog, Rover. From the moment Joseph woke up in the morning until he went to bed at night, his favorite topics were “pool” and “dog.” Rover spent most of his days in the pool enclosure, relaxing on the pool deck or swimming. Joseph would become extremely excited anytime he heard Rover bark from next door.
One Saturday morning Joseph was playing on the screened-in porch of his home. He seemed quite content playing with his toys while his parents completed some odd jobs around the house. Once, when his mother checked on him, he was gazing toward the Cookes’ house and listening for Rover’s bark. His mother told Joseph that they could go swimming and visit Rover later in the day.
The parents lost track of time, each assuming that the other had been checking on Joseph. All of a sudden, the Andersons realized that neither one of them had checked on Joseph for a while. When they went to the screened-in porch Joseph was nowhere to be found and the outside screen door was slightly ajar. They called to Joseph, but he didn’t answer, even though he was usually very good about coming when called.
The Andersons immediately started looking outside for Joseph. He was not in the Andersons’ yard. At that moment, they noticed that the gate to the Cookes’ pool fence was wide open. Fearing the worst, they rushed through the gate calling for Joseph. Initially nothing appeared out of the ordinary except that Rover was dashing around the outside of the pool and barking as if to attract someone’s attention. Then they noticed the pool blanket was slightly pulled back from the side of the pool at the deep end.

Sanford University is a medium-sized university in the outskirts of Philadelphia. Formed
in 1966, it has grown steadily through the incorporation of additional colleges and
further education providers, but retains an emphasis on engineering, science and
technology.
Today, it numbers around 15,000 students and 2,000 staff.
As part of a five-year strategic plan, the university’s “Open Kingdom” project aims to
create a consistent user experience across the campus, including the provision of
wireless network access. This last issue became critical in the summer of 2012, when
the Students body insisted on wireless access for all residential buildings before starting
negotiations on 2013 rents.
“We’d traditionally viewed wired as good enough for everybody,” says John Patrick.

wired wasn’t good enough for our students. Wired wasn’t their typical network
experience. They expect the same experience on campus as they have at home.
Students wanted to do their computing anywhere, anyhow, on the go, inside the

Patrick and his team needed a solution in place before the January 2013 deadline.
The solution needs to provide wireless access coverage in the 7 buildings across
campus, four of them residential, and for the solution to provide a robust remote access
system (VPN) for faculty and staff.
The solution should not discriminate between devices; students would be free to use
smartphones, games consoles or tablets on the network, for work or play. However, the
network needed to differentiate between staff, students, conference visitors and guests,
granting the appropriate access to services. Ultimately, with thousands of users bringing
their own devices onto the network, it needed to maintain the security of the university’s
systems.

Windows Server Deployment Proposal
Overview
Each student will create a detailed, organized, unified technical solution given the scenario described below. The submission will be in a written format, with at least one diagram, and may include additional diagrams, charts or tables. The assignment is meant for students to enhance their mastery of the material and to provide a creative and realistic way in which to apply knowledge from this course.
Scenario
Worldwide Advertising, Inc. (referred to as “WAI”) has hired you as an IT consultant for implementing their Windows network infrastructure. WAI is a new advertising firm, and they are currently hiring staff, establishing two locations, and have a need to get their internal IT services configured. They do not yet have an IT staff, but when they do, the IT staff will take over all aspects of IT administration. You are required to supply WAI with a solution which describes the implementation and configuration of their core IT services. Cost is not a significant concern – WAI wishes to implement the “right” solution to fit their needs now and for the next 2-3 years.
There are several details about WAI which will have an impact on your choices:

WAI will start with 270 employees, in the following departments:
o
Executives (27 employees) – manage and run the company
o
Accounts and Sales Department (45 employees) – perform market research and maintain accounts
o
Creative, Media and Production Department (147 employees) – advertising
o
Human Resources and Finances (36 employees) – perform HR and financial duties
o
IT (15 employees) – manage IT for the company
o
WAI will have three sites, one in San Francisco, one in Washington DC, and one in New York. Most staff will be located in SF, with at least five person from each of the departments above located in DC and NY.

Networking equipment is already in place for all three sites. A secure tunnel (using IPSec) will be established between the three sites so that inter-site traffic will be securely tunneled over the Internet. You may make whatever other assumptions you wish about intra-and inter-site connectivity.

Security mechanisms (e.g., firewalls, intrusion detection) will be handled separately, and there is no need to describe them.
·
Some departments will want their data to remain private from other departments (e.g., Finances personnel will not want Production staff to see the company’s financial details). Your team may make assumptions about how data should be shared or kept private.
·
Assumptions can be made regarding any information not included here; all assumptions should be identified, however.

Search the news for articles addressing urban issues that fit the four criteria for “wicked” problems discussed in class. Your task for this assignment is to identify a real-life urban planning case study that illustrates the political, and often controversial, nature of the planning process. Case studies can be local or in another city, can relate to any of the functional areas of planning (e.g. transportation, housing, economic development, environmental planning, etc.), and may be project-specific or focused on larger comprehensive planning activities. Pick a case study for which you can find adequate details and information about the planning problem being addressed. You must find a minimum of three sources of information about your case study. All sources must be properly cited and referenced.
Write an essay that clearly addresses the following for the wicked problem you identified:

--Why are the causes of the problem uncertain?
--Why is there no obvious solution?

Organizations can do a lot more with their data if they understand it better than they do. While businesses continue to invest dollars in business intelligence (BI) and analytics tools, they aren't necessarily getting the information they need to improve business decision-making.

Notably, data visualizations tend to answer "what" questions, but they don't tend to explain the "why," or provide other contextual information. Data storytelling does exactly that.
"Data storytelling weaves data and visualizations into a narrative tailored to a specific audience in order to convey credibility in the analytical approach, confidence in the results, and a compelling set of insights that is actionable to the audience." said Ryan Fuller, general manager at Microsoft and former CEO and cofounder of enterprise analytics company VoloMetrix, in an interview. "The narrative is the key vehicle to convey insights, and the visualizations are important proof points to back up the narrative."
Executives, managers, and employees have always told stories as part of their everyday work experience, but they are increasingly being required to use data to support their points of view, claims, and recommendations. The danger, of course, is data can be tortured into saying almost anything.
"One of the biggest mistakes is trying to fit the data to the story, which often results in a jumbled narrative that doesn't arrive at a compelling conclusion," said Francois Ajenstat, VP of product development at BI and analytics solution provider

After speaking with experts in data science and analytics, we've developed the following four tips to help guide your data storytelling.
1. General Storytelling Rules Apply
Effective data storytelling is a lot like storytelling generally. The data story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. It should also include a thesis (or a hypothesis), supporting facts (data), a logical structure, and a compelling presentation. Yet, all too often, those responsible for analyzing data are unable to present it in a way that's meaningful to the audience.
"A common mistake is spending too much time on the technical aspect or methodology and not providing much creativity in pointing out how the data can help the business," said David Liebskind, VP of anal.
