The company’s sustainability report outlines Air Products and Chemicals Inc. commitment in upholding customer operations in order to grow, conserve and care (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015a).
Importance of Innovation in Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Vision, Mission, and Values
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. has been active in the Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) which aims at mitigation of greenhouse gas. However, the company has not taken active role in clean energy production. The capture of CO2 released during combustion of fossil fuel before it reaches the atmosphere is a key process (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015d). Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
Introduction
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. has prided itself over the years
as the provider of a variety of products including semiconductor
materials, the atmospheric gases, equipment and services, and
specialty gases. The company strives to meet its values
including an understanding for the customer’s needs, pursuit for
integrity, honesty and passion (Air Products and Chemicals,
Inc., 2015b). To meet the customer’s needs and the provision of
sustainable solutions and offering excellent service to its
customers Air Products and Chemicals Inc. needs to take an
innovative approach. The company’s sustainability report
outlines Air Products and Chemicals Inc. commitment in
upholding customer operations in order to grow, conserve and
care (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015a).
Importance of Innovation in Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
Vision, Mission, and Values
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. has been active in the Carbon
Capture and Sequestration (CCS) which aims at mitigation of
greenhouse gas. However, the company has not taken active role
in clean energy production. The capture of CO2 released during
3. combustion of fossil fuel before it reaches the atmosphere is a
key process (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015d). An
active participation however would make Air Products and
Chemicals Inc. efforts more pronounced. Besides, it’s in
adherence to Air Products and Chemicals Inc. goals of safety,
the new production would enhance the company’s Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR). The new production division
should take on active energy production by producing
facilitating technologies in geothermal, wind and solar energy
production.
Air Products new division mission statement will be;
development of sustainable and cost-effective technology, and
offering leadership in the transition towards a global adoption
of green energy.
Business Model for the New Division
The new business division at Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
needs to take the following business model:
Key Partners
The key partners to Air Products and Chemicals Inc. in the
renewable energy production industry include governments,
private sector investors and environment conscious organization
including UNEP which form the bulk of the target customer
base. Besides, Air Products and Chemicals Inc. need to develop
partnership with other key companies that have been advanced
research in different areas of renewable energy. For instance, jet
manufacturing companies such as GE, Rolls Royce and Pratt
Whitney have immense wealth on air turbine research (Turchi,
Ma, & Erbes, 2011). Such partnership may be crucial for the
development in wind energy.
Key Activities
The new division’s key activities will include research in
the most effective renewable energy production strategies.
Besides, the division will partner with clients to meet their
specific aspirations in the production of renewable energy.
Value Propositions
The values for the new division include safety and integrity in
4. the ethical and sustainable development of innovative renewable
energy ideas. In doing so, the division will aim at creating long-
term relationships that help to meet the global targets in
emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Customer Relationships
The customer relationship in the new division will guided
by one of the firms core values of excellence in service
delivery. Besides, the customer relations will strive to attain
efficiency both in the services and the products.
Key Resources
The key resources include skilled and experienced
manpower, infrastructural investment in plant and machinery
and research in the renewable energy sector. The intellectual
asset forms the very crucial resource that will ensure
competitiveness.
Distribution Channels
Since most of the energy projects are capital intensive, they will
involve a limited number of intermediaries. In most cases, the
business will be done directly between the client and the firm.
The direct contact will be crucial in understanding the needs of
the customers.
Customer Segments
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. new division will have
two major customer segments: governments and government
agencies, and the private sector development partners. The
global governments have had particular interest and concern on
global warming hence will appreciate efforts to develop
renewable energy technology. Private sector stakeholders also
seek to benefit from this venture both economically and through
a social responsiveness venture.
Cost Structure
The most important costs in the new division include the cost of
establishing a plant and machinery for the new department, the
cost of research in the field and marketing of the product. The
establishment of the plant is envisioned to be the most
5. expensive part of the venture. Activities towards researching the
feasible renewable energy technologies will also be costly.
Revenue Streams
The revenue streams include selling machinery and equipment
for renewable energy production. Besides, there will be revenue
from sale of energy where the company is bound to benefit from
partnerships with different companies. In addition, the firm will
be getting consultation from different clients and development
partners due to its expertise in the interrelated fields.
How the Division Addresses Customer Needs and Achieves
Competitive Advantage
The new division presents a unique opportunity in creating a
new niche that addresses the customer needs. Global warming
has been an issue of concern in the recent years. Most of the
global warming has been attributed to the rise in the emission of
greenhouse gases in the recent years (Pehnt, 2006). The alarm
on the global warming catastrophe has seen the world
community acclaim for better energy provision. In particular,
there has been call for the adoption of renewable energy.
Since Air Products has a reputation of offering reliable products
in different fields including energy, it would hence be a reliable
partner for companies seeking to venture in renewable energy.
Besides, its experience in gas for instance gives the company a
head-start in geothermal production.

Air Products and Chemicals Inc. renewable energy division
envisions becoming a global leader in the production of safe
and reliable energy. The division plans to endeavor in robust
research to meet the current and future needs of the industry. In
particular, the division takes pride in meeting and surpassing
the customer’s expectations. This is in line with the ever
evolving global needs that ensure competitiveness and
sustainability. Air Products and Chemicals Inc. plans to become
a reliable partner to enhancement of research and development
in renewable energy sector through collaboration with other
stakeholders in the sector.
6. How the Vision, Mission, and Value of the Renewable Energy
Division Align With the Company's Mission and Vision
The new division’s values, mission and vision are in alignment
with the current values, mission and vision of Air Products and
Chemicals Inc. For instance, the division is geared towards the
sustainability in the production of the renewable energy. Air
Products on the other hand is geared towards growth,
conservation and care. The new division hence is in support of

development partners for the betterment of the technology.
Partnerships have been central in Air Products operations. In
fact, part Air Products current mission includes the recognition
of partners possessing technologies beneficial to Air Products’
business aspect. This also includes partnership through purchase
or licensing of Air Products’ intellectual assets.
Being sensitive to the needs of the customer is another goal for
the renewable energy division. This includes the understanding
of the diversity of their needs and development of ways to meet
them. Air Products’ current mission includes development of
lasting relationships with the company’s customers and
communities.
The renewable energy division will be driven by valuing
integrity, safety and sustainability of its products and
operations. The values of Air Products currently include
understanding the customer needs, doing business with
integrity, and passionately exceeding the customer’s
expectations (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015c). These
values of understanding, integrity and honesty, and passion
blend with the renewable energy division’s aspirations.
Finally, the renewable energy division is in line with company’s
goals for developing technologies that are safe and geared
towards best performance. Renewable energy is considered a
safe energy option. This is in line with other existing goals such
as reduction of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. The division
hence is an expansion of the energy industry venture that the
7. company is has already ventured and has high stake.
