Editor's Notes
The demographic change that will happen with the massive retirement of the baby-boomers will create a vacuum of talent in all sectors of the economy in general, and in the healthcare field in particular. Not only because the industry will lose a large number of skilled workers, but the baby-boomer cohort will shift into the recipient side of the industry. This increases even more the need for skill and talent in healthcare. This creates a need for thinking ahead about training the next generation of healthcare providers.
The technological advancements also need to be taken in consideration. The future healthcare providers must be technologically very savvy, since most medical care is done with machineries. The introduction of the smartphone and the social media affected the way we communicate with each other both in our private and in our professional life. The escalating cost of healthcare at national level, created a funding problem for both the private insurance companies and for Medicare and Medicaid. A lot of things need to be changed to tackle the above issues.
The goals, are:
Each healthcare school/organization to adapt the delivery of health care education and training to meet the style and needs of the younger generation.
All healthcare organizations to create a cultural shift in the way the society cares for the sick both from financial and from humanistic point of view
All healthcare organizations to incorporate social media in their official forms of communication
1. Modifying and adapting the delivery of healthcare training by mixing “face to face” with online education, depending on specialty and needs.
2. Keeping up to date with the latest changes in medical technology by creating specialty training.
3. Adapting and/or creating a separate IT sector that focuses specifically on the needs of the healthcare industry; creating specialized curriculum to meet this need.
4. Introducing social media communication in the training curriculums
5. Introducing courses about medical ethics and responsibilities.
For the healthcare organizations to meet these goals and attain proposed objectives, there needs to be a change in discourse at industry level. It has to start from the top. Preparation for meeting the trends has to start with preparing the leaders. The first line of training has to start with educating those leaders that are in charge and have to power to create trends of thinking and apply change.
