Cyanide is a poisonous gas that inhibits ATP production in cells by blocking electron transport in the mitochondria. Without ATP production, neurons will be unable to maintain concentration gradients of ions like sodium and potassium across their membranes. As a result, the resting membrane potential of neurons exposed to cyanide will become depolarized.
