On the first day of October, markets opened flat and were seen clueless during the morning session. Following a volatile pattern,
markets extended gains in the late afternoon trade and ended up with a modest 0.3% gain.
Apollo Hospitals today touched its all time high at 780 (NSE) and closed over 5% up on the reports of a stake sell at a premium to the
current market price by a global private equity firm Apax partners LLP.
Shares of cement companies like ACC and Ambuja cement made new 52 week highs today at 1485 and 211 respectively, on the
hope of good demand post monsoon and reforms in infrastructure and reality sectors.
The HSBC manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI), that measures the business activity of India's factories but not its
utilities, remained steady at 52.8 in September as compared to 52.8 in August. The good part however is that, the index has remained
above 50, which divides growth and contraction, for more than three years.
The market breadth on the BSE closed in positive. Advancing and declining stocks were 1809 and 1087 respectively, while 127
scrips remained unmoved.
The BSE Sensex ended at 18823.91, up 61.17 points or 0.33%. The 30 share index touched a high and a low of 18838.54 and
18745.28 respectively. 16 stocks advanced against 14 declining ones on the benchmark index.
The S&P CNX Nifty gained 15.50 points or 0.27% to settle at 5718.80. The index touched high and low of 5722.95 and 5694.00
respectively. 27 stocks advanced against 23 declining ones on the index.

The BSE Mid-cap index moved up to 6665.85 and gained 0.89% while Small-cap index jumped up by 1.42% to 7117.36.
The broader BSE 500 index increased to 7241.46 (up 0.48%) and S&P CNX 500 index rose to 4522.95 (up 0.41%).
The volatility as denoted by INDIA VIX gained 1.11% at 16.34 from its previous close of 16.16 on Friday.

gainers.
