Through the ages, shoes have evolved from simple sandals made of leaves and vines to the diverse styles we see today. The document traces the history of shoes from prehistoric times when the first sandals emerged in ancient Egypt made of leather and papyrus, to the Middle Ages when heels were first worn by men and pointy shoes became popular. In modern times, shoes have become a fashion item with fancy, colorful styles and celebrities influencing design. Sports shoes in particular have had a large impact on footwear fashion starting in 1917 with the popular Converse basketball shoe. Overall, shoes have changed greatly over millennia from basic foot protection to items that reflect both comfort and fashion.

3. The Unique Duality
At its most basic, a shoe consists of a heal, a
toe cap, an insole and an outsole.
Its an item of footwear intended to protect
and comfort the human foot.
The shoe is also used to for fashion
purposes. They’re more fragile and is
intended to satisfy the wearer.

4. Origins of Footwear
- First Form: Sandals (Leaves, Twisted vines,
Woven palms)
- Arnold Research Cave, Missouri (Dry Leaves
moulded into cord) : 26.5 cm
- Otzi Shoes: Found 1991- Border of Austria and
Italy- Natural mummified human
Stone Age – died 3300 years before our era.

5. Ancient Times (1250BC – 476BC)
ANCIENT EGYPT
- First sandals emerged in Ancient Egypt.
- Made from leather, stitched with papyrus twine.
- First worn by and ancient pharaoh, Narmer.

- Long, went halfway up the knee, had laces.
- Worn by men and women, same design for both.
- Only different according to your position in
society.

- Heels were discovered, worn by men first.
- Pointy shoes

- Lacings, buttons, slip-on shoes and
straps.
-Kings in Europe wore high heels to
demonstrate their supremacy.
-King Louise XIV of France, Sun King,
popular for high heels fashion for men.

- Celebrities influenced footwear a lot.
