C4 - Prophet SAW As A Father & Grandfather
1. PROPHET (S.A.W.) AS A FATHER AND GRANDFATHER
He loved to kiss the children. Abu Hurairah said, “The Messenger (s.a.w.) kissed al-Hasan bin Ali
while al-Aqra’binHabisal-Tamimi wassittingbeside him.He said,“Ihave tenchildrenInever kissed
any of them”.The Messenger(s.a.w.) lookedathimand said, “Who doesn’t love will not be loved.”
[Narrated by Bukhari: 5997 & Muslim: 2318]
Aishah said, “A group of people came to the Messenger (s.a.w.) and said, “Do you kiss your kids?”
Muslims said, “Yes.” They said, “But we do not kiss our kids.” The Messenger (s.a.w.) then said, “I
afraid Allah had taken away the love from your hearts”. [Narrated by Muslim: 2317]
He also loved to bring his children with him. Shaddad said, “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) came
out to us for one of the nighttime prayers, and he was carrying Hasan or Husain. The Messenger of
Allah (s.a.w.) came forward and put him down, then he said the Takbir and started to pray. He
prostrated during his prayer, and made the prostration lengthy." My father said: "I raised my head
and sawthe childonthe back of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) while he was prostrating so I went
back to my prostration.Whenthe Messengerof Allah (s.a.w.) finished praying, the people said: "O
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.), you prostrated during the prayer for so long that we thought that
somethinghadhappenedorthatyouwere receivingarevelation.'He said:'No suchthinghappened.
But my son was riding on my back and I did not like to disturb him until he had enough.” [Narrated
by Nasa’ie: 1141 & Ahmad: 16033].
He also brought his granddaughter while praying as imam. Abu Qatadah said, “I saw the Prophet
(s.a.w.) leading people with prayer while holding Umamah, daughter of Abu al-Ash and Zainab,
daughter of Prophet (s.a.w.) on his shoulder. When he bowed down, he put her. When he got up
from prostration, he lifted her again”. [Narrated by Muslim: 543]
He treasuredthemdearlyand weptupontheirdeaths. Anas said, “We were (in funeral procession)
of one of the daughters of the Messenger (s.a.w.) (Ruqaiyah).” Anas said, “I saw his eyes shedding
tears.” [Narrated by Bukhari: 1285]
Anasalsosaid,“The Messenger(s.a.w.) came tohissonIbrahimwhenhe was breathing his last. The
eyes of Messenger (s.a.w.) started to shed tears. Abd al-Rahman bin Auf said to him, “You too O
Messengerof Allah(weep)?”.He said,“OIbn Auf,itismercy.”Then he beganto weepandsaid,“The
eyesare sheddingtearsandthe heartis grieved, butwe will notsayexceptwhat pleases our God. O
Ibrahim, indeed we are grieved by your departure”. [Narrated by Bukhari: 1303]
Eventhoughhe lovedthemdearlyandtenderly, buthe still verystraight in terms related to the law
of Allah. For example, Aishah said, “The Quraish were much worried about the case of a
Makhzumiyahwoman who had committed theft and wondered who should intercede for her with
Messengerof Allah (s.a.w.) (so that she would not get punished for her crime). Some said Usamah
binZaid(May Allahbe pleasedwithhim) washisbelovedandsohe maydare do so. So Usamah(May
Allahbe pleasedwithhim)spoke tohimaboutthatmatter andthe Prophet (s.a.w.) said to him, "Do
youintercede whenone of the legal punishmentsordainedbyAllahhasbeenvoilated?"Thenhe got
up and addressed the people saying, "The people before you were ruined because when a noble
personamongstthemcommitted theft, they would leave him, but if a weak person amongst them
committed theft, they would execute the legal punishment on him. By Allah, were Fatimah, the
2. daughterof Muhammad,to committhe theft,Iwouldhave cut off her hand." [Narrated by Bukhari:
3475 & Muslim: 1688]
The same happenedif theytriedtoconsume whathave beenforbadupon them. Abu Hurairah said,
“Dates used to be brought to Allah's Messenger ()ﷺ immediately after being plucked. Different
personswouldbringtheirdatestill abigheapcollected(infrontof the Prophet). Once Al-Hasan and
Al-Husain were playing with these dates. One of them took a date and put it in his mouth. Allah's
Messenger (s.a.w.) looked at him and took it out from his mouth and said, "Don't you know that
Muhammad's offspring do not eat what is given in charity?" [Narrated by Bukhari: 1485]
The Prophet(s.a.w.) alsoeducatedthemtofavourthe afterlifethancurrent life. Thauban said, “The
Prophet (s.a.w.) entered to Fatimah while I was with him. She took a gold necklace from her neck
and said,“Thisisa presentfromAbu Hasan (Ali)” and put it in her hand. Prophet (s.a.w.) then said,
“Are you happyif people sayFatimahbintMuhammadholdsalace of fire in her hand?” He then left
wihoutsitting.Fatimahthensoldthe necklace, boughtwiththe moneysome slavesand freed them.
Whenthe newsreachedthe ear of Prophet(s.a.w.),he said,“All praisestoAllah who saved Fatimah
from fire.” [Narrated by Baihaqi in Kubra: 7556]
Just as he tought them about endurance and patience. Ali said, “Fatima complained of what she
sufferedfrom the hand mill and from grinding, when she got the news that some slave girls of the
booty had been brought to Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.). She went to him to ask for a maid-servant,
but she could not find him, and told `Aisha of her need. When the Prophet (s.a.w.) came, Aisha
informed him of that. The Prophet (s.a.w.) came to our house when we had gone to our beds. (On
seeingthe Prophet) we weregoingtogetup, but he said, “Keepat yourplaces.”I feltthe coolnessof
the Prophet'sfeeton my chest. Then he said, "Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you
asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: Allahu Akbar for 34 times, and Alhamdulillah for 33
times, and SubhanAllah for 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested."
[Narrated by Bukhari: 3113 & Muslim: 2728]
