PROPHET (S.A.W.) ASA HUSBAND
Prophet(s.a.w.)fullyabode Allah’sinstruction: .“Andlive withthemhonourably.If youdislike them,
it maybe that youdislike athingandAllAhbringsthroughitagreat deal of good.” [al-Nisa’:19].
He alsosaid, “The bestof youis the bestto hiswife,andIam the bestof you to mywives.”
[NarratedbyTirmizi:3895 & IbnuMajah: 1977]
Andhe remindedthe adherentssaying,“Iadvise youtotake care of the women,fortheyare created
froma riband the most crookedportionof the ribis itsupperpart; if you try to straightenit,itwill
break,and if youleave it,itwill remaincrooked,soIurge youto take care of the women." [Narrated
by Bukhari:5186]
Aishahsaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)nevereverstroke withhishandanyof hiswivesof servants.”
[NarratedbyAhmad:26404]
He said, "Youshouldgive herfoodwhenyoueat,clothe herwhenyouclothe yourself,notstrike her
on the face,and do notrevile herorseparate fromherexceptinthe house".[Narratedbyal-
Arba’ah]
He had manywivesbutdividedtheirturnsfairly. He didn’tputthemunderthe same roof.Instead,
he gave eachof them herownhouse.Inalmosteverynight,he satwithall of themto entertain
themina house basedontheirturn, withcertainprivilage tothe house owner.Anassaid,“All the
wivesusedtogathereverynightinthe house of one where he hadto come (and staythat night).It
was (the nightwhenhe hadto stay) inthe house of 'Aishah.WhenZainabcame there,he (the
Prophet) stretchedhishandtowardsher(Zainab),whereuponshe ('A'isha) said:“ItisZainab”.He
thenwithdrewhishand.”[NarratedbyMuslim:1462]
He astonishinglyrespectedthemintheirhouses.Forexample,if he returnedfromhistripand
reachedMadinahat night,he waitedor sleptoutside because he didn’twanttodisturbhiswives. He
onlyenteredthe house whenthe daycame. He alsotoldthe companiontodo so. [Narratedby
Bukhari:1801]
Whenhe enteredthe house,he gave salamtohiswife.[NarratedbyAbuDaud:5096]
Whenhe wantedto travel,he pulledadraw amongthem.[NarratedbyBukhari:2661]
He treatedeachof themaccordingly.Forexample,withAishahwhowasstill ateenager, he lether
playedwithherfriends,joinedinwhenshe playedalone,oraccompaniedhertowatchsome play.
He twice invitedAishahtosprintagainsthiminwhichAishahwonthe firstandhisthe second.

Aishahalsosaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)gave abone and I ate the meatsthat still attachedtothe bone.
ThenI gave it back to himand he put hismouthinthe same where Iput mybit before. He alsogave
me a cup to drink andafterthat put hislipsonthe place where Iputmy lipson”.[Narratedby
Ahmad:24350]
He tookcare of hisappearance andodor (includingmouthwrench) forhiswives.Aishah wasasked
aboutwhat wasthe firstthingProphet(s.a.w.) alwaysdidwhenhe enterthe house.She said,“With
siwak(cleaninghismouth)”.[Muslim:253]
Aishahwasasked aboutwhat Prophet(s.a.w.) alwaysdidwhenhe atherhome.She said,“He was a
humanfrom mongotherhumans.He himself removedthe lice fromhisclothing,milkedhisgoats
and diddall hisworkhimself”.[NarratedbyAhmad:26194].
In anothernarration,“He mendedsandalsandpatchedgarmentsandsewed.”[NarratedbyBukhari
inMufrad: 539]
Aishahalsosaid,“He helpedhiswivesineverything(house chores).However,wheneverhe heard
the azan, he will lefteverythingandtopray.” [NarratedbyBukhari: 676]
He alsojoinedhiswivesinthe bath.Aishahsaid,“IbathedwithProphet(s.a.w.)fromasingle bucket,
and our handscrossingeachother(competingwhileplayingtogetthe water)”.[Narratedby
Bukhari:261]
Whenhe wantedto go out of any of theirhouses,he kissedthembefore he wentout.Aishahsaid,
“He alwayskissedhiswifebeforehe wentoutforpraying,withoutrenewinghiswudhu’”.[Narrted
by AbuDaud: 179]
He wasalso verygentlemantohiswiveswhentheirwere outside.Anassaid,“We returnedto
Madinahand I saw Prophet(s.a.w.) coveredherwithacloakwhile she wasbehindhim.The he
wouldsitbehindhiscamel andletSafiyaputherfeetonhiskneestoride (the camel).”[Narratedby
Bukhari:4211]
He wasproud to acknowlege hislovetohiswife,insteadof shame.Amrbinal-Ashonce askedhim,
“Who isthe dearestpersontoyou?”He said,“Aishah.”“Amongmen?”“Herfather.”“Then?”
“Umar.” Thenhe countedothernames”.[NarratedbyBukhari:3662 & Muslim:2384]
He didn’tletotherstocorrupt hisfaithto hiswives.The storyof Ifkwas a greatexample forthat.
He alsoconsultedwiththeminimportantmatters.Forexample, afterthe HudaibiyahTreatywas
agreedupon,Prophet(s.a.w.)toldthe MuslimstoslaughtertheirHadyuanimals andshave their
heads.Howevernoone move evenafterhe repeatedittrice.He thenaskedUmmuSalamahand she
said,“O Prophet,youknowwhatgetintothem.Go to your Hadyuanimal,slaughteritandthen
shave yourhead.If youdo that,thenpeople will do”.Andit’sindeedhappenedasshe said.

Theystickedtogetherinthe face of any kindof difficulties.Forexample,Aishahsaid,“Sometimeswe
passedthroughoutmonthswithouteatinganythingcooked.We livedonlyonwaterand dates”.
[NarratedbyMuslim:2972]
However,he neverneglectedtoeducate themtolove the eternal afterlifemore thanthistemporary
life.Qur’ansays,“OProphet!Sayto your wives:If youdesire the lifeof thisworld,anditsglitter,
thencome!I will make aprovisionforyouand setyoufree ina handsome manner(divorce).(28)
But if youdesire AllahandHisMessenger,andthe home of the Hereafter,thenverily,Allahhas
preparedforAl¬Muhsinat(good¬doers)amongstyouanenormousreward.(29) O wivesof the
Prophet!Whoeverof youcommitsanopenillegal sexual intercourse,the tormentforherwill be
doubled,andthatisevereasyfor Allah.(30) Andwhosoeverof youisobedienttoAllahandHis
Messenger,anddoesrighteousgooddeeds,We shall give her,herrewardtwice over,andWe have
preparedforherRizqanKarim(a noble provision -Paradise).(31) Owivesof the Prophet!Youare not
like anyotherwomen.If youkeepyourduty(toAllah),thenbe notsoftinspeech,lesthe inwhose
heartis a disease (of hypocrisy,orevil desireforadultery) shouldbe movedwithdesire,butspeakin
an honourable manner.(32) Andstayinyour houses,anddonot displayyourselveslike thatof the
timesof ignorance,andperformAs-Salat,andgive Zakâtand obeyAllahandHisMessenger.Allah
wishesonlytoremove Ar¬Rijs(evil deedsandsins) fromyou,Omembersof the family(of the
ProphetSAW),andto purifyyouwitha thoroughpurification.(33)”[al-Ahzab:28-33]
He alsoinvitedtheminqiyamullail,especiallyforwitir.Aishahsaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)prayedwhile I
was layingonhisbed.Whenhe wantto pray witr,he woke me up”. [NarratedbyBukhari: 512 &
Muslim:512]

C4 - Prophet SAW As A Husband

  • 1. PROPHET (S.A.W.) ASA HUSBAND Prophet(s.a.w.)fullyabode Allah’sinstruction: .“Andlive withthemhonourably.If youdislike them, it maybe that youdislike athingandAllAhbringsthroughitagreat deal of good.” [al-Nisa’:19]. He alsosaid, “The bestof youis the bestto hiswife,andIam the bestof you to mywives.” [NarratedbyTirmizi:3895 & IbnuMajah: 1977] Andhe remindedthe adherentssaying,“Iadvise youtotake care of the women,fortheyare created froma riband the most crookedportionof the ribis itsupperpart; if you try to straightenit,itwill break,and if youleave it,itwill remaincrooked,soIurge youto take care of the women." [Narrated by Bukhari:5186] Aishahsaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)nevereverstroke withhishandanyof hiswivesof servants.” [NarratedbyAhmad:26404] He said, "Youshouldgive herfoodwhenyoueat,clothe herwhenyouclothe yourself,notstrike her on the face,and do notrevile herorseparate fromherexceptinthe house".[Narratedbyal- Arba’ah] He had manywivesbutdividedtheirturnsfairly. He didn’tputthemunderthe same roof.Instead, he gave eachof them herownhouse.Inalmosteverynight,he satwithall of themto entertain themina house basedontheirturn, withcertainprivilage tothe house owner.Anassaid,“All the wivesusedtogathereverynightinthe house of one where he hadto come (and staythat night).It was (the nightwhenhe hadto stay) inthe house of 'Aishah.WhenZainabcame there,he (the Prophet) stretchedhishandtowardsher(Zainab),whereuponshe ('A'isha) said:“ItisZainab”.He thenwithdrewhishand.”[NarratedbyMuslim:1462] He astonishinglyrespectedthemintheirhouses.Forexample,if he returnedfromhistripand reachedMadinahat night,he waitedor sleptoutside because he didn’twanttodisturbhiswives. He onlyenteredthe house whenthe daycame. He alsotoldthe companiontodo so. [Narratedby Bukhari:1801] Whenhe enteredthe house,he gave salamtohiswife.[NarratedbyAbuDaud:5096] Whenhe wantedto travel,he pulledadraw amongthem.[NarratedbyBukhari:2661] He treatedeachof themaccordingly.Forexample,withAishahwhowasstill ateenager, he lether playedwithherfriends,joinedinwhenshe playedalone,oraccompaniedhertowatchsome play. He twice invitedAishahtosprintagainsthiminwhichAishahwonthe firstandhisthe second. [NarratedbyAhmad:26277] Aishahalsosaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)gave abone and I ate the meatsthat still attachedtothe bone. ThenI gave it back to himand he put hismouthinthe same where Iput mybit before. He alsogave me a cup to drink andafterthat put hislipsonthe place where Iputmy lipson”.[Narratedby Ahmad:24350]

He tookcare of hisappearance andodor (includingmouthwrench) forhiswives.Aishah wasasked aboutwhat wasthe firstthingProphet(s.a.w.) alwaysdidwhenhe enterthe house.She said,“With siwak(cleaninghismouth)”.[Muslim:253] Aishahwasasked aboutwhat Prophet(s.a.w.) alwaysdidwhenhe atherhome.She said,“He was a humanfrom mongotherhumans.He himself removedthe lice fromhisclothing,milkedhisgoats and diddall hisworkhimself”.[NarratedbyAhmad:26194]. In anothernarration,“He mendedsandalsandpatchedgarmentsandsewed.”[NarratedbyBukhari inMufrad: 539] Aishahalsosaid,“He helpedhiswivesineverything(house chores).However,wheneverhe heard the azan, he will lefteverythingandtopray.” [NarratedbyBukhari: 676] He alsojoinedhiswivesinthe bath.Aishahsaid,“IbathedwithProphet(s.a.w.)fromasingle bucket, and our handscrossingeachother(competingwhileplayingtogetthe water)”.[Narratedby Bukhari:261] Whenhe wantedto go out of any of theirhouses,he kissedthembefore he wentout.Aishahsaid, “He alwayskissedhiswifebeforehe wentoutforpraying,withoutrenewinghiswudhu’”.[Narrted by AbuDaud: 179] He wasalso verygentlemantohiswiveswhentheirwere outside.Anassaid,“We returnedto Madinahand I saw Prophet(s.a.w.) coveredherwithacloakwhile she wasbehindhim.The he wouldsitbehindhiscamel andletSafiyaputherfeetonhiskneestoride (the camel).”[Narratedby Bukhari:4211] He wasproud to acknowlege hislovetohiswife,insteadof shame.Amrbinal-Ashonce askedhim, “Who isthe dearestpersontoyou?”He said,“Aishah.”“Amongmen?”“Herfather.”“Then?” “Umar.” Thenhe countedothernames”.[NarratedbyBukhari:3662 & Muslim:2384] He didn’tletotherstocorrupt hisfaithto hiswives.The storyof Ifkwas a greatexample forthat. He alsoconsultedwiththeminimportantmatters.Forexample, afterthe HudaibiyahTreatywas agreedupon,Prophet(s.a.w.)toldthe MuslimstoslaughtertheirHadyuanimals andshave their heads.Howevernoone move evenafterhe repeatedittrice.He thenaskedUmmuSalamahand she said,“O Prophet,youknowwhatgetintothem.Go to your Hadyuanimal,slaughteritandthen shave yourhead.If youdo that,thenpeople will do”.Andit’sindeedhappenedasshe said. [NarratedbyAhmad:18910] Theystickedtogetherinthe face of any kindof difficulties.Forexample,Aishahsaid,“Sometimeswe passedthroughoutmonthswithouteatinganythingcooked.We livedonlyonwaterand dates”. [NarratedbyMuslim:2972] However,he neverneglectedtoeducate themtolove the eternal afterlifemore thanthistemporary life.Qur’ansays,“OProphet!Sayto your wives:If youdesire the lifeof thisworld,anditsglitter, thencome!I will make aprovisionforyouand setyoufree ina handsome manner(divorce).(28) But if youdesire AllahandHisMessenger,andthe home of the Hereafter,thenverily,Allahhas preparedforAl¬Muhsinat(good¬doers)amongstyouanenormousreward.(29) O wivesof the

Prophet!Whoeverof youcommitsanopenillegal sexual intercourse,the tormentforherwill be doubled,andthatisevereasyfor Allah.(30) Andwhosoeverof youisobedienttoAllahandHis Messenger,anddoesrighteousgooddeeds,We shall give her,herrewardtwice over,andWe have preparedforherRizqanKarim(a noble provision -Paradise).(31) Owivesof the Prophet!Youare not like anyotherwomen.If youkeepyourduty(toAllah),thenbe notsoftinspeech,lesthe inwhose heartis a disease (of hypocrisy,orevil desireforadultery) shouldbe movedwithdesire,butspeakin an honourable manner.(32) Andstayinyour houses,anddonot displayyourselveslike thatof the timesof ignorance,andperformAs-Salat,andgive Zakâtand obeyAllahandHisMessenger.Allah wishesonlytoremove Ar¬Rijs(evil deedsandsins) fromyou,Omembersof the family(of the ProphetSAW),andto purifyyouwitha thoroughpurification.(33)”[al-Ahzab:28-33] He alsoinvitedtheminqiyamullail,especiallyforwitir.Aishahsaid,“Prophet(s.a.w.)prayedwhile I was layingonhisbed.Whenhe wantto pray witr,he woke me up”.
