2. PART TIME WORK FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENT, IT IS A NECESSITIES OR LUXURIES
World have been changes a bits by bits. This matter also effect on lots of people
regardless they are old mans, university students, secondary students or even a child can
feel the changes of the new world. University student are the one who feels the most of the
changes. In restaurant, laundry shop, or even in a mall we sometimes will found or even
know that the manger employ the part time worker especially university students.
Assignment, part time work, examination and lecturer class is synonym to university
students nowadays. Without this fourth element, university student cannot complete their
necessities. Back on early age of 70’s and 80’s, the number of university student involve in
part time work is lower than full time worker. This different from nowadays, most of
undergraduate student work to support their expenses in daily life in university. To have a
part time work is something that important for university student if they want to cope the
increasing of the price of goods and gain more knowledge in workplace.
Contrary from the explanation of part time work is that, university student should
only focus on their study only because the purpose and aim of university student when first
come to university. Part time work is something that will affect university student study and
also their life. “If you’re a full-time student, it will be just that: full-time, so be realistic. You
don’t want to look back and see that you allowed your grades to suffer as a consequence of
a part-time job.” (Tandon, 2011). From the statement above, shows that if we are full time
student than we must be a full time student which only focuses on study rather than take
part in part time works. University student should focus more to their study if they want to
get or achieve their goals. To get a better job in future is becomes first objective when
come to university. Maybe you can ask any students, “why they come to university?” most
of university students will answer “to get better job in future”. As a result, some university
students are willing to fulfil their parents’ ambitions. “Some parents desire for their children
to fulfil their own unrealized ambitions, just as psychologists have long theorized, according
to a new first-of-its-kind study.” (Bushman, 2013). This shows that most of parents allow
their children to continue their study in university just to fulfil their (parents) ambitions. Most
of parent wanted to become university student and some of them can’t fulfil their ambitions.
This is one way for them to redeem the broken dreams.
In contrast, from part time work university students can gain more knowledge and
experiences. Nowadays most of managers would like to employ university student that have
experiences in especially in workplace. Experiences are most important for university
student when they come to the real workplace. Despite, ever semester we will be teach by

3. lecturer about the study of environment in workplace. “Three studies discussed other
positive employment outcomes of part-time study as well as higher earnings, such as
increased career opportunities, job or career changes, increased job satisfaction, and
promotion (Brennan et al. 1999, Feinstein et al. 2007, Woodley and Wilson, 2002).” From
the statement above show that part time work can give a good impact to university student
before they become the real full time workers. Knowledge that we get from workplace is
somehow is different from our textbook. Even tough, most of university try to implement
workplace situation in the lecturer class, such as study of “Organizational Behavior” that
teach students what happen in workplaces. This is not enough for university students to
understand how they can work in workplace situation.
Moreover, part time work is important to university student because of the increasing
of price of goods nowadays. The increasing of price of goods effect on university student life
in many ways, for example, the price of textbook, foods and university fees. “Seven out of
ten undergraduates who took the survey reported they had not purchased one or more
textbooks because the cost was too high.” (PIRGs, 2011). From the statements above shows
that most of university students in most of university regardless university in USA or even in
our country, university in Malaysia also have face this problem which some of student can’t
afford to buy textbooks. Part time work is a solution for these problems, which student can
have their own money and affordable to buy textbook and pay the university fee by
themselves besides hoping only form their parents’ money. As a result from the increases of
textbooks, university student also have to confront problem on the high price of university
fees. “I am paying for my entire college education, so adding the high price of textbooks is
really hard for me financially,” commented one Indiana University junior’. (PIRGs, 2011).
From the statement we know that most of university students need to pay the university fee
meanwhile have to save their money to buy the textbook that most higher than their
scholarship. Sometime, university may charge higher fee to university student who can’t pay
the fee on the first of semester, this will affects the students emotion and will effect on their
result.
As a conclusion, back from the topic question “part time work for university student,
it is a necessities or luxuries”, we now can says that part time work is really a necessities for
university student as one of their way to get money and also gain more knowledge from
workplace besides knowledge from the textbook only. But this matter is based on university
student themselves, either they want to participant the part time work or they just wanted
to focus on their study. But the best to say is, not all university students are from the rich
and affordable family, with this part time work, at least can reduce the student problems.
