The history of the horror genre spans from 1890 to present day. Early European films from 1890-1930 had low budgets and introduced vampire films. The Wall Street crash of 1929 halted film production worldwide. In the 1930s, Universal Studios created the gothic horror subgenre including Frankenstein and Dracula, while Warner Brothers made wax museums films. The 1940s-1950s saw many sequels and the introduction of alien films, while the 1950s brought color films and psychological thrillers. Modern horrors from the 1980s onward, such as Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street, have been remade and found great box office success with new technologies enabling more intense scares.
