EU Regional action on animal
disease eradication in the Western

2. A Multi Country cooperation project under
Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA
II) with a budget of 1,5 million euro is
planned to start 1 January 2020.

SANTE/2018-G-046 EU Regional action on
animal disease eradication in the Western
Balkans.
The main goal of this project is to ensure
capacity building of the Veterinary
authorities.

3. Overall objectives of the project
• To improve the access of agriculture products from
the Western Balkans to the internal market and to
non-EU countries markets.
• To control and eradicate important animal diseases
in the Western Balkans, in particular those diseases
that continue to be a threat to EU Member States.
• To establish a solid cross border cooperation
platform with the veterinary services in neighbour
countries and EU Member States.

4. The export potential of the
Western Balkans to the EU today
is high and there are potential
areas to develop.
As candidate countries for EU
membership, the Western Balkans
are going to form part of the EU
internal market.

5. The actions are expected to
generate the following results:
Ensure that the Western Balkan
countries are ready for accession to
the EU from a sanitary and
phytosanitary (SPS) perspective.

Ensure capacity building of the
veterinary services including the
laboratories of the relevant IPA II
beneficiary countries.

7. • Ensure that it becomes possible
to achieve official disease free
status recognised by the OIE.

8. • Ensure that the region has
developed a closely integrated
cooperation between the
veterinary authorities in their
neighbouring countries, both in
the Western Balkans and with
the EU.

9. • If the Western Balkans have a
different animal health status to
the rest of the EU no safely trade
(internally) can take place with
the other parts of the EU - the
internal market thereby cannot
operate as it should.
