1.
2. Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia,
however, it is the male sports (such as AFL, NRL and
the A-League) which dominate the attention of
the media
Female sports such as netball do not receive the
same level of media attention
The participation rate of netball is continually
increasing yet it is neglected in the media
3. Elizabeth Watson is a professional netballer, playing
for the Melbourne Vixens
She has currently been selected for the Australian
Diamonds squad in the 2014 Commonwealth
Games
There is a lack of media focus on female sporting
pathways and we hope to share Elizabeth’s
success beginning from grassroots level right
through to the international stage
4. Our story will enrich Melbourne’s sporting culture
and relate to many Melbournians
Mothers and fathers will relive the days of watching
their children play at a grassroots level on weekend
mornings
Children will see Elizabeth’s journey and be inspired
to take up sport or persist with their current sport
Melbournian sport lovers always want to hear how
professionals got to where they are and the
difficulties they have faced along the way
6. She had high standards to live up to
Her older brother Matthew currently plays for
Carlton in the AFL
Her uncle Steve Alessio, played for Essendon in the
1990 decade and was part of their 2000
premiership team
Just recently turning 20 years old, Liz definitely has a
vast array of achievements in female sport to her
name
7. Beginning her netball journey as a youngster at
Park Panthers Central Lynx Netball Club, Liz began
playing as an attacker and as she progressed
began to play through the mid court
Just recently Liz was promoted to the Melbourne
Vixens squad in the ANZ Championship as well as
being selected for the Australian Diamonds Squad
for the upcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games
Liz is a classic example of where hard work and
dedication pay off
8. The significance of playing for the Melbourne
Vixens in such a dominant position at such a young
age, and further to that, being selected for the
Australian Diamonds squad just weeks after first
playing for the Vixens, is indescribable
It is a rare achievement and an even rarer
pathway for a young player
In a sport that firstly, only has 12 teams in the Trans-
Tasman competition, and secondly, is still in its
amateur footsteps in comparison to other
Australian elite sporting codes, it is a difficult
position to find oneself in
9. Sport is a large factor in the community
connectivity, especially in Melbourne
The Olympic Park stadia presents a dedication by the
Australian and Victorian government to sport, and
the commitment is only reciprocated by the fans of
over 5 different sporting codes through attendance
on a seasonal basis
Netball is slowly becoming a sport with increasingly
high attendance statistics, and is a large contributing
factor to the growing levels of participation in netball
at the grassroots level
Advertising, community visits and clinics by elite
players, and attending matches are all critical
elements to the connectivity between a city and its
people
10. It is the aura and feeling that the Olympic Park
stadia in Melbourne creates, that develops that
relationship
The people support their city equally as much as
they support their team
11. The fact that there are so many clubs situated in
Melbourne, it not only creates that aura and
feeling of legends through the development of
Olympic Park, however it also prevents the city
being known solely for one team, club and code
Other sporting codes are known worldwide for
one, potentially two, teams in one code, which
could potentially prevent Melbourne from
establishing our codes and clubs on an
international scale
12. It makes it difficult for one club to stand out
through advertising and media outlets unless their
on-field performances are either outstanding or
incredibly bad
For netball, grassroots participation levels are
growing, however funding and advertising are still
in need of development
The stadia available for elite netball could be
improved, however stadiums to develop grassroots
further needs to be continually funded to aid in the
development of the sport
13. Working title:
The journey from amateur to professional sport: an
insight into a young netballer’s career
Short synopsis:
The basis of our documentary episode is to track
the path in which a young girl must take in order to
be considered a professional in a highly
competitive sporting career. It was important for us
to document whether living in Melbourne, i.e. the
sporting capital of Australia, has had a positive
influence in the growth of Elizabeth Watson. From
playing in an amateur league to having the
passion to pursue a career in women’s sport.
14. Main topic:
Elizabeth Watson, an up and coming netballer in
Melbourne, who has had the passion to pursue her
career and broaden her horizons in women’s sport
It is important to have a focus on women’s sport
throughout the episode but also to document the
difference between men and women’s sport
We also will be focusing on the idea of sport in
Melbourne as well and drawing back to the fact that
Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia
We also found it was important to get a broad idea of
girls playing netball and the paths in which they take i.e.
Continuing to play for fun or pursuing a career. We aim
to interview younger girls playing netball from various
age groups to include in the study
15. We aim to document our documentary with
the assistance of the blog
The blog prototype can be found here:
http://assignment02mmj.wordpress.com
The blog would further document and profile
the people interviewed in the episode
We also will use the blog to upload additional
footage both still and video that we aren’t
able to include in the episode
This blog will then be linked to our individual
twitter accounts so that we have the ability to
further access a broader audience
16. Young people between the ages of 10-26 who are
interested in sport, particularly netball. This is due to the
fact that we are aiming to document the path in which
a young person must take in order to successfully play
sport professionally.
Due to the fact that we will be interviewing various
people, have footage of various netballers and also still
shots, it would be ideal for us to link the web
documentary to a blog.
This would then be shared amongst each of our group
members personal twitter accounts so that we would
be able to reach a wide variety of audience. (The idea
of the blog is yet to be agreed upon amongst all
members, so is just currently a proposal.)
17. We each are interested in sport so heading
towards a sport idea for our documentary meant
sharing the roles amongst us was easy to decide
We’ve set out a plan of what we aim to achieve
and how best we are able to achieve it.
Because we were able to choose our own group
for the assignment was a huge positive, as we
have each worked with one another before and
know that we are able to work well together
We have set out a timeline and agreed amongst
the three of us the role in which we can each play
in order to successfully submit the assignment
