SPECIAL XI FOOTBALL CLUB
Dear Business Owner,
Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to the Special XI Football Club. The Special XI
Football Club is in its 85th season and will be continuing a tradition of developing skills of
young boys and plans to field competitive teams that enjoy success at the highest level
throughout our community.
As the club begins the new season, it is fair to say that the Special XI Football Club will once
again have a positive impact on the lives of the Edendale township area youth. This season
we are pleading to local businesses such as yours to help in providing the necessary
fundamental playing kit and training equipment for these dedicated players to be able to
fully participate in the Edendale Football Association League for the coming year. The only
way this objective can be met is by creating team and club sponsorship opportunities.
The Special XI Soccer Club is guided by dedicated volunteers led by our chairman Mr. L.S.
Vilakazi. Our sources of revenue come from donations received from generous individuals
and businesses; and contributions from the club’s volunteers (coaches & chairman). These
contributions unfortunately don’t fully cover the needs/fundamentals that the club is
sometimes faced with or requires such as referee fees, the necessary playing and training
equipment, awards and tournament entry fees. On the upside, we are not faced with
transportation fees as all of our football matches take place in one or two venues
throughout the entire season. These two stadia/venues are relatively close (walking
distance) to the players homes/residences. In order to make this experience/dream a
reality, we are appealing/pleading to businesses, family and friends to help our dreams turn
into this reality by becoming a team or club sponsor.
We are open to any form of sponsorship that you may be willing to provide as it would be
greatly appreciated.
Anyone interested in supporting the club should contact Sanele Vilakazi, the club’s liaison
officer whose contact details are attached below.

Introduction
Soccer is viewed by many as a major sporting event in the world. The game of football has
resulted to skills development in many nations across the globe.Besides, sport in general and
football in particular have emerged as a single unifying factor, even in the moment of
political, ethical and socio-religious tension and feuds. Nations across the world have united
behind this game. Football has bridged the racial divide and brought people of other nations
into a union of oneness.
Most youths are ready to defy some of the challenges prevailing in the world today such as
unemployment and economic hardship, which has reduced them to the level of desperation.
Most of them have given up hope and have buried their talents and indulge in activities such
as drug abuse, gangsterism and banditry. It can therefore not be argued that idleness breeds
crime and other numerous malpractices that can only lead to the destruction of individuals
and their communities.
In the context of Pietermaritzburg, there are numerous challenges which are still predominant
in most of its townships such as Ashdown, Imbali, Sobantu, Edendale, Sweetwaters etc. This
is because the desire and zeal to conquer and be number one has unfortunately not been
matched with opportunities and facilities to nurture their skills and talents. It is in this context
that the Special XI Football Club was formed, to transform the lives of building talents of
Edendale.
Goal and rationale
The future of every country and its related society lies in the youthful population. Investing in
youths entails building a solid foundation for future leaders by maximizing their potentials.
The club gives young people a chance of making it in life through football. The founders of
the club believe that young people are rough diamonds whom if well polished shall shine for
the whole of humanity.
The goal of the football club is to offer an opportunity for maximum development of talent in
youth through training and nurturing of their talents in football. Most of the players within the
team have been identified through township competitions and street playing arenas.

Team colours
The original team colours were brown and gold but as time went on and with a constant lack
of funding/sponsorship the team has been reduced to wearing any colour of kit that we had at
our disposal or was given to the club.
Past sponsorships
The club was sponsored by the late Mr. Graham Volans (of Volans dry cleaners) and his
family. The sponsorship deal soon ended after his untimely passing. Other past contributors
to the team were the then Edendale Ward Councillor Dlamini who sponsored the club with a
playing kit and some of our founding directors who did the same

The community
• The club’s training activities shall reinforce the spirit of friendship and unity amongst
young people who constitute a very active and consequently very volatile section of
the population
• The training activities shall be welcomed by the local authorities as an antidote
against the growing rate of drug abuse
• Even if none of the above occurs, we would have succeeded in the physical and moral
education of our young people and given them enough reason to dream, which dreams
they may realize some day with or without us. This is what we call success.
Needs of the football club
• Training material: football boots, jerseys, training kits, cones, soccer socks, shin
guards, footballs, training bibs, first aid medical facilities, nets and all other sports
