Airfield safety in design process
Airfield (airside) safety is important when airport is in operation
Safety management systems in place
But airside safety starts already during design and construction phase:

Master Plan
Operational safety taken into account at an early stage.
Optimise capacity but maintain safety
Plan for the correct Safety areas and obstacle free zones (RESA, Take off and
landing surfaces, Inner horizontal, etc.)
In Master Plans we plan cross taxiways and RETs layouts such that the risk of
Runway Incursions is minimized.
Limit surface water close to a runways to reduce bird nesting and roosting at the
airfield. Minimize bird hazards.

A-SMGCS
Advanced Surface mMovement Guidance Control System
A system which provides the guidance to prevent accidental entrance of aircrafts on
the ground to the runway and to keep safe distance between them at the airports with
heavy air traffic or in poor visibility conditions.
This system intends to intensify collision prevention among aircrafts and vehicles on
the ground and to improve the safety of surface movement and the efficiency of the air
traffic at the airports which deals with increase of the air traffic in the future.

Site Supervision
Focus on operational safety during construction:
Examples:
Aeronautical studies
RWY rehabs on single RWY airports
Dust Control
FOD management
Runway and taxiway incursion/area infringement control
Off peak closures of RWYs and TWYs – inspections and handover procedures

Runway incursions
What is a Runway Incursion?
Any occurrence at an aerodrome involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft,
vehicle or person on the protected area of a surface designated for the landing and
take off of aircraft.
Number of serious incursions (cat A and B) decreasing
