3. Prior Learning Assessment If you already have experience in the field of Human Services, you may be able to have that experience count as your first internship. Please contact Eric Comstock, Program Chair, to discuss your experience and to see if you qualify for a Prior Learning Assessment. You can contact Mr. Comstock at (317) 921-4426 or ecomstoc@ivytech.edu. 3
4. What Prerequisite Courses are Needed to Enroll in Internship I? Before considering an internship, you MUST have completed HUMS 101, HUMS 102, and HUMS 103. You may take HUMS 101 and HUMS 102 in the same semester, and we encourage you to do so, as these are courses required to take HUMS 103. Remember, an internship is not the same as volunteering for a community service experience. You are utilizing your internship experience to practice human services skills learned in the prerequisite courses. 4
5. Getting Started Four Questions to Ask Yourself… What kind of population do I want to work with? (i.e. children, teens, adults, elderly, etc.) What kind of problems do I want to help address? (i.e. homeless, depression, substance abuse, etc.) What days/times do I have available for my internship? How far do I want to travel for my internship? Your answers will help you pick the best agency for your first internship. 5
6. Where Can I Do My Internship? Start with the list of “Approved Internship Sites” available in the “Files” section in the Human Services Group on Campus Connect. If the place where you want to do your internship is not listed, then you will need to get your site approved by Lynn Shaw. Once approved, you will then need to have your agency sign an Agreement of Affiliation with Ivy Tech Community College. 6
7. How Many Hours Are Required for My Internship? All Human Services majors get the opportunity to complete two (2) internships. Each internship is 160 hours. In a typical 16-week semester, this equates to 10 hours a week. If 10 hours a week is too much for you, we can let you start your internship two weeks early and allow you 30 days extra at the end of the semester. You will need Lynn Shaw’s permission in order to start early and end later. 7
8. How Do I Get The Internship? Once you know where you would like to do your internship (either from the approved list or by having your site approved by Lynn Shaw), you will need to do the following: Call the agency and ask to speak with the person in charge of internships. Ask if the agency is taking interns and ask to schedule an interview. Make sure your resume is ready. The internship site may ask you to email or fax a copy. Some will require that you bring a copy to the interview. Please be advised that some internship sites require background checks and/or drug tests before you are officially offered the internship. 8
9. Need Help With Your Resume?Need Help Preparing for the Interview? Visit Ivy Tech’s Career Services Department located at the corner of 28th and Illinois Streets on the Main campus. You do not need an appointment to work on a resume. The staff is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To schedule a mock interview session with Career Services, call 317-921-4881. These are FREE services to Ivy Tech students! 9
10. What Are My Internship Duties? You are asked to discuss your days, hours, and duties with your internship site supervisor. What you do and when you do it is negotiated between you and the internship site. Lynn Shaw can assist you with this process. Please describe your expected duties on the “Job Duties”, Form D of the Internship Packet. If Lynn Shaw has any questions or concerns about your duties, she will contact you. 10
11. I Have a Site and Duties – Next Step? Complete Forms A, B, C, and D in the “Internship I Application”. These forms can be found in the “Files” section of the Human Services Group on Campus Connect. Email, fax, mail, or drop off your application to Lynn Shaw in NMC 224C. Lynn Shaw will then grant you permission for you to register for HUMS 201 – Internship I. 11
12. When Do I Attend Class for Internship I? When your application is accepted and you are enrolled in the Internship class, Lynn Shaw will send you an email with class days/times and other important information. The Internship class is a “hybrid” class. This means it uses a combination of traditional and online formats. Internship I meets only five (5) times in a face-to-face traditional format during Fall and Spring semesters, and three (3) times in the Summer. The meetings are mandatory and typically held Fridays. The Internship class uses Blackboard between traditional class meetings for ongoing discussions and other activity. Like other classes you have taken, there will be a textbook, reading assignments, papers and presentations. During the first class meeting, Lynn Shaw will review your syllabus, class assignments, due dates, paperwork, forms and other requirements. 12
13. What If I Want to Change My Site? Occasionally, a site placement does not serve you or the agency. Fortunately, that has rarely occurred as many students prior to your placement have represented Ivy Tech and our program well. The internship experience is to give you an introduction to the varied human services professions. Even if the site you choose does not appeal to you by midterm, you will need to complete your obligations to the agency. The experience you have even in working through difficulties will serve you later as a professional. You may contact Lynn Shaw for a consultation about your site if things do not progress. Site supervisors also consult with Lynn Shaw who provide progress updates. Please do not stop going to an internship site without consulting with Lynn Shaw and the internship site supervisor. You are representing the Human Services Program and other students who may choose your site location in the future. 13
14. After My Hours Are Completed, What Happens? Congratulations! You have completed the first of two internship requirements for graduation. Celebrate! You will need to have your site supervisor verify your hours and complete the final evaluation. These forms are available under the “Course Documents” tab on your Blackboard course. The forms with original signatures must be turned into Lynn Shaw for your final grade determination. If you complete your hours prior to the end of the semester, you are still assessed points for discussion board questions, journal summaries, and other activity. Your class participation is of value to you and your classmates. 14
15. Questions? If you still have questions regarding your first internship experience, please contact the Internship Coordinator, Lynn Shaw at 317-921-4743 or email her at dlshaw@ivytech.edu. 15 "Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community." --Anthony D’Angelo
