Web Basics <ul><li>The Web is the Gutenberg press of our time. </li></ul><ul><li>It’s always changing, growing. </li></ul><ul><li>The Internet is a collection of computers that are connected to each other. A network of networks. The Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet. </li></ul>
  2. 2. Digital Files <ul><li>Byte: A measurement for digital information </li></ul><ul><li>Kilobyte: 1,000 bytes </li></ul><ul><li>Megabyte: 1 million bytes </li></ul><ul><li>Giga: 1 billion bytes </li></ul>

Terminology To Know <ul><li>URL: Uniform Resource Locator </li></ul><ul><li>HTML: HyperText Markup Language </li></ul><ul><li>FTP: File Transfer Protocol </li></ul><ul><li>HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol </li></ul><ul><li>Hyperlinks: An electronic document that links to another place in the same document or to an entirely different document. Typically, you click on the hyperlink to follow the link. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Web Browsers 101 <ul><li>Web browsers allow users to access the Internet. It’s software that formats HTML. </li></ul><ul><li>Three most used browsers: Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox </li></ul><ul><li>Cache: Browsers retrieve a web page and stores its files on you computer, called a cache. The cache is a temporary storage. (Clear your cache occassionally of unneeded files; it will make you system run better.) </li></ul>

RSS Feeds <ul><li>RSS: Really Simple Syndication </li></ul><ul><li>RSS is a lightweight format to share headlines and other web content. </li></ul><ul><li>Readers subscribe to a sites RSS feed that gets delivered to an RSS reader or web browser. (Web browser readers can be accessed from any computer.) </li></ul><ul><li>Offers online publishers another platform to deliver their content. </li></ul>
