2. “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost
• After the introduction and influence of symbolism during the late 19th Century, many poets
from the 20th Century went on to master this technique.
• Robert Frost, known as one the most influential poets of the 20th Century, uses symbolism
as a main theme in this poem.
• All aspects of nature are used as symbols to interpret, as well as the idea of the unknown.

3. "Languages" by Carl Sandburg
• Imagery was, also, a major influence in 20th Century poetry.
• In the poem, Sandburg compares language to a river, saying that it can end like a river,
but is ever flowing.
• Sandburg also uses descriptive language to further explain the image of what language can
really be.
