Lighting and location
1. LIGHTING AND LOCATION
Lighting adds to the mood of a scene. The trailer uses lighting to
present different feelings for viewers.
Locations allow viewers to understand where the film is set. Knowing
the location of the film and where the characters are help viewers to
understand their situation better. Showing a variety of locations also
ensures viewers won’t get bored of seeing the characters in the same
places.
2. Location- The screen shot below is from the opening scene of the trailer. This
straight away shows viewers the location where the characters are. You can
see they’re in what looks like an abandoned house as it looks run-down and
uncared for. It doesn’t look like the type of place you’d want to be. Straight
away you can tell it is a place that characters won’t want to be in. The location
looks isolated and in the middle of no where implying the characters would
have no where safe to run away to. The fact that the doors are shut and there
are no windows that you can see through implies the characters are trapped
and no natural lighting from outside can get in.
Lighting- The lighting appears to be natural. The bright lighting contradicts the
negative feeling we gain from looking at the building, although, it is typical for
a desert location to be sunny. A shadow can be seen which is being casted
over part of the side of the building connoting something bad and mysterious
could be going on inside.
3. Location- The next few scenes we see show places that seem to be
abandoned. There is no decorations to be seen. The dark walls and floors
creates a cold feeling suggesting something bad will happen.
Lighting-The light source appears to be in the scene coming from the lights in
the ceiling. The lights aren’t overly strong leaving some areas of this location
quite dark making it look eerie and scary. Here the lighting is representing the
genre mystery well. You feel like you wouldn’t want to be in this location by
yourself making viewers feel a little intimidated by what could happen next.
4. Location- Again the location doesn’t have any decorations implying anyone is
looking after the place. The blue paint looks like it’s coming off the walls. The
walls have lots of dirty marks on them making you think the place is cold and
possibly damp. You don’t feel as though you’d want to be in this location
either by yourself.
Lighting- The light source appears to be in the scene again with lights
attached to the ceiling. The lights only light up some areas of the location
making you think something or someone could possibly be hiding in the
darker places. The dim lighting also connotes the darker side to the story
which is about to be revealed in the trailer.
5. Location- The inside of the building is shown the most. This implies that this is
where most of the film is set because the men appear to be trapped inside
and they need to find a way out quickly. This location once again doesn’t look
attractive. The lack of colour connotes death. It also creates a cold feeling to
the location making you know you wouldn’t want to be there. Therefore, you
sympathise with the characters more. If the location looked comfy, warm and
bright then you wouldn’t feel as worried for them.
Lighting- The lighting is constant inside the building. The light source seems
to just be coming from the lights you can see in the scene. These types of
lights are kind of light spot lights where they make certain areas appear
brighter than another depending on where they’re placed. You can see dark
areas in this screen shot making viewers wonder what could be hiding there.
It would be easy for the antagonists to sneak up on the men.
