The document discusses how humanities influence creative expression through various branches such as culture, music, philosophy, literature, and morality. It provides examples for each branch, such as how the story in Life of Pi can be interpreted across cultures, how music tells stories through lyrics, Aristotle's view that everything has a purpose, themes explored in The Scarlett Letter, and how helping someone who fell displays morality. The humanities are described as creative and intellectual expressions that inspire imagination through stories and provide a way for humans to do more with life.
3. Humanities
◦ Humanities are the creative and intellectual expressions of each of us in moments of inspiration.
◦ Gives us stories to inspire our imagination and stimulate our passions.
◦ A technique for humans that want to do more with life.
4. 8 Examples of ways that humanities
influence creative expression
- Humanities can influence creative expression through
1. Social problems.
2. Gender problems.
3. History.
4. Communication.
5. Psychology.
6. Politics.
7. Literature.
8. Racial issues.
6. Culture
◦ Made up of languages, history, philosophy, religion, and arts.
◦ Having empathy to other experiences to promote understanding.
◦ Example: the move Life of Pi
- Fictional story about a man that survived a shipwreck through
seemingly insurmountable odds and adapted to his environment.
- The story is about religion versus science and faith against reason.
- Can be interpreted across all cultures in that it depicts a theme of faith,
the existence of God, the different religions within the film, and how
the main character experiences culture shock.
7. Music
◦ Music has been an important part of every human culture, past and present.
◦ Plays a part in brain development.
◦ Example: Music – every artist has a story to tell through their lyrics and can be understood by all
people.
- Musical components are the fundamentals of communication and how we relate to one
another
- How one person may interpret a song, another person may interpret it another way.
- The song Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis depicts a story about how each of us
are born with a
talent and a purpose on this earth, and that there is no freedom until we are all equal, and
that love is
patient and kind.
8. Philosophy
◦ 4 philosophical views: Materialism, Philosophical naturalism, teleology, nihilism.
◦ Teleology: the purpose to human existence.
◦ Example: Aristotle’s Science of Nature
- Aristotle’s view of the world and nature presented how everything
has a purpose in life, such as why birds have wings; to fly.
- “ At present, we must confine ourselves to saying that the soul is the
source of these phenomena and is characterized by the powers of
self-nutrition, sensation, thinking, understanding, and movement.”
9. Literature
◦ Reading and studying to gain a different perspective on an idea, belief, value, or culture.
◦ Example: The Scarlett Letter
-This novel is a story about guilt, sin, and the struggles of dignity and repentance.
10. Morality
◦ The sense of right versus wrong.
◦ Being proactive to help others.
◦ Example: Witness someone fall on the ice, and instead of walking by,
you stop to assist them in getting back up; ensuring they are ok and safe.
There is no personal greed associated with this, other than the feeling
of selfless service in helping others. Unlike the movie Wolf of Wall Street,
the main character strived for personal greed with no disregard to the people
he was affecting in his deals.
