Essay on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a fictional adventure/fantasy that was written by L. Frank Baum in
1965. L. Frank Baum was born near Chittenango, New York in 1856. Frank grew up with a heart
condition so he couldn't play physically like other children so he developed a creative side, so he
decided to write stories.
The setting of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was set in with a happy society with some upsetting
problems. The story was set in the 1950's, the story started in Kansas and then it moved into a
wonderful place called Oz. Dorothy lived in Kansas and grown up with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry,
and her loving pet Toto. But one day on the farm a tornado came and she was in her bedroom

While she was following the yellow brick road she met up with the tin woodsman, scarecrow, and
the cowardly lion and they all became great friends. They all traveled together because they were all
trying to find the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. During their trip they did run into some minor
complications and the main conflict was introduced when the wicked witch tried everything to stop
them from getting to the Emerald City. But then one day they finally made it to the wizard and they
told the wizard what they wished for and the wizard said that he couldn't grant any wished until you
get the broom of the wicked witch of the West. Finally, they achieved the Wizards wish, so they got
there's. The most exciting part of the story was when they found the Emerald City and when they
each had there wish come true. So when Dorothy gets to go home, Tin man gets his heart, lion gets
his courage, and last but not least the scarecrow gets a brain is when the outcome of the plot comes
into place. The ending of the story was very happy because everyone got what he or she wished for.
The tone of the book changes within locations and characters in this book. The book begins when
she is in Kansas with her Aunt and Uncle and then she goes to the Land of Oz, and she was so
happy there. She didn't really want to leave because of all the friends she had made but then on the
other hand she missed her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. There was an example of pathos in this book

Oz as Utopia
Taylor Wilton
Dr. Ethna Lay
The Wonderful Worlds of Utopia
Americans crave Oz because of it 's utopian vision. On the surface, Oz appears to be a perfect utopia
to Dorothy. When she first arrives, Oz is bright, colorful and full of magic and wonder while her
home in Kansas is dull, lifeless and devoid of hope. In Kansas, it 's as if the citizens are stuck with
no real plans or goals for the future. In Oz, traveling down the elaborate, intertwined yellow brick
road offers Dorothy a great chance for adventure and hope and magic. This also goes for Elphaba
from the Broadway show, Wicked. Bot of their desire is to go home. The end of the yellow brick
road and the Wizard offers a chance for both of their prayers to be answered. ... Show more content

Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to "focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed
excesses (218)." The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in
Snow White is vanity, and how looks won 't get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like
Cinderella, they teach that "intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has
acquaintances in high places (Cashdan, 9)." The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than
other stories such as Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy 's journey to make
herself a happier person and find a happier life. "Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps
her fulfil her own (218)." Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes.
This is comforting for both children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on
outer appearance, even if they are indeed good–looking. Intelligence is more important in the long
run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba 's popularity,
but Elphaba is the one who triumphs in the end when the teacher gives her special privelages with a
wand because she realizes how smart and gifted she is, disregarding her looks completely. Also, in
The Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow symbolizes how uncomfortable it is to feel unintelligent. "He knows
his lot in life will be vastly improved if he can make sense of the world. And

What Does The Color Symbolize In The Wizard Of Oz
In the novel, The Wizard of Oz , by L Frank Baum, colors play an important part in setting the
scene. The story starts out in all gray, but after the tornado color enters the picture. There is a reason
for that. The author helps the reader visualize the story through color. There are many colors used,
once colors come into the story. Gray, yellow, and green will be the ones focused here. Each color
sets a tone and symbolizes something. Are the colors used the way most people associate with
them? Read on and find out.
First off the author uses the color grey. This color is known to represent dull, dingy and often is
associated with loss or depression. The author uses this color to represent Kansas. Dorothy's life was
boring and dull. Her home life was not a happy place. The floors squeak, the wallpaper is ghastly,
and Dorothy told us that Auntie Em saved hair in a jar and Uncle Henry had only one pair of shoes.
These are depressing things so everything in Kansas was gray. She made it seem like such a bad
place that's why she ran away from home.
The author also uses the color yellow. This color represents freshness, happiness, positivity, and
optimism, but on the other, it represents cowardice. The yellow brick road is what Dorothy follows
to hopefully find her way home. This is representing the positive thoughts she is keeping to get ...

This color represents the color of life, renewal, nature, and energy. When Dorothy meets the Tin
Man, the scenery is green. This is ironic because she met the tin man who believes that he didn't
have life because he had no heart. Or did he have a heart, life and energy all along? Green is also
traditionally associated with money, ambition, greed. Green is the color of the Emerald City, where
everyone seems to be wealthy and look down upon others. The Great Oz himself was dressed in
green. He was the all powerful of Oz and the one who could get Dorothy home and the others what

The Struggle In Dorothy Steinbeck's 'Wizard Of Oz'
A gale can be defined as a strong wind, possibly blowing a vessel or person off course. In the
"Wizard of Oz", Dorothy Gale is the main character, the protagonist. Throughout the moving
picture, Dorothy is repeatedly distracted during her quest, trailing off of the yellow brick road.
Dorothy Gale inevitably blows off course, distracted by wants, friends, and misdemeanor. Soon after
Dorothy meets The Scarecrow, she spots apples off to the side of the yellow brick road. Without a
second thought, she runs to the trees and attempts to pick the apples, leaving the yellow brick road.
Her impulsive decision to leave path demonstrates her fate of being blown off course, because her
wants outweighed her need to stay on the yellow brick road. As Dorothy

Brick Laying Essay
Brick Laying Assignment My quotation comes from the 1995 Walt Disney movie Pocahontas.
Pocahontas goes to visit her grandmother Willow for advice after her father tells her he believes that
marrying Kocoum is the right path for her, thus grandmother Willow exclaimes "sometimes the right
path is not the easiest one." I did some research on this quote by watching the clip from the movie
after coming across it on google search for inspirational quotes. I really enjoyed this saying by
grandmother Willow because i can relate to it on many levels. One way I relate to this quotes is
because like Pocahontas, I refer to my Nana for advice. Additionally, I believe that some paths in
our life are harder than others and it doesn't mean that the easy decisions are the wrong ones or that
the hard ones are the right ones but that no matter what path we take, it is going to be hard at times,
and easy. As a students, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These themes were nature and disney. The first thing i wanted to do was make sure the pathway
stood out and how i thought of making it pop out was by colouring it a bright colour. This made me
come up with the idea of incorporating the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz because the
right path for dorothy was to follow the yellow brick road. The next Disney part i wanted to show in
my brick was the lion, this is because in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy came into contact with a lion
which stopped her from continuing walking. I thought this would add significance to my brick
because it says that the right path is not always the easiest and i believe that our pathways in life
take a while due to interruptions, struggles and competitions. Additionally, it is a known saying that
it is bad luck when a cat passes you trail and since a lion is a type of cat i thought it tied in perfectly.
Lastly, a lion is a symbol of strength which helps us get out of our

"The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman: The...
The story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman reflects society's attitude and
treatment of mental health issues in the late 1800s. As the story begins, the narrator chronicles her
mental health deterioration after the birth of her baby. Her writings reflect her husband's attitude
about her condition, which represents society's ignorance of women's medical issues. As the story
progresses, the wallpaper itself becomes personified as a prison warden, who oppresses her
freedom. As the narrator peels away the wallpaper, Gilman uses setting and imagery to draw readers
into the narrator's world of confusion, anxiety, and depression to share her experience with what we
now know to be post–partum depression (PPD). A woman's body is an incredible creation, designed
by God to nurture and bring forth new life. The outward changes and evolution of pregnancy are
obvious and amazing. The neurological and hormonal changes are invisible but no less significant.
This story focuses on the invisible elements of child birth and points to how society has
misunderstood and mislabeled PPD as a psychological disorder. By definition PPD is "moderate to
severe depression in a woman after she has given birth" (Board 1). Throughout the story, the woman
shows many signs of this psychological disorder, but due to the era she is living in, research has not
been established that she is suffering from an actual medical condition. The reader starts to acquire
clues such as the woman's

"The way to Everest is not a Yellow Brick Road" – Jon Krakauer. This statement derives from
Krakauer's thoughts and takeaways from his disastrous climb up Mount Everest that completely
upset Krakauer's viewpoint of his lifelong dream, to climb the tallest mountain in the world.
Krakauer recounts his journey while scaling Mount Everest in his non–fictional book Into Thin Air,
that supports his statement of why the climb is not a Yellow Brick Road. Jon Krakauer's countless
mountaineering adventures are the foundation of most of his books, including Eiger Dreams, Into

How Did The Color Change Throughout The Wonderful Oz
The Wonderful Oz was written by Frank Baum, who had a liked fairytales. He was an interior
decorator and fashion designer who knew about color schemes. Baum was very aware of how color
schemes worked and had even written about the subject. "Baum published William M. Couran's
"The Scientific Arrangement of Color," in the September and October 1898 issues of his trade
magazine The Show Window. () Throughout the book he use the "primary colors and they changed
from one color to another he contrast the color and blend to the environment the color as it changed
to the new. Dorothy goes from one primary through a secondary to get to the next color. () In
chapter 1 he set the scene of how bad things were on the Kansas Prairies. Baum used the color
"gray" many times in one paragraph. Dorothy saw everything as gray from sky, the house, the land,
grass and even Uncle Henry and Aunt Em no longer had color. All the happiness was gone. Toto
was the only other color mentioned in the chapter. Toto was black and had sparkly "black eyes." H e
was Dorothy's only happiness.
The cyclone took Dorothy on a journey to a Land of Oz where everything was bright and colorful.

The Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz
Early in the book, we see how Baum was influenced by color. It also appears that he may have
wanted to specifically make references to the United States in his book as well. "When the meet
Glinda, she is described in the colors of the national flag, as a woman with "rich red" hair, a dress of
"pure white," and blue eyes." 1 It appears as if the association of Glinda with the colors of red,
white, and blue was not a mere coincidence. Glinda plays an important role in the story, and while
she is a witch, she is a "good" and powerful witch. She also plays an important role at the end of the
story when she is able to help Dorothy achieve her dreams. Oz, the supposed powerful one, was not
able to help Dorothy, but, "through Glinda, Dorothy finally learns the secret ... Show more content

Each country of Oz has its own distinct color (see diagram below). The arrangement of this color
scheme is also very important. "There is no great symbolic meaning to the color scheme of Oz... but
it is not arbitrary either. The change from one region to another follows the principles of color
theory. Each of the three major countries visited in the Wizard of Oz has a primary color, one of the
three from which all others derive. Dorothy and her companions do not journey directly from one
primary color to another. Instead their path passes through a secondary one. To get to the West, they
must go through the green countryside around theEmerald City, merely a link between the blue land
of the Munchkins and the yellow Winkie Country. They also traverse from the Winkie Country to
Glinda's Castle in the red South by way of the Emerald City; the wild countryside they visit before
arriving in the Quadling Country is brown. It is made from all three primary colors or mixing green
with red. The standard color wheel puts blue to the right (East), yellow to the left (West) and red at
the bottom (South) like the Munchkins, Winkies, and

The Film Analysis Of The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a film whom plot is based on a sad and lonely Kansas farm girl, whose name is
Dorothy. Dorothy is unhappy and dreams of a better place without hatred toward her dog Toto from
a hateful neighbor spinster, so in that case Dorothy plans to run away to escape the unhappy life she
lives. During her plan to run away a terrifying tornado strikes her town and Dorothy is struck on the
head and transported to a falsity land called "beyond the rainbow" where she interacts with people
that are from her real life but are transformed into magical characters. On the the yellow brick road
Dorothy meets friends who on the way overthrow the Wicked Witch of the West. Each one of the
friends including Dorothy have a heart desire of what they want and soon were granted with it from
the Wizard of OZ. At the end Dorothy was enabled to return to Kansas her home. "The shot" in the
film The Wizard of Oz established many details throughout the film. The scene when the Wicked
Witch of the West appeared to find her sister The Wicked Witch of the East dead under the house
with her legs sticking out and her feet that had the red sparkling shoes is a great example of
establishing a shot. It established the details, the time, and the place of the film. While the witch is
ranting about the heals gone missing and being placed on Dorothy's feet they create a "close–up"
shot on the Wicked Witch of the West when she says, "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too."

First, Dorothy's silver shoes play an incredible and key role in the story. The importance of silver is
that it symbolizes the efforts of both farmer and miners in miners in the late 1800's built a coalition
that attempted to push a free silver movement whereby they would be able to pay their debts. This
represents the silver standard for which the farmers and miners fought congress for. Dorothy is to
keep the silver shoes on as they become the key to her liberation.

What Does The Storm Symbolize In The Wizard Of Oz
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'' by L. Frank Baum is not just about a girl and her dog trying to go
back to their home. This novel involves lots of symbols that have a totally different meaning. In
addition, the book in my opinion symbolizes the era of the great depression In the U.S. I came upon
this conclusion because the symbols, such as tragedy the main character faces, the yellow brick road
and the other characters came together to symbolize the dreams and ambitions the people of that
depressing time period. In the Great Plains of Kansas a storm was brewing. Winds gaining strength
to "destroy everything in its path." The ones to see the horrifying storm was an unwealthy family of
three, a girl named Dorothy, her uncle Henry, and her aunt Em. The family lived in a small house
that wouldn't be able to sustain such a storm. The harsh storm in fact symbolized the crash of the
economy. Everything was becoming destroyed; nothing could withstand the terrible storm called the

Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz
Could you ever imagine if The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum didn't have a
yellow brick road or an Emerald City? The colors chosen are significant and give the story a deeper
meaning. Three colors that stand out in the beginning, middle and the end of the novel are gray,
yellow and green. In the novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum's use of color is symbolic by
associating distinct colors with specific settings and characters.
In the beginning of the story, the color gray is found countless times. To portray the setting in
Kansas, the color gray repetitively describes their home and it is even used to show the personalities
of the characters of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. There were no other homes, not even a tree in sight,
Kansas was far from exciting. "When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could
see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side" (Baum 13). Baum describes the farmhouse as
"dull and gray as everything else"; it was only one large room and the paint had blistered. Aunt Em's
eyes, cheeks, and lips were even depicted as gray. Sitting on the doorstep looking at the sky that was
"grayer than usual" was Uncle Henry with a gray beard and gray boots (Baum 14). Gray was also
used to show the character's feelings. Aunt Em worried and Uncle Henry's work tired him out. Life
on the farm was already "gray", gloomy and depressing and then the cyclone hit.
The cyclone lifted the home with Dorothy and her dog Toto still inside. After

How To Break Up With Someone Essay
How To Break Up With Someone
Almost everyone will have to break up with a boyfriend or a girlfriend at some point in his or her

Tell them what you have learned from the relationship and let them know that you will carry on this
knowledge forever. You can further use your experience from this relationship when you come to
problems in future relationships. Do not attack the person with how they hurt you or hit them with
personal blows. True, there is a reason you are breaking up, but there is no need to include that
because it will only start an argument. This leads us to our next matter, what to do if they ask what
went wrong?
If the person asks what went wrong do not verbally attack them. This could lead to many situations
that could make the break up more difficult, including an unwanted fight. Tell them simply that it is
you and blame yourself. If you blame them they could try to convince you that they can change
when you know they can?t. However, if you blame yourself, he or she cannot say, ?Well you could
change this?? Make up an excuse. You can say you have a lot of stress on you, you don?t want a
serious relationship right now or you have other priorities to tend to. Make sure the excuse is
something that they could not change about their self. This could lead to being manipulated into
staying.
After the initial break up is over, make sure to cut off all contact with this person. Do not call them
or go places you might see them. Avoid them at all costs. If you continue to

The Wizard of Oz The Wizard of Oz is a classic American film interpreted from L. Frank Baum's
book published in 1900. We have all seen the film as a child and enjoy it equally as adults. It is a
film we watch repeatedly to experience the wonders of our imaginations. There are many key
elements that have made this film a notorious childhood memory as well as an American classic that
we have treasured for generations. How could we forget the magical characters, the music, and the
outstanding cinematography? The theme of the film can be summed up simply from one of the
many notable phrases, "there's no place like home". Dorothy, a Kansas farm girl dreams of a better

The beginning scene which takes place in Kansas was filmed in sepia toned black and white. This
lends to the feeling of Dorothy's dreary life and the impending tornado. The magic begins when she
arrives in Oz. The use of bright colors sets the tone for the magical journey that is to begin in Oz.
Technicolor had been around since 1916. Previously it had been only the two–strip method. The
advances in the 1930's produced a three–strip method, which produced deeper, brighter colors. It
was this method that enabled success to the Wizard of Oz. " In Kansas we had no idea that
Dorothy's dress was blue or that Toto was blackish grey. Now everything took on a new meaning.
The color in Dorothy's dress and the color of her skin gave her a happier, more hopeful feeling. In
fact, the whole setting was happier and more hopeful. The high saturation of the colors made Oz a
much more appealing place than Kansas. The dress of the people in Oz was more exciting and
appealing"(Bordwell 2008). The director and cinematographer did an excellent job using color and
costuming in the film to effectively convey certain messages, especially those of danger and evil.
Most of the film was colorful and happy, but when danger was lurking, the audience was made well
aware of it with dark colors and costuming. This movie uses many different film techniques which
aid in its fantastical journey. For example, the very beginning of the film there is a direct shot of

Analysis Of Frank Baum 's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz
In Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a tornado rips Dorothy from her home in Kansas and
drops her in the Land of Oz. To get home, she must seek answers from the Great and Powerful
Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. In similar fashion, Mississippi has been caught in the grips of a
tornado that has left both public school educators and state legislators looking for answers to the
state's education problems. Unfortunately, many legislators seem to be more interested in taking on
the role of a vengeful wicked witch than truly finding answers. While state educators are steadily
inching their way along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, state legislators have lost
themselves in their own self–proclaimed righteousness, contentious leadership, and omniscient
swagger. Unlike Dorothy who is directed by the Good Witch and the Munchins to the yellow brick
road leading to the Emerald City, most Mississippi legislators have bought into their own eminence
and chosen to find their way on their own. As a result, they are so far off the yellow brick road that
they are forever lost in the land of the Munchkins. These legislators, primarily Republicans, talk big

The Wizard Of Oz By L. Frank Baum
The Wizard of Oz, based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, is a
movie that focuses on a young girl and her whimsical adventure through the Land of Oz.
Throughout the last century, many people have interpreted the film in various ways.
However, Baum was a member of a philosophical organization called the Theosophical Society that
focused on the occult. He used its lessons and teachings to write The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The
movie adaptation resembles the themes in the novel, such as occult symbolism and self–
enlightenment.
Beginning in Kansas on Dorothy's aunt and uncle's farm, the film focuses around Dorothy's
monotonous life. Shortly into the movie, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are swept away by a twister
and dropped off in the magical Land of Oz. Here she meets the Good Witch of the North, Glinda.
She advises Dorothy to follow the Yellow Brick Road and find the Wizard, who can grant the girl
her wish of returning to Kansas. Along her path to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz lives,
she encounters the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. Each lack something they need, so
they join Dorothy on her journey to see the Wizard, in hopes to gain what they are missing.
However, their pilgrimage faces a manifold of obstacles, most importantly the Wicked Witch of the
West and her mission to retrieve ruby red slippers from Dorothy. She fails. Dorothy kills the Wicked
Witch of the West. After defeating the evil witch, the Tin Man is talking with

Follow The Yellow Brick Road : The Wizard Of Oz
"Follow the yellow brick road" – The Wizard of Oz. Although society is more familiar with the
1939 version it was in fact the fifth remake of the 1910 silent film. In fact the original film was
actually based off of a 1902 stage musical of the same content which was based off of the original
book written by Lyman Frank Baum. The release of the movies 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ' and
'Oz the Great and Powerful ' is a 103 years difference. In that amount of time this movie has been
remade 57 times and counting. Even though the newer version of the Wizard of Oz isn 't a remake of
the original it 's more of a prequel , both the original and the new version were interesting as you get
a different perspective because the focus was on different aspects, the techniques used were
drastically different and the characters play roles that are unexpected. First, there are quite a few
differences between the two films because the plot of the story is altered so that the audience get to
see the story play out in the third person 's perspective in the 1910 version where as the perspective
is changed to the wizard 's point of view in the 2013 version. The original movie was a black and
white silent film that only lasted thirteen minutes long and while the characters are still on a quest to
find the wizard some of the scenes are moving at a faster tempo or are not included at all as the
audience is filled in though text what is happening. In the new version it also starts out in black

Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz
Published in 1900 by Lyman Frank Baum, the Wizard of Oz is one of the most widely known and
influential pieces of literature from the 20th century. Intended as a fairytale for young children, it
recounts the fictitious adventures of a young, orphaned Kansas girl named Dorothy in the
spectacular Land of Oz. In spite of its wide renown as a children's story, many scholars have
theorized that it is actually an ardent parable supporting the early 20th century movement of
Populism. During the peak of this "people's movement," the Populist and Democratic Parties jointly
nominated William Jennings Bryan as their presidential candidate in 1896. The platform of his
campaign rested in part on replacing the gold standard with free silver, which was one of the most
hotly debated topics at the time, as well as uplifting the average farmer. Henry M. Littlefield makes
a compelling argument in his essay titled "The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism" that Baum used
vivid imagery to bring the Populist ideals to light in his work. Baum associated the main characters
of the story with individuals or groups of individuals, and he utilized the famed Silver Slippers and
the Yellow Brick Road to express his opinion about the free silver issue.
After arriving at Oz and setting down the Yellow Brick Road for the Emerald City, Dorothy meets a
Woodman made completely out of tin. Long before Dorothy ever made his acquaintance, the
Wicked Witch of the East cursed him; he noticed that his axe

Chapter 24 –– ...And Rarely Just Illness
Death is very frequent in real life and in literature. Mainly when it comes to diseases like cancer.
Diseases are a way to drive a plot, link in a theme and draw in symbolism. In The Fault in Our Stars,
one of the main characters ,Augustus Waters, lost his leg to a bone type cancer. Even with successful
treatment, his cancer still manages to get worse and unfortunately leading him to his death. His
death is reflective of the principles governing disease in literature because his treatments was

Things were different back then, men could master their wives so she'll do whatever he wants and
tells her to do. This was considered the custom lifestyle. It was accepted for a women to be treated
more like a servant. Today, people wouldn't agree with that just because of how things are in society
today. Things would be chaotic, feminists would be furious and outraged.
Chapter 26 –– Is He Serious? And Other Ironies The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an example of
irony. The whole plot of the story and characters represent situational irony. Dorothy if trying to find
her way home so she goes to see the wizard. As the show progresses towards the end she later on
finds out that if she wanted to go home she could have been gone earlier. Just with the simple help
to clicking her shoes while saying there 's no place like home. In the beginning the the Lion is a

end.The Scarecrow wants to be wise, and he discovers that he is brilliant. In the end the the Wizard
that everybody respected ends up being just an old man.

Themes in 'The Wonderful Wizard of OZ' by Frank Baum
The book I read was the wizard of Oz, written by Frank Baum. This classic novel contains several
major themes, self sufficiency, the importance of life's journey and friendship.
The first theme of self sufficiency is illustrated throughout the story. All of the main characters,
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion are looking to the wizard to solve their problems.
The Scarecrow is in search of a brain. Although he is constantly making remarks on how stupid he
is actually solving the groups problems that arise. For example when the Wicked Witch of the East
sends angry bees after Dorothy and her friends, he comes up with the solution to cover Dorothy,
ToTo and the Lion with his straw so they would not be stung. The Tin Man is ... Show more content

I think the second theme is the importance of the journey. The importance of the journey can be
symbolized by the yellow brick road. Throughout the novel Dorothy travels along the yellow brick
road on her journey to get home to Kansas. Similar to real life she meets new people, makes new
friends and has new experiences. Life is full of issues just as the yellow brick road was full of
unexpected obstacles. there were holes, dark forests and dangerous rivers. Encountaring experiences
both difficult and enriching are the substance of learning about yourself and you relation to others.
Dorothy's escape from the Wicked Witch Dorothy motivates her to keep on with her attempt to get
home. Dorothy had to overcome these obstacles just as we have to overcome obstacles that
happened to us as we journey through life.
The final theme of the wizard of Oz is the need for friendship. In Kansas Dorothy lacks friends
other than her trusting companion ToTo. However in the land of OZ Dorothy makes new friends
who provide her with companionship emotional support and protection. The scarecrow, the Tin Man
and the lion help Dorothy cross rivers, battle angry bees and wolves, and save her from sleeping
forever in the field of poppies. In return her friends rely on Dorothy to get them to the Wizard of
OZ.. In a munchkins home the author states "the woman now gave Dorothy a bed to sleep in, and
Toto lay beside her, while

Wizard Of Oz
Many films have captivated the hearts and minds of Americans, however a true film goes in–depth
into the current social tensions and customs of the modern world. Such a film, was The Wizard Of
Oz. Beneath the surface of the film, one may examine many characteristics of real world struggles
through creative flair. In films, directors will strive to make characters, storylines, backdrops,
lighting and other creative factors up to par with modern day events (Lewis 2007). So too, The
Wizard Of Oz offers viewers something rather unique and made the world of Hollywood more
esoteric than ever before. When observing the storyline of this particular film, one will see the main
character Dorothy running into a scarecrow on her journey down the yellow brick road. From an
outside perspective, this may seem like it's just a part of the movie, however it represents something
rather deep. The scarecrow is said to represent the farmers in America who do not possess the wit to
realize that the banks can take their farms, even though they care so much for the people they feed
(Bryan 2015). Other characters take form to represent modern day issues as well. For instance, the
tin man represents the industrial workers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The yellow brick road is said to represent "The Gold Standard." In essence the entire film is
backdropped against the concept of United States monetary policy (BBC 2014). During the
screening of this film, people had little to no income and were able to depict certain scenarios in
their lives to the film. Films that relate to people on a level like this, pull in a larger crowd and have
a much larger impact on film history overall (Lewis 2007). Exploring the scenery in the film, one
can also go in–depth into the art of current events. For instance, the emerald city is said to represent
Washington D.C. and the immense wealth of corporate

novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. One of the many reasons this book catches
many people's attention is through the imagination, transporting the viewers on an immersive
journey into a magically surreal land full of dark adventures and symbolic undertones. Over the
years, both the book and the movie have fueled a number of elaborate theories as to the story's
deeper meanings. L. Frank Baum uses symbols to help readers better understand his characters
which make them very relatable. Religious allegory, feminist allegory, and political allegory were
all of the many symbols that L. Frank Baum used throughout his work. ... Show more content on

The Yellow Brick Road Of College Essay
The Yellow Brick Road of College If college really is the road to success, then why doesn't
everyone go to college for knowing they will be successful in the long run? This question is
something that almost every high school student goes through when they are in their final years of
high school. Whether it is taking exhausting advanced placement classes, studying for an upcoming
ACT test, working to receive community service hours, or filling out and ultimately submitting an
application in hopes of getting accepted into college, being admitted to college can be an
excruciating task at hand. Being a hard–working, focused high school student I find that college is
the path that all teens should consider walking upon because of the opportunities of being more
successful financially and mentally are more likely, the legacy and positive behavior can be looked
up to by my future children, and the expenses that many fear of college will ultimately be nullified

My Yellow Brick Road Research Paper
My yellow brick road starts in mid–March fourteen years ago in Redmond, Oregon. My story is
long and complicated. There are ups and downs, highs and lows. One person that I can say that has
been there for me the entire time is my Mom. My life is not perfect by any stretch of the

and I do not know where it is going to end, but I do know that my journey has taken me to a small
town in southern California called Lake Elsinore.
My roots are in Redmond, Oregon, but after the tornado of my parent's divorce and my Mom and I
living in Mexico for six weeks we moved into my grandparent's house in Lake Elsinore, California.
I was only one–years–old when my parents divorced, so it was not until I got a little bit older that I

Persuasive Essay : The End Of Life
This quote gets to me all the time in the way that it gets me thinking. We do so much to get what we
want and what we think is the best for us but we don't want to put in all the effort and time it takes
to succeed. We want it all to come easily and handed to us but in reality, it doesn't and sometimes
some of us don't quite understand, because we want everything the easy way. Doing drugs, failing
classes, and getting in trouble is a lot easier than staying clear of drugs, passing a class, and obeying
the laws or rules to stay out of trouble; however, it's the wrong path you could take because you
don't go on with life with all that. In the end it makes it harder for you to catch up once you're
already an adult. I know that sometimes there are days for all of us where we just want to lay in bed
and not hear from anyone about anything anymore because we're done with everything, but no one
told us that life itself was going to be easy. Making an effort to stay alive is the path we should take
even though it's not the easiest one, it can be tough and the people around us can be a little too
rough, yet we manage to keep our heads up and keep going with our lives. Although some of us feel
like it's easier to give up and leave it all so we won't deal with it, yes, it is easier but the way I see it
why give up something that can be beautiful at the end everything takes time and that time is
unknown. It could take a year, 5 years, maybe even 30 years, but it comes if we let and if

An Analysis Of Sonia Nazario, S Enrique's Journey
What is home? This question often incites discussion on the difference between a house and a home.
It should be noted that there is no right answer to this query. It is a very "to each their own" type of
situation. However, there are two stories where home, as an idea, is the central concept. Sonia
Nazario's Enrique's Journey chronicles a young boy's, whose family and stability were ripped out
from under him, journey as a now troubled man across countries to reclaim what was rightfully his.
L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz narrates the trials and tribulations of a young girl who quite
literally had her home ripped away from her. Baum goes on to set down one of the most, if not the
most, famous journeys in human history as Dorothy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dorothy, among the beauty and grandeur of Oz and the Emerald City, choose¬¬s to go back to a
bleak, gray Kansas. Dorothy has a realization that, when love is present, color and beauty can be
brought to even the darkest of situations. Enrique similarly shows bravery throughout Nazario's
novel. Simply embarking on the journey he made which, unlike for Dorothy, was known to be
incredibly dangerous is foolishly brave. However, the desire to have his mother's love again make
that risk worth it for him. Enrique also displayed bravery when crossing the Rio Grande. This part of
Enrique's Journey is very reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz in many ways. However, the bravery is
shown when he trusts El Tirindaro to get him across the Rio Grande. Similarly to Dorothy trusting
the Yellow Brick Road, Enrique has no assurance that he will get across safely and past the border
police. Another way the stories travelers are similar is in the questioning of humanity and morality.
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's three companions all want to be given some quality to make them
more human or moral. The Scarecrow only wants a brain, to be able to think as most do. The Tin
Woodman only wants a heart, to love as most do. The Lion only wants courage, to be brave as some
are. These three personal pursuits are one of the foundational storylines in the book. They represent
a general pursuit of all to be better people. However, in

What Is The Symbolism Of Color In The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz
Introduction {{These titles are not necessary}} In the Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, L. Frank Baum,
used plenty of imagery and color to describe and label a lot of things/places. Which really can help
the reader understand what it represents or means. By that being said, the role of colors in the

example blue, yellow, red, and green. Which they all represent the colors of the cities that they have

from Rotten Tomatoes also states that for The Wizard of Oz was, "An absolute masterpiece whose

The Color Red In The Wizard Of Oz
The use of color is an important role in the novel. Baum was influenced by color. The Oz itself is
divided into different counties, or regions. Each country of the Oz had its own distinct color. The
color scheme is very important also. The change from one region to another follows the principles
of color theory. The three major countries visited in The Wizard Of Oz has a primary color and
passes through a secondary one. When Dorothy emerges from her black and white toned Kansas
home to a technicolored munchkinland, the two worlds emphasize the beginning of an adventure.

The colors change as the story evolves and defines turns in the story such as when her dress turns
white when she searches for the wicked witch and helps psychologically associate Dorothy as being

dress. Green signifies growth. Additionally the closer to Oz Dorothy and her friends get– the more
dark and dreary & scary their environment becomes. The forest before they reach Oz represents
obstacles, fear, uncertainty and boundaries. The goggles required to enter Oz represent visual

Dorothy start on her way down the yellow brick road and meets three important characters. First she
meets the scarecrow with no brain. He represents Farmers and agricultural workers who are ignorant
of many city things but honest and hardworking. Farmers were string supporters of the populist
movement and the scarecrow ends up being a strong supporter of Dorothy throughout the entire
film. Next they meet the tinman. The tinman represents industrial workers. He is a lumberjack
whose body has been replaced with metal. This represents how many workers had been
dehumanized and viewed as only a means to make money. Finally they meet the cowardly lion.
When they first meet the lion he does his best to scare them but ends up being afraid of them. He
tells them he wants to go the emerald city so the wizard can give him courage. He represents
politician William Jennings Bryan. Bryan was a populist presidential candidate and the out spoken
leader of the populist movement. He had been criticized as being a coward for not supporting the
U.S. and its decision to go to war with Spain. Bryan wanted to get into Washington so he could

The Influence of Color
Could you ever imagine if The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum didn't have a
yellow brick road or an Emerald City? The colors chosen are significant and give the story a deeper
meaning. Three colors that stand out in the beginning, middle and the end of the novel are gray,
yellow and green. In the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum's use of color is symbolic by
associating distinct colors with specific settings and characters.
The color gray is referenced in the beginning of the story. Gray is used repetitively to describe the
setting in Kansas, their home and it is even used to portray the characters of Aunt Em and Uncle
Henry. Kansas was not exciting, there were no other homes and not even a tree in sight. "When
Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on
every side" (Baum 13). Baum describes the farmhouse as "dull and gray as everything else". Aunt
Em's eyes, cheeks and lips were even depicted as gray. Uncle Henry's beard and boots were gray
and he sat on the door–step looking at the sky that was "grayer than usual" (Baum 14). Gray was
also used to show the character's feelings. Aunt Em was worried and Uncle Henry was tired from
working. Life was already "gray", gloomy and depressing and then the cyclone hit.
The cyclone lifted the home with Dorothy and her dog Toto inside. After the house landed the reader
and Dorothy knew that things were going to be quite different. The

Essay On The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz By L. Frank Baum

  • 1. Essay on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum The Wonderful Wizard of Oz The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a fictional adventure/fantasy that was written by L. Frank Baum in 1965. L. Frank Baum was born near Chittenango, New York in 1856. Frank grew up with a heart condition so he couldn't play physically like other children so he developed a creative side, so he decided to write stories. The setting of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was set in with a happy society with some upsetting problems. The story was set in the 1950's, the story started in Kansas and then it moved into a wonderful place called Oz. Dorothy lived in Kansas and grown up with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and her loving pet Toto. But one day on the farm a tornado came and she was in her bedroom listening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While she was following the yellow brick road she met up with the tin woodsman, scarecrow, and the cowardly lion and they all became great friends. They all traveled together because they were all trying to find the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. During their trip they did run into some minor complications and the main conflict was introduced when the wicked witch tried everything to stop them from getting to the Emerald City. But then one day they finally made it to the wizard and they told the wizard what they wished for and the wizard said that he couldn't grant any wished until you get the broom of the wicked witch of the West. Finally, they achieved the Wizards wish, so they got there's. The most exciting part of the story was when they found the Emerald City and when they each had there wish come true. So when Dorothy gets to go home, Tin man gets his heart, lion gets his courage, and last but not least the scarecrow gets a brain is when the outcome of the plot comes into place. The ending of the story was very happy because everyone got what he or she wished for. The tone of the book changes within locations and characters in this book. The book begins when she is in Kansas with her Aunt and Uncle and then she goes to the Land of Oz, and she was so happy there. She didn't really want to leave because of all the friends she had made but then on the other hand she missed her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. There was an example of pathos in this book and ... • 2. Oz as Utopia Taylor Wilton Dr. Ethna Lay The Wonderful Worlds of Utopia Americans crave Oz because of it 's utopian vision. On the surface, Oz appears to be a perfect utopia to Dorothy. When she first arrives, Oz is bright, colorful and full of magic and wonder while her home in Kansas is dull, lifeless and devoid of hope. In Kansas, it 's as if the citizens are stuck with no real plans or goals for the future. In Oz, traveling down the elaborate, intertwined yellow brick road offers Dorothy a great chance for adventure and hope and magic. This also goes for Elphaba from the Broadway show, Wicked. Bot of their desire is to go home. The end of the yellow brick road and the Wizard offers a chance for both of their prayers to be answered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cashdan claims that The Wizard of Oz tends to "focus on shortcomings in the self as opposed excesses (218)." The themes in each fairy tale focus on different subjects. For instance, the theme in Snow White is vanity, and how looks won 't get you anywhere. In other traditional fairy tales like Cinderella, they teach that "intelligence, hard work and courage count for little unless one has acquaintances in high places (Cashdan, 9)." The Wizard of Oz focuses on more inner conflicts than other stories such as Snow White and Cinderella. The story is about Dorothy 's journey to make herself a happier person and find a happier life. "Helping her companions fulfil their destinies helps her fulfil her own (218)." Cashdan also explains how intelligence can outweigh physical attributes. This is comforting for both children and adults alike because, overall, no one wants to be juded on outer appearance, even if they are indeed good–looking. Intelligence is more important in the long run. In Wicked, Glinda is obsessed with her prettiness and seems to outweigh Elphaba 's popularity, but Elphaba is the one who triumphs in the end when the teacher gives her special privelages with a wand because she realizes how smart and gifted she is, disregarding her looks completely. Also, in The Wizard of Oz, Scarecrow symbolizes how uncomfortable it is to feel unintelligent. "He knows his lot in life will be vastly improved if he can make sense of the world. And ... • 3. What Does The Color Symbolize In The Wizard Of Oz In the novel, The Wizard of Oz , by L Frank Baum, colors play an important part in setting the scene. The story starts out in all gray, but after the tornado color enters the picture. There is a reason for that. The author helps the reader visualize the story through color. There are many colors used, once colors come into the story. Gray, yellow, and green will be the ones focused here. Each color sets a tone and symbolizes something. Are the colors used the way most people associate with them? Read on and find out. First off the author uses the color grey. This color is known to represent dull, dingy and often is associated with loss or depression. The author uses this color to represent Kansas. Dorothy's life was boring and dull. Her home life was not a happy place. The floors squeak, the wallpaper is ghastly, and Dorothy told us that Auntie Em saved hair in a jar and Uncle Henry had only one pair of shoes. These are depressing things so everything in Kansas was gray. She made it seem like such a bad place that's why she ran away from home. The author also uses the color yellow. This color represents freshness, happiness, positivity, and optimism, but on the other, it represents cowardice. The yellow brick road is what Dorothy follows to hopefully find her way home. This is representing the positive thoughts she is keeping to get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This color represents the color of life, renewal, nature, and energy. In the "Wizard of Oz", Dorothy Gale is the main character, the protagonist. Throughout the moving picture, Dorothy is repeatedly distracted during her quest, trailing off of the yellow brick road. Dorothy Gale inevitably blows off course, distracted by wants, friends, and misdemeanor. Soon after Dorothy meets The Scarecrow, she spots apples off to the side of the yellow brick road. Pocahontas goes to visit her grandmother Willow for advice after her father tells her he believes that marrying Kocoum is the right path for her, thus grandmother Willow exclaimes "sometimes the right path is not the easiest one." I did some research on this quote by watching the clip from the movie after coming across it on google search for inspirational quotes. I really enjoyed this saying by grandmother Willow because i can relate to it on many levels. One way I relate to this quotes is because like Pocahontas, I refer to my Nana for advice. Additionally, I believe that some paths in our life are harder than others and it doesn't mean that the easy decisions are the wrong ones or that the hard ones are the right ones but that no matter what path we take, it is going to be hard at times, and easy. This made me come up with the idea of incorporating the yellow brick road from The Wizard of Oz because the right path for dorothy was to follow the yellow brick road. The next Disney part i wanted to show in my brick was the lion, this is because in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy came into contact with a lion which stopped her from continuing walking. I thought this would add significance to my brick because it says that the right path is not always the easiest and i believe that our pathways in life take a while due to interruptions, struggles and competitions. • 6. "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman: The... The story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman reflects society's attitude and treatment of mental health issues in the late 1800s. As the story begins, the narrator chronicles her mental health deterioration after the birth of her baby. Her writings reflect her husband's attitude about her condition, which represents society's ignorance of women's medical issues. As the story progresses, the wallpaper itself becomes personified as a prison warden, who oppresses her freedom. As the narrator peels away the wallpaper, Gilman uses setting and imagery to draw readers into the narrator's world of confusion, anxiety, and depression to share her experience with what we now know to be post–partum depression (PPD). A woman's body is an incredible creation, designed by God to nurture and bring forth new life. The outward changes and evolution of pregnancy are obvious and amazing. The neurological and hormonal changes are invisible but no less significant. This story focuses on the invisible elements of child birth and points to how society has misunderstood and mislabeled PPD as a psychological disorder. By definition PPD is "moderate to severe depression in a woman after she has given birth" (Board 1). Throughout the story, the woman shows many signs of this psychological disorder, but due to the era she is living in, research has not been established that she is suffering from an actual medical condition. • 12. The Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz Early in the book, we see how Baum was influenced by color. It also appears that he may have wanted to specifically make references to the United States in his book as well. "When the meet Glinda, she is described in the colors of the national flag, as a woman with "rich red" hair, a dress of "pure white," and blue eyes." 1 It appears as if the association of Glinda with the colors of red, white, and blue was not a mere coincidence. Glinda plays an important role in the story, and while she is a witch, she is a "good" and powerful witch. She also plays an important role at the end of the story when she is able to help Dorothy achieve her dreams. Each country of Oz has its own distinct color (see diagram below). The arrangement of this color scheme is also very important. "There is no great symbolic meaning to the color scheme of Oz... but it is not arbitrary either. The change from one region to another follows the principles of color theory. Each of the three major countries visited in the Wizard of Oz has a primary color, one of the three from which all others derive. Dorothy and her companions do not journey directly from one primary color to another. Instead their path passes through a secondary one. To get to the West, they must go through the green countryside around theEmerald City, merely a link between the blue land of the Munchkins and the yellow Winkie Country. They also traverse from the Winkie Country to Glinda's Castle in the red South by way of the Emerald City; the wild countryside they visit before arriving in the Quadling Country is brown. The scene when the Wicked Witch of the West appeared to find her sister The Wicked Witch of the East dead under the house with her legs sticking out and her feet that had the red sparkling shoes is a great example of establishing a shot. It established the details, the time, and the place of the film. This novel involves lots of symbols that have a totally different meaning. In addition, the book in my opinion symbolizes the era of the great depression In the U.S. I came upon this conclusion because the symbols, such as tragedy the main character faces, the yellow brick road and the other characters came together to symbolize the dreams and ambitions the people of that depressing time period. In the Great Plains of Kansas a storm was brewing. Winds gaining strength to "destroy everything in its path." The ones to see the horrifying storm was an unwealthy family of three, a girl named Dorothy, her uncle Henry, and her aunt Em. • 17. Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz Could you ever imagine if The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum didn't have a yellow brick road or an Emerald City? The colors chosen are significant and give the story a deeper meaning. Three colors that stand out in the beginning, middle and the end of the novel are gray, yellow and green. In the novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum's use of color is symbolic by associating distinct colors with specific settings and characters. In the beginning of the story, the color gray is found countless times. To portray the setting in Kansas, the color gray repetitively describes their home and it is even used to show the personalities of the characters of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. There were no other homes, not even a tree in sight, Kansas was far from exciting. "When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side" (Baum 13). Baum describes the farmhouse as "dull and gray as everything else"; it was only one large room and the paint had blistered. Aunt Em's eyes, cheeks, and lips were even depicted as gray. Sitting on the doorstep looking at the sky that was "grayer than usual" was Uncle Henry with a gray beard and gray boots (Baum 14). Gray was also used to show the character's feelings. Aunt Em worried and Uncle Henry's work tired him out. Life on the farm was already "gray", gloomy and depressing and then the cyclone hit. We have all seen the film as a child and enjoy it equally as adults. It is a film we watch repeatedly to experience the wonders of our imaginations. There are many key elements that have made this film a notorious childhood memory as well as an American classic that we have treasured for generations. How could we forget the magical characters, the music, and the outstanding cinematography? This lends to the feeling of Dorothy's dreary life and the impending tornado. The magic begins when she arrives in Oz. The use of bright colors sets the tone for the magical journey that is to begin in Oz. Technicolor had been around since 1916. Previously it had been only the two–strip method. The advances in the 1930's produced a three–strip method, which produced deeper, brighter colors. It was this method that enabled success to the Wizard of Oz. " In Kansas we had no idea that Dorothy's dress was blue or that Toto was blackish grey. Now everything took on a new meaning. The color in Dorothy's dress and the color of her skin gave her a happier, more hopeful feeling. In fact, the whole setting was happier and more hopeful. The high saturation of the colors made Oz a much more appealing place than Kansas. The dress of the people in Oz was more exciting and appealing"(Bordwell 2008). The director and cinematographer did an excellent job using color and costuming in the film to effectively convey certain messages, especially those of danger and evil. Most of the film was colorful and happy, but when danger was lurking, the audience was made well aware of it with dark colors and costuming. • 20. Analysis Of Frank Baum 's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz In Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a tornado rips Dorothy from her home in Kansas and drops her in the Land of Oz. To get home, she must seek answers from the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. In similar fashion, Mississippi has been caught in the grips of a tornado that has left both public school educators and state legislators looking for answers to the state's education problems. Unfortunately, many legislators seem to be more interested in taking on the role of a vengeful wicked witch than truly finding answers. While state educators are steadily inching their way along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, state legislators have lost themselves in their own self–proclaimed righteousness, contentious leadership, and omniscient swagger. Unlike Dorothy who is directed by the Good Witch and the Munchins to the yellow brick road leading to the Emerald City, most Mississippi legislators have bought into their own eminence and chosen to find their way on their own. As a result, they are so far off the yellow brick road that they are forever lost in the land of the Munchkins. These legislators, primarily Republicans, talk big about improving education in the state, but they are actually more like little Munchins floundering behind giant lilies, towering sunflowers, and tall weeds. They cannot see beyond party politics, pettiness, shallowness, and personal biases to get the job done. Instead of waging a war to improve public school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Frank Baum, is a movie that focuses on a young girl and her whimsical adventure through the Land of Oz. Throughout the last century, many people have interpreted the film in various ways. However, Baum was a member of a philosophical organization called the Theosophical Society that focused on the occult. He used its lessons and teachings to write The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The movie adaptation resembles the themes in the novel, such as occult symbolism and self– enlightenment. Beginning in Kansas on Dorothy's aunt and uncle's farm, the film focuses around Dorothy's monotonous life. Shortly into the movie, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are swept away by a twister and dropped off in the magical Land of Oz. Here she meets the Good Witch of the North, Glinda. • 23. Symbolism In The Wizard Of Oz Published in 1900 by Lyman Frank Baum, the Wizard of Oz is one of the most widely known and influential pieces of literature from the 20th century. Intended as a fairytale for young children, it recounts the fictitious adventures of a young, orphaned Kansas girl named Dorothy in the spectacular Land of Oz. In spite of its wide renown as a children's story, many scholars have theorized that it is actually an ardent parable supporting the early 20th century movement of Populism. During the peak of this "people's movement," the Populist and Democratic Parties jointly nominated William Jennings Bryan as their presidential candidate in 1896. The platform of his campaign rested in part on replacing the gold standard with free silver, which was one of the most hotly debated topics at the time, as well as uplifting the average farmer. Henry M. Littlefield makes a compelling argument in his essay titled "The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism" that Baum used vivid imagery to bring the Populist ideals to light in his work. Baum associated the main characters of the story with individuals or groups of individuals, and he utilized the famed Silver Slippers and the Yellow Brick Road to express his opinion about the free silver issue. After arriving at Oz and setting down the Yellow Brick Road for the Emerald City, Dorothy meets a Woodman made completely out of tin. Such a film, was The Wizard Of Oz. Beneath the surface of the film, one may examine many characteristics of real world struggles through creative flair. In films, directors will strive to make characters, storylines, backdrops, lighting and other creative factors up to par with modern day events (Lewis 2007). So too, The Wizard Of Oz offers viewers something rather unique and made the world of Hollywood more esoteric than ever before. When observing the storyline of this particular film, one will see the main character Dorothy running into a scarecrow on her journey down the yellow brick road. • 31. Persuasive Essay : The End Of Life This quote gets to me all the time in the way that it gets me thinking. We do so much to get what we want and what we think is the best for us but we don't want to put in all the effort and time it takes to succeed. We want it all to come easily and handed to us but in reality, it doesn't and sometimes some of us don't quite understand, because we want everything the easy way. Doing drugs, failing classes, and getting in trouble is a lot easier than staying clear of drugs, passing a class, and obeying the laws or rules to stay out of trouble; however, it's the wrong path you could take because you don't go on with life with all that. In the end it makes it harder for you to catch up once you're already an adult. I know that sometimes there are days for all of us where we just want to lay in bed and not hear from anyone about anything anymore because we're done with everything, but no one told us that life itself was going to be easy. Making an effort to stay alive is the path we should take even though it's not the easiest one, it can be tough and the people around us can be a little too rough, yet we manage to keep our heads up and keep going with our lives. Although some of us feel like it's easier to give up and leave it all so we won't deal with it, yes, it is easier but the way I see it why give up something that can be beautiful at the end everything takes time and that time is unknown. It could take a year, 5 years, maybe even 30 years, but it comes if we let and if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. An Analysis Of Sonia Nazario, S Enrique's Journey What is home? This question often incites discussion on the difference between a house and a home. It should be noted that there is no right answer to this query. It is a very "to each their own" type of situation. However, there are two stories where home, as an idea, is the central concept. Sonia Nazario's Enrique's Journey chronicles a young boy's, whose family and stability were ripped out from under him, journey as a now troubled man across countries to reclaim what was rightfully his. L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz narrates the trials and tribulations of a young girl who quite literally had her home ripped away from her. Baum goes on to set down one of the most, if not the most, famous journeys in human history as Dorothy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dorothy, among the beauty and grandeur of Oz and the Emerald City, choose¬¬s to go back to a bleak, gray Kansas. Dorothy has a realization that, when love is present, color and beauty can be brought to even the darkest of situations. Enrique similarly shows bravery throughout Nazario's novel. Simply embarking on the journey he made which, unlike for Dorothy, was known to be incredibly dangerous is foolishly brave. However, the desire to have his mother's love again make that risk worth it for him. Enrique also displayed bravery when crossing the Rio Grande. This part of Enrique's Journey is very reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz in many ways. However, the bravery is shown when he trusts El Tirindaro to get him across the Rio Grande. Similarly to Dorothy trusting the Yellow Brick Road, Enrique has no assurance that he will get across safely and past the border police. Another way the stories travelers are similar is in the questioning of humanity and morality. In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy's three companions all want to be given some quality to make them more human or moral. The Scarecrow only wants a brain, to be able to think as most do. The Tin Woodman only wants a heart, to love as most do. The Lion only wants courage, to be brave as some are. These three personal pursuits are one of the foundational storylines in the book. They represent a general pursuit of all to be better people. However, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

More like a disappointment, a disaster, a failure, and a complete waste of my time. The 1939 MGM production of The Wizard of Oz, mainly directed by Victor Fleming, is a horrendous motion picture based on the best seller, classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. But what makes MGM 's production sheer filth and putrefaction? The Wizard of Oz is a horrible movie because of innumerable audio problems, terrible continuity editing skills, and copious cockamamie mistakes. Toward the beginning of the movie, Auntie Em (Clara Blanchard Dickey) and the others go into the storm cellar. Then Auntie Em tries calling for Dorothy and tells Uncle Henry (Charley Grapewin) that she cannot find her; however, Auntie Em 's mouth is moving at a different speed, and is never matching any of the words being produced by a dubbed section. • 39. Influence Of Color In The Wizard Of Oz The Influence of Color Could you ever imagine if The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum didn't have a yellow brick road or an Emerald City? The colors chosen are significant and give the story a deeper meaning. Three colors that stand out in the beginning, middle and the end of the novel are gray, yellow and green. In the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum's use of color is symbolic by associating distinct colors with specific settings and characters. The color gray is referenced in the beginning of the story. Gray is used repetitively to describe the setting in Kansas, their home and it is even used to portray the characters of Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Kansas was not exciting, there were no other homes and not even a tree in sight. "When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side" (Baum 13). Baum describes the farmhouse as "dull and gray as everything else". Aunt Em's eyes, cheeks and lips were even depicted as gray. Uncle Henry's beard and boots were gray and he sat on the door–step looking at the sky that was "grayer than usual" (Baum 14). Gray was also used to show the character's feelings. Aunt Em was worried and Uncle Henry was tired from working. Life was already "gray", gloomy and depressing and then the cyclone hit. The cyclone lifted the home with Dorothy and her dog Toto inside. After the house landed the reader and Dorothy knew that things were going to be quite different. The ...
