Hi there!
I hope you are well today.
Your progress:
Modal verbs are really important when learning English and I’m sure at this stage
you know quite a few. However, it’s always good to go over some important ones
just to make sure you know their meaning and main uses.
Today we are going to look at “could”, “should” and “might” to get a better
understanding of these three important modal verbs.

21. Look at this conversation between Paula (P) and Frank (F):
P: Frank, do you think I should ask the teacher for help regarding my final project?
F: I think you should! You might regret it if you don’t. The deadline’s next week.
P: Could you help me too, Frank? You understand physics a lot better than I do.
F: I might be able to help you! How much are you paying?
P: Frank!
F: I was only joking, Paula! Of course I can help you. Should I come around tonight?
P: Yes, that would be great, thanks.
Take a look at the meaning of these modal verbs:
Should can be used…
- To give or ask for advice (Frank, do you think I should ask the teacher..?)
- To make suggestions (I think you should!)
Might is used to express possibility (You might regret it if you don’t.)
Could can be used…
- To talk about past ability, for example,
I could ride a bike when I was five years old, but I couldn’t read until I was six.
- To make formal requests (Could you help me too, Frank?)
I hope this has helped you understand their uses better.
